I don't see Deron Williams in Mayo either, he's more of a Wade, Arenas, Monta Ellis type of guard.

Wow -- so you think Riley expects to get MIN to make that swap to take MAYO, so MIA still gets Beasley, AND give you back your future 1st, AND Blount's contract is eaten by the last team that would do it .. MIN?

As Winona Ryder once said, "Its good to want things," .. and this was before the shoplifting!

Just a little FYI from the MIN side. We don't put as much emphasis on clear positions as some of you seem to do. Perhaps its because Al Jefferson played center most of the time for us, or that Randy Foye is a 1-2. However, if MIN got Beasley:

against big line-ups, for C-PF-F, they'd go: (Defensive center FA)/Al Jefferson/Beasley

against small line-ups, for C-PF-F, they'd go Al Jefferson/Beasley/Gomes

MIN also is very high on Mayo, since Foye-Mayo together clearly have enough play-making skills, and both would be good scorers. I think the same could be said to an even greater extreme with Wade and Mayo, and I disagree with posters who don't think that would be an effective combination because neither one is a "true" PG.

There was a rumor before the draft (no one said anything publicly) that McHale didn't like Beasley. It had nothing to do with fit, but with attitude, and that McHale supposedly worried that Beasley reminded him of Isiah Rider. The Cassell, Sprewell defections over money stung Taylor, and 18 months ago, he publicly said that the Wolves would go back to getting character guys, not ignoring character to get an extra talented guy that could help KG. KG's gone, but I think character still matters to them.

I don't see any reason to think that Beasley is a bad guy .. more "prankster than gangster" I've read on the Wolves boards. However, this was a rumor from an unreliable source, and even if McHale said it, you guys know about posing. McHale notoriously doesn't tell the media anything, and there are few leaks out of the organization, so we're all in the dark here. Personally though, the things I read this week lead me to believe that the gap between Beasley and Mayo is closing, but I can't imagine McHale turning down a fellow big man if he had to choose between the two.

I like a Wade/Mayo backcourt. With a true PG Wade won't be the playmaker and I think he is best in that role. Mayo would be able to play off Wade b/c of his shooting and also at times take the pressure off him and get his own shot. But I still like Beasley much better, maybe we could trade into the 3 to 5 range and get both guys but thats very unlikely.

How would you expect to trade back to 3?

Just say that the 1st 3 picks go as planned in Rose Beasley and Mayo. Miami couuldn't have a more worse team picking 3rd then Minnesota. Obviously Rileys bluffin to get Minny to trade up and give the Heat their pick back.

Jonathan G has an excellent first hand account of Mayo's training regimen at the Grover gym (and a shout out to Wade)

Loved the Clubber Lang reference at athe end. Clearly the trainer reads our board.

Boy, doesn't Jon G have the life nowadays ... scouting and writing about basketball? I remember having a heated argument with him here about whether we should sign Damon Jones (my choice) or Yes Sir Cabbages (his choice) for half the MLE after we traded for Shaq. May history show that DJ served us well and is at least ... ahem ... still in the league! Jon G writes great stuff though.

I rarely go to links, just to save time, but you were right .. that one was worth it.

Another DX article on Mayo is titled "There are more than two players who could go number one." I'm skeptical he'd even go #2, but I have to say that in my book, the superstar players are the ones with that internal drive to improve, so I really liked this article.

"Pat Riley would not say what the Heat would expect in return should it part with the No. 2 pick. But it likely would require the combination of the Heat swapping selections with a team that chooses later in the lottery -- but likely within the top 10 -- and adding a proven veteran at point guard or center.

It might also take a trading partner willing to take on the two seasons and $15.2 million remaining on center Mark Blount's contract or the three seasons and $13.2 million left on guard Marcus Banks' deal. -- The Miami Herald "

There is no way Miami bypasses Rose and/or Beasley to take Mayo with the #2 pick.

When you have the chance to take one of the two stars in a "2-star" draft, you don't pass. Passing on Beasley would be like passing on Durant. Passing on Rose would be like passing on Iverson. (Just for comparison's sake.)

If -- and it is a big if -- Riley's guy is Mayo, he will trade down to get him. The trade value for a draft pick, considered a lock to be a star, with a cap-friendly contract is incredibly high. Remember when Orlando traded Webber for Penny and 3 #1s? Obviously this isn't quite on that level, but it shows you what you can do with a high draft pick.

I don't see a star in Mayo. I see a very good player, potentially At best, Mayo ends up being Billups or Monta Ellis. Really, though, I think he'll be something between Cuttino Mobley and Raja Bell.

mayo will be the best player in the draft.
and one of the top 10 best players in the nba in 2 or 3 years

his game is fluid he has effortless talent more than rose or beasley

the mechanics on his jump shot are already great.
he will be a great shooter.

we don't need a inconsistent shooter like rose.

we need to draft the best all around player.

and that is oj mayo...all the way.

O.J. Mayo will not be the best player in this draft. That's ridiculous talk.

nobody expected wade to become one of the best with the 5th pick.

oj mayo is already a better shooter than wade ever was or will be.

just quote me a year from now when oj mayo explodes...

for your miami heat...

i can't wait to see oj mayo wear that number 32
lol...it's a way to let shaq know he is not respected,
and that his number will not be retired.

O.J. Mayo and Dwyane Wade are night and day in terms of athletiscm and explosiveness.

Wade's first step >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mayo's Life.

Michael Redd can shoot better than Wade, and can score with the best of them. That doesn't mean he's even close to being the same caliber of player.

Mayo's true lack of explosivness will deter him from being truly GREAT in my honest opinion. He is perfectionist and is a darn good shooter from range, and commits to defense, and is unselfish. Which is why he'd probably be my top guy had we had fell out of the top 2,

But his upside isn't even close to what Beasley or Rose is. I mean not even close. Let's not kid ourselves.

Mayo tends to be overhyped a bit, since he's been a household name since Junior High. But when he hit USC, he was good and showed alot, but he wasn't THAT good. He was no "B-Easy". And he was no Derrick "Pooh" Rose. That's for damn sure.

I think Mayo can be about as good as Brandon Roy(similiar skillset). Very good player, and a top shooting/off guard in the league. But never close to being a true superstar.

Now based on what can you say that ? I've been hearing about Mayo on realgm ever since he was a 6th grader ! ! The guy has been predicted to be a terrific player ever since then. He was supposed to be the consensus # 1 pick in this years draft but a slow start in his freshman year hurt him. Also I think he made a bad choice of schools to sign up to. The offense they ran in USC was not suited for a player of his caliber and talent. All of you who are draft freaks can vouch to this. A year ago this time all draft sites and im talking about not just only a year ago two years ago OJ Mayo was the consensus top pick. And I do believe he may end up being the best player in the draft. He has a better shot and longer range than Rose and Beasley. He is 6 ft 5 he can play both guard positions and not to mention he is a great one on one defender. I would be pleased if we ended up with any of the three.
