How's the cost of living up in the Pacific Northwest? With the cloudy climate and beautiful nature, seems like a good place to get pensive and write a soul-touching novel.

That's actually the area I thought of first, but the prices on craiglist seem pretty high. Well, maybe not high compared to socal or nyc, but higher than my shoestring budget.

I wouldn't mind following thoreau's example, going into the forest, finding a lake, maybe pitching a tent. I wonder how long somebody could camp before he's considered homeless.

Sorry about your AC, minifang, that's miserable. Freaking global warming. This is not normal. Natural disasters. Bees mysteriously dying. Food shortages. Drought. Gas prices. I think it's time we invade Canada.

Including my housing association fees, I pay $850 a month for a decent townhouse in North East San Antonio. Some might want/need something a little snazzier, or have difficulty with the hot weather and humid climate, or not like S.A. in general. But in terms of affordability (no state income tax in Texas, remember), I can't imagine there are many better places to live. I think Money magazine just rated it as one of the most recession-proof cities in the country.

miles, you looking to move to a big city, small city or small town? up in the NW the cities like portland and seattle are still pretty expensive but you can live in S.Oregon and smaller cities like Eugene for 1K per month.

Well..the PM systems are being worked on. The only suggestion I can offer is post it here and I can give it to the mod. If you want to ,of course. ( I can delete it - after I copy it)

let me know

Let's refrain from using the term "homo" in a derogatory manner please. you have been here long enough to know the rules by now, another warning will result in a 3 day suspension.

thanks phil,

my problem is that i responded to the OP in the linked thread using the same language that was used in the OP. the OP gets no repremand? i only answered in kind because it seemed acceptable for the OP to use the term 'homo'. there's no way that the OP's use of the word is any more or less derogatory. just seems like i'm being unfairly singled out here.

well miles ,if you like the pac nw, check out the samller places like ashalnd oregon, or more inland in washington....say closer to idaho than the ocean...great deals to be had but you'll have to work for it...

a friend of mine works the feds,a firefighter, and lived in a nice place in temecula,ca, for about $800 a month...20 miles away from any freeway, completely surrounded by functioning wineries, an hour away from the gaslamp in san diego, and 2 hours away from the ole stapler...

I know someone that grew up just outside of Yosemite kind of near the Fresno area. Gotta be cheap up there, and it's adjacent to a national park... also a reasonable driving distance to the Bay. Possibility?

It's very cheap in Fresno ! I've been here for 3 weeks. But tomorrow I'm leaving for LA. :)
