Potential Second Rounders workout, 2nd round discussion

Post#1 » by Lane1974 » Tue Jun 3, 2008 7:24 pm

The Heat began its private pre-draft workouts today at AmericanAirlines Arena with a pair of sessions that featured Florida State senior guard Jason Rich and Israeli League forward Omri Casspi.

The workouts were held with an eye toward the team's No. 52 choice in the June 26 NBA Draft, its lone selection in the draft's second round.

Also at today's sessions were Georgetown guard Jonathan Wallace, Washington State guard Kyle Weaver, Oregon guard Bryce Taylor, Rhode Island forward Will Daniels, Alabama-Birmingham guard Robert Vaden, Massachusetts forward Gary Forbes, Mississippi State forward Charles Rhodes, Arkansas forward Darian Townes, St. Joseph forward Pat Calathes, Nevada forward JaVale McGee and French center Alexis Ajinca, a skilled 7-footer.

Wallace has a high arcing three point shot, probably the highest my eyes have ever seen. But that's all he can do. He was one of the many guards on the team that didn't know how to pass the ball to the Doctor in the low post.
For a long time it gave me nightmares, witnessing an injustice like that. It’s a constant reminder of just how unfair this world can be.I can still hear them taunting him, Silly Rabbit tricks are for kids.I mean why couldn’t they just give him some cereal?

I wouldn't mind us targeting a backup C type like Sasha Kaun or Padgett.

JaVale McGee C from Nevada and Alexis Ajinca C from France are both considered 1st to late 1st round picks. Maybe the Heat are interested in moving up to the early 2nd (packaging a few of next years 2nd round picks)

I actually played against Bryce Taylor in high school. Im not really high on drafting him. He has a very good overall game, but doesnt do anything incredible. I think his dad played bball in the NBA back in the day.

Robert Vanden from UAB is someone I would look very closely at. He is a junior and could end up going back to school but he is a great shooter from beyong the arc. He does cast away at times, but I think he could provide quality depth at the SF/SG positions and help spread the floor with his shooting range.

Kyle Weaver is another player that Im really interested in. Only thing is, he doesnt shoot the ball great. He is a great defender and is able to get to the hole on offense. I can see him playing PG, in a Ron Harper type mold.

Will Daniels and Gary Forbes are players I have NOT seen play. I know Forbes was like the MVP of the Orlando workouts.

Pat Calathes is someone I would take a look at but to me his game is similar to a Michael Beasley except Calathes doesnt have the same type of skill or post game that Beasley has. Also Calathes is probably a SF in the NBA.

Omri Casspi is a very interesting prospect. I dont know if he will be available at #52 but I would defintely consider him.

Charles Rhodes impressed me in the tournament when they played Memphis in the 2nd round. He has an NBA type body and does have some skill. He would probably be an undersized PF in the NBA.

Other names that I think the Heat should consider in the 2nd round with pick #52 is:

Othella Hunter PF Ohio St.- Good energy player off the bench. Only been playing Bball for 6 years so still has the ability to improve.

Sasha Kaun C/PF Kansas- Good energy player, backup C type. Still has the ability to improve as a player.

Trent Plaisted PF/C BYU- compared to Jeff Foster on nbadraft.net

Sonny Weems SG/SF Arkansas- Athletic wing.

DaVon Jefferson PF/SF USC- Frosh who may still go back to school. He will need to fall to be available late in the 2nd round.

Lester Hudson PG/SG Tenn. Martin- Scoring guard that could play PG next to a guy like Wade.

James Gist PF Maryland- Energy and athleticism off the bench4

Brian Roberts PG Dayton- Roberts shot 45% from 3 last year during college. He has been compared to Daniel Gibson during his play at the Orlando draft workouts where he made First Team All-Draft day workouts. HAHA. He is said to have incredible shooting technique.

Omar is a Nice Prospect but doubt if he is there around 52#. I Also would like to see Sasha Kuan come in for a Workout. The guy is a decent role player and has nice size.

this draft is the deepest since 2003, though not as good...we really need to try to get an early 2nd round pick, Minnesota for example wants to get rid of it.

I think from pick 20 in the mid 1st round, on to around 35, theres not that much difference.

DJ White, Richard Hendrix, Bill Walker, Mario Chalmers, Shan Foster in a normal year are 1st rounders....theyre all possible 2nd rounders this year.

Some one I REALLY like who could be there at #52 is James Gist, he is such a beast.

Also, Marcus Dove is a GREAT defender.

Yes really need to move up. 52 isn't going to get sh*t.

We're a team that's probably going to extremely cap conservative this off-season. Probably won't even use the MLE, so we need to fill that point guard or center void with a viable young player with a little upside.

I'd love to sneak in late and snag a Hibbert or Mario Chalmers.
