No, did I tell you? I ordered it off one of the sellers on amazon, and according to him, it got lost in the mail. I got a refund, but didn't get around to ordering it, especially since I hit a dry spot with my writing. But thanks for reminding me on both points.

Seeing you finish your book has really inspired me. I need to get my priorities in order.

I'm almost there but it's not all done just yet. I'm gearing up for one last big push to get to the final destination. Procrastinating/getting enthused, I don't know which. You know, I used to call artists with completion anxiety lame. Here I am. But then again, I'm not exactly an author.

Priorities remain the same wherever you move, so if you don't like them, change them now. I learned that the hard (but good) way.

The Longships is an incredibly inspiring story if you're in a drought. Full of life, death, wit, strategy and other excitement like sword-fights, funerals, city conquerings and witty norse girls with sharp tongues. Very poetic.

absolutely...first off find the the best gig you can in the best studio you can find, be prepared to be poor for awhile, learn everything, i mean everything you can, soak up everything you can like a sponge, have a great attitude no matter how stupid or (Please Use More Appropriate Word) the producer or the client is, be clean and smell good, learn the tools you'll use, say buy a mac, buy the L.E. version of pro tools, learn it and know it like the back of your hand, record your buddies for free, the practice you'll recieve is more valuble than the $50 bucks or whatever...

it truly is a system where you'll get out exactly what you put in....when i started,, working 110 hour weeks, @ 7 bucks an hour while using a 1099 tax form, is the standard and the norm, dont be afraid of that, and in those conditions is where you'll get your real knowledge and experience, much like being a rookie and playing in the finals...also get a good reliable car, as you'll probably be a runner for awhile, just take it and the small abuse you'll get...

the fringe benefits greatly outweigh the downside...

Well. thanks for the advice man! Anyways I'm from an electrical engineering background so I might not be as near to the creative side as you guys do. I might be looking more at a signal processing oriented job, may be a little more involved in the technical side.

I'm also looking at the Creative Engg. program in USC, which seems pretty interesting. Do you have anyone working with you from similar backgrounds and what kind of work do they normally do?

I also have a pretty decent experience in video editing and sound mixing but I have mostly done amateur jobs for my university so thats how I got interested in this field.

as well as ae should be having some live sound experience, most engineers nowadays, dont know the difference between ohm's laws and indian meditation oooommmmms, that is a tragedy, back in the day you had to be basically an ee to be an ae, it makes a tremendous difference in understanding the equipment...so thats not bad thing at all, there is a documentary on Tom Dowd, anold skool ae/producer, anyway he started his as ee working on the manhattan project, nuclear science, etc...

the point is you already understand electrons, diodes, thermal valves etc, it is a good starting point...

i neither had any ee training nor knew anything about music(notes, reading) but tons of passion, as erik could tell you there are generally two types of engineers, the ones who are classically trained, and technically proficient or those who are more vibe guys...id fall more into the latter, and neither is wrong...

the only downside to being an engineer, for me, is that my love of music got severely tested...

^ Yup. I've always been a vibe guy, too. I know little about the insides of machines, but I know enough about how to use them to do really well. In a way, I'm pretty illiterate with Ohm's law etc, but I still know enough about the front end to win awards and get nominated for ish. Any kind of background is good, as long as it's long, solid and quality stamped.

There will always be a great need for nuts and bolts type sound engineers because people like myself just want to use the gear, but are screwed unless someone has our back when it all hits the fan. An assistant position to someone like that is a great starting point of a career as a mixer. If you on top of that have a talent for making things sound really good, you'll be able to rise with the rest of the cream through the years.

Just think of where we are in history and make sure to take your specific tech studies within the realm of software and computers. Outboard gear will always be around, but not to the extent it has been in the past. File format conversions and compatibility issues will be good topics to be fluent in. Also, learn as many software as you possibly can. I'm pretty much fluent in ProTools, Digital Performer, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo and I know my way around most plugs for all of the above. It's a must to know your gear.

for some reason Mad World and Levon are on a few mixes I've put together... they must go well together. I would also add St Dominic's Preview by Van Morrison in that grouping.

I started my mixing career by doing the sound checks for our live gigs when I was 18. I mixed and produced my first demo when I was 15. The point being, you can't excel within sound mixing (or anything else for that matter) unless you work hard on it. Labor of love isn't hard. If it isn't a true labor of love, adjust your goals while you can.

Magic's statue is very beautiful !

I didn't take photos, but I'll do that when I get there next time again ! :D

Did you visit it at night? Its a beautiful sight.

Also, the next Nokia Theatre is looking badass. Its right across the street (across the statue, so im assuming you noticed it). Did you get to visit it?

I noticed it, of course ! :D I didn't see it at night, but it was around 6 pm.
And why do they show on the big screens opposite Staples Center only the Clippers, Kings and Sparks ?!
I stood there for like 2 hours and I didn't see anything with the Lakers ! Not good !

Thats simply to remind the people of LA of the minor league teams that are lucky enough to play at Staples whenever the Big Boys arent gracing the floor.

Yeah ! That's right !

The arch of fame ! Where will be Kobe when he ends his career ? Higher that West, Magic, Kareem or Goodrich or Chamberlain ?! I don't remember exactly who's higher from the rear right side, Wilt or Goodrich ? I think it's Goodrich !
I've also seen the roof of the Staples from the Wilshire blvrd.

We should meet there, guys !

P.S. Kobe's autographed jersey in the shop at Staples costs 1500 dollars ! Would you pay for it ?

We'll spread it across all the Other Sports forums. Like the athletics/swimming etc in the athletics forum, tennis in the tennis forum, soccer and boxing etc..,

Any other competitions will most likely be handled on one of the forums or some forum where the current traffic is low.

Now that you've reminded me of that, I'll talk to other mods as well. :D

Well, I guess I'm going to face a lot of that too, since I've never played an instrument and don't even understand the nuances of music except that I have a good taste for various genres.

My strength is going to be my technical knowledge and a little research from my side has got me more encouraged regarding opportunities for an audio engineer. I'd like to have a creative job and so far this career seems very interesting. I have worked with signal processors, which are pretty often used in audio engineering so thats another avenue that I'm looking into.

July 4: Put on the entire John Adams series, BBQ all day.

July 5: Governor's Island with some friends. NY Philharmonic, fireworks show, waterfalls, picnic.

Anybody else doing anything?
