^How'd you like Fresno?

CC, you've got to at least put down the cliffs version.

TTC, you make S. oregon sound pretty damn nice. I almost moved to Oregon in the 5th or 6th grade. Could've had a lot of land, a creek in the backyard, all that jazz. Instead we stayed in L.A., and saved our souls.

J-Far, I know exactly what you mean. Their relationship wasn't entirely convincing to me.

Speaking of tyrants and depositions, I watched the HBO 3-DVD set of John Adams, and that was a real joy to watch. American history made real, interesting, and compelling. It's rare when villainy is depicted as the product of perspective and circumstance, and yet integrity is maintained as an objective and undiluted truth. Paul Giamatti seems to have been universally slammed by critics as miscast for the role, but I actually thought he did a great job, and historically, his performance makes a lot of sense.

Wow, I can't imagine why anybody would criticize Giamatti. Granted, persnickety, emotional and egotistical characters aren't much of a stretch for him. But that's who Adams was, so what better choice? He was unbelievable, I thought, as was the entire cast. Especially Laura Linney; she really brought home what an amazing woman Abigail Adams was and what a true partnership the Adams marriage was. John wouldn't have achieved near what he did without her to keep his ego in check.

Phil, I hear you about the constant rain. My sister said she's just about reached her limit in that regard. I'm not sure if it's because she has a young toddler and she misses being closer to my parents, but she's just about ready to move, I think. She's going to have to drag her husband out of there, because he loves it.

Too bad to hear about your car. I'm delving deep into generalizing here, but it seems to me that Portland has a rather large population of hipsters and/or environmentalist types who would probably assume that a black Beamer with California plates belonged to some Hollywood jerkoff wanting to exploit their city in some form or fashion. In that sense, I think Corvus is pretty dead-on.

Blix, I dig Austin, always have. As with any great city, there's a little something for everyone. Other than the ridiculous heat and my brain-dead neighbor with her armada of cats and pet squirrel, I dig San Antonio, too. The nightlifes aren't comparable, but if you can't find yourself a decent bar to belly up to in a city of almost 2 million, you aren't looking hard enough.

Oh yeah you are right on and that is what sucked. I am not some snooty -preppy - business man that rolled into town. I actually had just won that car in sales comp for my company and I am more the laid back surf/skate kinda guy. Oh yeah..they also stole my skateboard on a seperate occasion. And I was living in the heart of downtown portland. I ended up moving to the burbs just to protect my belongings. :)

left a real bad taste in my mouth.

Ok, work is slow, so I'll try to do the full version again.

After officially ending my singledom for girlfriend(the one there was briefly a pic of black/asian/mexican) I was to meet the parents and family at large for her graduation BBQ(college not highschool) heheh I'm not that bad.

They chose the 115 degree day to go to the lake. I pulled up in my truck and walked out into the stunning heat to 6 black guys, all of which were about 6'2" 230-260 and built like middle linebackers. I got the evil eye upon arrival. There were 4 women of varying mixed blood, including my girlfriend.

So I meet the father- he's nice enough, but he immediately goes into the fatherly protection speech about his daughter.

The brothers... quiet but nice, same with the cousins.

Then I met Uncle Bubba, he walks up to me and immediately tries to big dog me:
The aggressive long squeezing handshake, the close stare down and he takes off his sunglasses and tells me to take off mine. He says: "I don't like her boyfriends, I don't trust them. You should have taken off your sunglasses to meet the family, but I had to tell you."

I can feel he's a little offput by the fact that he is not taller than me and I'm still looking down at him, totally unimpressed with his attempt to intimidate me. I replied with, "Nice to meet you- now I feel like she's almost as safe around you as she is with me" hahah he didn't like that.

I went on to hang out with her dad who was cool, but kept saying "Now just be yourself with us, we're real folk around here" (like I'm not being myself or have the right to be a little weary being dogged by uncle Bubba) and "That's my daughter, she's my jewel, you have to really take care of here, we won't take less" Fair enough, she's obviously one of the family favorites, and I think alot of her to have given up the thousands of other gorgeous women I like to think I was about to romance for her.

At some point she hugs me from behind and uncle Bubba chimes in, "no affection boy" to which I completely ignore him and he repeats himself maybe 6 times before she responds to him. He takes another shot at me, and I just smile genuinely. I'm thinking, "Bubba might end up getting his ass kicked" So time goes on and he's on the phone with recruiter after recruiter because one of his boys is being scouted by some big colleges for football as a reciever. The kid was cool, he was blinged out like T.O. as a Jr. in highschool, so it was kinda funny, but I hope he makes it.(I want tickets)

Girlfriend is hugging on me again and Bubba says, "I thought I told you, son. Don't you respect your elders?". So I walk over to him and said, "I can appreciate you being protective and I am over my sister, but first of all: You are like 5 years older than me, not really my elder. Second: I'm not a guy you tell what to do or threaten." Now at this time her brothers and cousins give out a Fridayesque "Dammmnnn!" and start maneuvering to break it up, but I turned my back and walked back to her dad, who tries to reassure me that's is all good. It was pretty much, and I ended up playing them songs and the brothers and I ended up working on an acoustic version of "Back in the Day" by Ahmad, who I mistakenly thought was in Pharcyde.

During the BBQ they let some cracker comments fly directed at a ranger, not used to me being around evidently, but I'm just as guilty of that because I kid you not:

they BBQ'd a few hotdogs but mostly had Fried Chicken & Watermelon! I'm pretty much shocked that it was, seriously. But then my friends wedding is on the other side of the lake, where I have to play music in the damn heat. I go over there and in recapping the story tell my buddies, "and seriously they had a fried chicken and watermelon lunch!" My buddy laughs and points at their reception spread.... watermelon and fried chicken... why because it's good. I'm a dumbass.

Anyhow I'm sure you'll get some more Uncle Bubba stories. I'm not done giving it back to that guy.

Hm, Fresno. I wonder what it's like there. It sounds boring enough. I kinda like the idea of being close to a national park.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

So far these past few days, at the top of my list is Eureka, Ca., which is next to the ocean AND close to the wilderness - and a little south of Redwood Nat. Park. It seems dead enough, cheap enough. The weather is ideal - 60 degrees year round. That's unbelievable. Also, much of the architecture throughout the city is oddly victorian, which makes it a bit more interesting. Has a fairly high crime rate though, crystal meth and sex offenders seem to be a bit of a problem.

my family and i have spoken seriously about moving to the eureka area....i have friends and extended family there already...very very intriguing...4 hour drive to S.F.....there is a lot of good about it, redwoods on one side, the briny blue pacific on the other...kinda where haight-ashbury meets deliverance though...

CC, Props for having the balls to go into something like that - and standing up for yourself. I'm sure you earned a lot of respect for withstanding Bubba's sh*t tests. That you didn't knock his ass out but ended up serenading - pure class.

1000 years ago CC would have been one of those wandering Celtic bards, going from town to town telling stories, haha.

Speaking of fried chicken, it's kinda ironic that I was eating Popeyes while I was read the story. Love that fried chicken. One of these days my metabolism is gonna slow down and I'm gonna be a fat little Asian man.

I am zee Uncle Whisperer. 8-)

Seriously being able to play music under duress to turn things around from boredom to tension feels like a super power sometimes. Though I'd rather fly or be able to turn invisible(think girls locker room)

What is up UBorat? What do you think of the new layout?

Actually the price didn't turn out to be that bad. Depending on your subscription the retail will be about (for the 16GB version) 460, 320 or 180 bucks.

hah. my bad. I thought tkb was still waiting on the first generation one. lol.

BTW, I was reading somewhere that the new Iphone will actually be more expensive than the g1 Iphone.

SOmething about the price drop on the actual phone will be made up by the $10 increase a month for teh service, which now doesnt include text messaging (which you'd have to add X amount of dollars extra a month for a service that used to be included).

Is there any truth to this?

kno, he lives in Norway, not Afghanistan.

Jokes aside, I'm not sure, but I believe 3G is the standard in Europe, has been for a while. This country is way behind on technology compared to Europe and Asia. It's about time that we start catching up. I have friends in Europe who bought the iPhone 1.0, but they had to buy it over here, I think. That's not because they're behind over there, it's because we (and the lack of 3G technology in the first iPhone) are behind. Correct me if I'm wrong, tkb.
