A high risk/high reward situation with JR Smith.
Considering all the what-ifs in his game and off the court issues, I'd still enjoy him signing with the Spurs. And besides, it's not like San Antonio is more danger-filled than Denver is.

I say he signs an offer with the Cavs...

I agree. It doesn't take much given that I was quite disappointed in how Boston played vs them and Detroit seems to be heading a different direction.

Basically what we've started up. And, I think his defense would be adjusted on this team.

Well one thing for sure... he can light it up and we need someone to it and he fits the bill just like Stephen Jackson did for us back in the day.

His defensive shortcomings would be somewhat covered in SA. He's got the ability to be an excellent scorer and is a great three-point shooter. He's also young.

defense isn't a problem..we ranked 3rd in the NBA defensively this year, despite having arguably the worst defender in the NBA in Finley..also average defenders(IMO) like Parker, Ginobili and Oberto..the system can implement anybody with Pop, around Duncan and Bowen..Smith has enough athleticism to become an average or maybe even above average defender in our system..

With the coaching, combined with the players and chemistry, he'd be fine defensively, in some form.

At first I didn't like the idea of Smith with you guys, but on second thought, he might be a good fit with SA. Like others have noted, his shortcomings on defense could be made up by the crazy defense of your other players. Since you're probably going to lose some players due to free agency this offseason, it may not be a bad idea to look at JR. I agree that he seems to be a bit immature at times, and displays a low basketball IQ, but on a no-nonsense team like the Spurs, he may get better. I say go for it.

Thats the thing, we haven't had a team of premier defenders, other than bowen and duncan our other players aren't stellar defenders.
I'm sure if we can survive with a fossilizing finley on the floor for periods we can make do with a young athletic JR Smith.

If the Spurs stay put and use all of their 3 draft picks in this draft for training camp fodder once again, this season may be the beginning of the end for the team's demi-dynasty. I'd love to see them move up enough to get Brandon Rush.
Or sign a good SF F/A. The bottom line is the Spurs have to replace their ancient long-ball threats, Horry and Finley. The past couple of seasons, Corey Maggette's name has been mentioned around San Antonio. I have always loved Shawn Marion's game, and I think he would be perfect in SA; he has a player option in Miami. James Posey now has two rings, is a solid contributor and is an Unrestricted F/A. While signing any one of them would represent a "youth movement" ONLY to the ancient Spurs, I wouldn't mind seeing one of those bodies in the silver and black next season. Who knows if the Lakers would match an offer for Sasha Vujacic? I'd love to bring him aboard, and he actually would be youthful!
I like all of these proven commodities better than taking a gamble on JR SMith. The Spurs do nothing BUT gamble - on euro players and geezers. They have to change that mentality.
As little as the Spurs get out of their draft picks, I think the only value that picks will ever have for the Spurs is in trades. They should package up this year's picks and the rights to Splitter and future picks to acquire a player or two that they know will help now before Timmy is over the hill.

Re: Spurs must consider pursuing a scorer/shooter like JR.SMITH
I'd take Smith any day before Vujacic, proven commodity? Huh? What? i don't think it's co-incidence that he is performing well on a contract year, the guy couldn't steal decent minutes before this year and the lakers used to start Chucky Atkins for christ sake. He spent the finals whinning that the celtics played to rough.
We simply don't have the money to attract Posey or Marion who i'll fairly certain will with Miami. So we won't be seeing either here next season.
Splitter's rights won't be that high because he has just signed a contract with Tau and will have a buyout, so that will turn teams off.
I personally think Smith is a good option, sure he hasn't got a good track record with coaches, but George Karl barely qualifies, he game strategy seems to be letting AI and Melo running wild and hoping the score more than the other team.

Actually, I think we are in reasonably good shape for money. Timmy, Manu, Tony, Bowen, Oberto, Bonner, Vaughn, Mahinmi and Barry are our only obligations. The Spurs may re-sign Thomas (who I really liked when he played against us, and who disappointed me last season in silver and balck). Timmy took a reduced salary under his last contract to be able to sign some decent teammates. Their payroll has some flexibility.
I don't think Vujacic's performance was due to this being a contract year. I think he finally got some good minutes and developed. I'd be tempted to throw a MLE at him an see what the Lakers do. I think we still might have the money to also pursue Marion or Posey. I think Marion would like to play for a contender, and the Spurs could be one with Shawn added to our mix. He and Posey both have good athletic ability and are great 3-point shooters.

Re: Spurs must consider pursuing a scorer/shooter like JR.SMITH
no way do we throw a full MLE at a beno udrih clone that allegedly plays defense.
Marion isn't at the point of taking a pay cut for a ring. He was on the max last year and won't go from max to MLE.
Posey is a long shot but slightly more realistic.

Re: Spurs must consider pursuing a scorer/shooter like JR.SMITH
spurs only have the MLE to spend, so you can take marion off the list.
id be leery about giving a full MLE offer to sasha. a breakout year during a contract year is never a great sign. thats about the only thing that ran me off james jones earlier in the year. at this point, i wouldnt take jones because i think we need a wing that can score a bit, not one thats a spot up shooter.
id love to make a serious run at JR, but i dont think it would end well. even in tax hell, im pretty sure denver matches, even if they have to sell pieces at the trade deadline for 10 cent on the dollar to save a buck. JR has improved every year hes been in the league, and hes only 22 years old. i just cant see denver letting that go for nothing.

If not JR Smith, we should split the MLE on one of Duhon/Dooling/Pargo and one of the several young/youngish wings out there. Look at Kwame, Dwayne Jones. Not sure about Diop. I love Posey, but think we need to get more out of the MLE (he'll want most of it).
Got to have a nice draft, and I think we will. Get a versatile SG/SF, get a big man with defensive ability in his game, preferably one that also has a decent offensive game. I see no reason why we can't do that. And will have another pick, probably (the late 2nd rounder).
Who knows on trades.
