The inherent problem with Marion/Beasley at SF/PF is neither is equipped to defend the bigger post players you need to get thru in the playoffs. Garnett's length would eat them alive, as would Sheed's, Duncan's, etc.
- With Marion/Beasley at SF/PF, I'd almost rather see a Jeff Foster or a Ronny Turiaf at center than someone like Diop, so they can be the guy who defends the other team's toughest post player regardless of position (like PJ Brown and Brian Grant have done for us in the past). I know the reponse .. what about Haslem? Well sorry, but a 6'8" center with short arms won't cut it in the NBA. We need more size up front.
- Beasley would then defend the weakest of the other team's frontcourt players ... Like if Jeff Foster defends Duncan, Beasley takes Oberto or Horry or whatever. Or if Foster takes Ilgauska, Beasley takes Ben Wallace.
- Marion takes the toughest perimeter assigment, unless it's a quick PG, in which case the PG we trade Haslem for should be a tough defender. But Marion is in effect the perimeter stopper, the Bruce Bowen type. So he takes Lebron or Pierce or Kobe or Ginobli so wade doesn't have to worry his pretty little head ...
So defensively, I think we can be pretty darn good with a versatile defender at C and a solid one at PG too.
