I think this is partially true.

Charles Barkley has said on a few occasions in regards to rebounding he didn't worry so much about boxing out, he just went after the ball and wanted it more then the next guy.

Jason Collins made a living boxing out opposing players crashing the glass so that JKidd and others could swoop in for the rebound. On the other hand you don't box out (see Raptors) and aggressive/physical players (see Jason Maxiell) will drink your milkshake all game long.

It is an art to be able to box out AND also time yourself for the rebound. Rodman being one of the best (if not the best) as this.
