Re: Point guards
Hinrich, FTW
I see that the Clips aren't going to renew Linvingston - I know he's still recouping and all, but it may be worth it to sign him on the cheap

Re: Point guards
Hinrich would take us out of our 2010 plans, but I still would be happy to grab him. I'd be happy trading Marion for him and Nocioni, who I think is a great complement to Wade-Beasley. But that does set our 2010 plans back and leaves us w/o a big.

Re: Point guards
Maybe the Bulls are desperate to get Hinrich's contract off their books and would settle on a crap deal by the trade deadline, such as:
Marcus Banks ($4 mil for 3 years) and Mark Blount ($7 mil for 2 years)
Hinrich has 4 years left on his front-loaded deal: $10 million (2008-09), $9.5 mil (2009-10); $9 mil (2010-11); $8 mil (2011-12)
At that point, Blount's contract will almost be an expiring, and Banks gives them one less year and double the cap space....
Those are the two worst contracts on the Heat, and although you guys would be taking on a huge contract in Hinrich, it would still leave cap space to pursue a max free agent in 2010.

Re: Point guards
Sending Haslem to the Bulls just doesn't seem right to me, even for Hinrich. Haslem is a Heat for life. And by now we should know the importance of good role players. And the fact that the Miami Heat/Pat Riley churns them out better than anyone but almost never keeps them very long-term. Between PJ Brown, James Posey, Eddie House this year and Bruce Bowen every other year before that, I don't want to see another one get away.
Also, I don't quite understand this love affair for Desagna Diop. How much off the MLE are people really willing to spend on a guy who has literally averaged 2 points and 4 rebounds for each of the 7 years he's been in the league? Why not stick with Joel Anthony for that, at the very least?
I have a feeling we might see Kwame Brown in a Heat uniform to play center. It will generate some excitement because some of us will remember how he was the first overall pick not too long ago and that if anyone can revive a career, especially that of a power player, its the Heat.
But back to the point of the thread.
My top 4 guards I'd love to see, in no order
Kirk Hinrich, but not for Haslem. Blount and Banks give them help at positions they need now. As good as Hinrich is, his contract is very bad, especially for our plans.
Mo Williams, he'd be awesoome and a friendlier contract
Duhon, he'd be great, but I wonder how much he'd cost.
Ellis, apparently really likes the idea of playing for the Heat (see today's Herald), but can't shoot 3s, which is important.
Mo Williams, Monta Ellis (not a great 3-pt shooter), Chris Duhon

Re: Point guards
Based on the available PG's, why would the heat constantly hover around teams garbage cans looking for discarded scrap, when they can develop their own scrap (banks, quinn, chalmers)
Rondo(celtics), proved to me that you don’t really need such a high profile PG you need someone that can play team ball. Sure rondo had a couple of bads games, but he had more good games.
I think all this talk about us needing another PG at this stage was based on Pat Riley’s “post up offense”, let’s wait until we see how our new coaches style works before we see if we really need such another PG.
Some of the top point guards today are only in there 2nd or 3rd year.

Re: Point guards
I think Miami can take a wait-and-see approach here. Marbury and Tinsley may be bought out and some ok point guards may become available via trade. Miami doesn't really need to rush into anything at this point, and I don't think they will.

Re: Point guards
I believe the need for a PG will begin to fade once Mario Chalmers gets to prove what he is all about.
Starting Marcus Banks early in the year (Unless we some how trade him) is not the end of the world. Chalmers can be the backup with Quinn or Jason Richards as our 3rd string.
Overall, I think the Heat need to worry about the C position alot more than the PG position.

lets go after Marbury..hes the most realistic, and no matter what the media says..hes still so much better than all these FA options..and his contract is done after this season.
We need to go after Stephon Marbury

We need to go after Stephon Marbury
He will likely be bough out...even if you think hes lazy, dumb, selfish, whatever....hes a better player than all realistic FA options. Most teams will stay away..

The only way this makes any sense for Miami is if Marbury is bought out.
It makes no sense to trade Marion for him. And, even if New York were willing to take Banks and Blount back, we'd still need to include Haslem in the deal, which also doesn't make sense.

Just because he was a 2nd round pick doesn't mean Chalmers can't get the job done. I'm really excited about him as the future starter. His shooting, defense, and attitude will win out for him in the end. Chalmers, Banks, and Quinn will be just fine.
The only center I can see picking up would be Diop. He's a big producer in the rebounds and blocks department if he can keep the fouls in check. I'd be happy with him as a starter instead of Blount, but even Riley has stated that he believes Diop will go back to Dallas. He'd be worth the mid level, and is the only viable upgrade for us right now unless Marion could net someone like Okafor, which is a pipe dream.

We really need to stop bringin up Kwame Brown. The guy is a stone-handed loser. He SUCKED for the Lakers, after they thought they could revive the former number one pick's career.

Re: Point guards
we need a guy who can come in, grab some boards and body up the opposing center, nothing more... Kwame could do that. With Wade, B-EZ, and Marion (or whoever replaces him) coming, he won't be called on to score

How? The guy never plays.
Number of games played since 2004:
2004-05: 42 games
2005-06: 72 games
2006-07: 41 games
2007-08: 38 games
Might as well sign Shaun Livingston to play PG while we're at it. Or perhaps trade for Jamal Tinsley?

Re: Point guards
BTW, if we're discussing PGs for the MLE, I like the idea of a max MLE offer to Louis Williams the first day of free agency. If Philly matches, they won't have he cap room to pursue Josh Smith, or Brand, or others they've been rumored to be after. They'll still probably match anyway, but if they have a real shot at one those franchise PFs, they'd have to let Lou go to have the space.
At just 21, dude's already putting up 17ppg and 4.8 apg per 35 minutes of action. Project that out a couple years from now as he fills out and improves his game, and you see how he'd be a steal locked up at the MLE range.
And before you say "he isn't a PG" he played a ton of it this year when Miller went to the bench, and playing next to Wade he wouldn't have to be the "pure PG" type obviously. In fact, he'd be ideal next to Wade.
As far as how it affects us cap-wise, I think we'd then be wise to deal Haslem for an expiring and a pick or prospect afterward, leaving us with a core of Wade/Beasley/LWilliams and $17 mill to $19 mill in cap space in 12 months, plus whatever pick or prospect we could get for Haslem, plus guys like Dorell, Chalmers, etc. We could even try to add Banks to the Haslem deal and get both them off the books for next summer.
If Philly matches? No bigee, move on to Plan B.
I just think we're still in the "asset collection" phase of rebuilding, and a swing for the fences on Louis Williams would gives us a terrific young asset that the league would envy for years, similar to the Pistons landing an unproven Chauncey Billups for the MLE years back. And things could easily work salary-wise by getting an expiring (plus pick/prospect) in a deal for Haslem to still hvae HUGE 2009 space, which is well within the realm of possibility IMO.
