Nate Burleson Done for the Year

Post#1 » by Ex-hippie » Mon Aug 18, 2008 8:57 pm

EDIT: My attempt to split this topic was a total failure...scroll down to the bottom of the page for Burleson discussion...

I was a big Coutu proponent, but on further reflection, it's definitely not a big deal. Mare might not be a long-term solution, but there's a seventh-round pick next year and another seventh-round pick the year after that.

I don't see some team rushing to grab Coutu, so perhaps he'd still be an option if Mare does poorly.

As for the Forsett/Duckett talk...

DeHaven really likes Justin Forsett as a returner. He runs hard, doesn't go down on the first hit, is sometimes difficult for opponents to see and is very tough. He said Nate Burleson is definitely out as a returner if he is going to be No. 1 receiver.

http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/seahawks/2008/08/20/p30223#more30223

I just listened to Mitch Levy's interview of Mike Holmgren this morning, and a couple things jumped out:

1) While discussing Justin Forsett, he said that his decision at the end is either with the Seahawks or elsewhere. He essentially acknowledged that Forsett will not get through waivers if they try to place him on the practice squad. He also said he realizes that there could be a public backlash if the guy is cut.

2) Regarding T.J. Duckett, Hugh Millen was very critical, saying that he is a one-trick pony whose one trick is not that effective. Holmgren did not really defend Duckett, instead acknowledging that "the pile is pretty big" in front of him, meaning the other running backs. He said the Duckett decision also will come down to the end.

http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/seahawks/2008/08/20/forsett_vs_duckett_conundrum#comments

Alright, so the team realizes Forsett's not making the practice squad, the coaching staff believes he can contribute on special team (and they haven't really been trying anyone else as a return man), and Holmgren isn't exactly gushing about Duckett.

I wonder if this decision's already made?

Thanks for the find.

Jeez, I hope you're right. There will be backlash and we certainly would get picked up elsewhere. Duckett really has be the guy who goes in this case. I was excited about TJ remembering him from the Falcons when he was running over people, but I'd say he's followed the trend of short rb careers.

Re: Wide receivers-
I'm pulling for Kent, but after our ball dropping (DJack Stevens Robinson) years, he might have let his opp slide through as well. Sounds like Logan Payne is starting to separate himself despite the cracked rib, and Obomanu has lost ground.

On a side note: Do you guys think that the injuries now are good, aka get them out of the way (alot of them are surgery related) or bad as they never allowed a full preseason gelling and they may continue to plague us throughout the season?

Injuries are a big part of the game, but I can see our early struggles with them as both good and bad. Losing Engram is obviously really bad considering his role and Branch's lengthy rehab.

I don't see how an injury is ever a good thing. "Getting them out of the way" implies that an injury now precludes an injury later, but I don't believe the laws of probability work that way. However, if there is any upside, the injuries to Branch and Engram are possibly allowing the younger receivers to get more reps in camp and more looks in the remaining preseason games.

well I'm actually feeling like our injuries aren't that bad considering Merriman and Osi. And we get to see a televised game here in Cali... sweet.

I don't subscribe to the "we're due" to have them some time theory with regard to injuries. Also, the Seahawks put Tyler Schmitt on IR, meaning we're due for another season of long-snapping adventures.

Roster was set with these moves:

Placed on Injured Reserve
WR Ben Obomanu
DT Chris Cooper

Terminated Veteran Contacts:
WR Bryan Gilmore
DT Larry Tripplett

Waived:
DB Jamar Adams
QB Dalton Bell
DT Kevin Brown
WR Michael Bumpus
C Ben Claxton
DB Marquis Floyd
P Reggie Hodges
DB Kelin Johnson
C Nick Jones
FB David Kirtman
G Pat Murray
TE Joe Newton
LB Dallas Sartz
WR Trent Shelton
DE Nu’u Tafisi
T Kyle Williams

Then they signed these 7 to the 8 man practice squad:

Seahawks Practice Squad
S - Jamar Adams
DT - Kevin Brown
WR - Michael Bumpus
CB - Marquis Floyd
T - Samuel Gutekunst
G - Pat Murray
TE - Joe Newton
T - Kyle Williams

Good Lord! After watching the Husky game against Oregon last night, the Mariners horrible season, Schultz dropping his PR suit, thus cementing the Sonics move for good, unless your an excited soccer fan, all we have left in Seattle to hope for is the Seahawks.

I'm going to b*tch-slap anyone who gets crazy critical of the Hawks around here, at least until they implode. Going for a fifth division title in a row is a far cry above ANYTHING any Seattle teams are giving us in the way of fan satisfaction.

Given the sad state of the receiving corps, I wonder what the odds are of Ruskell taking a shot on a guy like Chad Jackson (New England cut him today).

It would be tough to teach the playbook this late in the game and even our young guys have either had all preseason or all of last year to study the routes.

2 Kickers? What? This better be temporary, I cannot for the life of me explain keeping two kickers.

We're getting close now... can't wait for the Bills.

I assume they'll let one of the kickers go once they need to clear roster spots for Bernard and Babineaux. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see who gets the actual FG attempts in the Buffalo game.

Glad to see Joe Newton is hanging on for a second year on the practice squad. People always overlooked him when he was at OSU...at least he's making an honest fight for a spot.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

Whoa so new state of the Hawks:

total ouch-ness

I think the real problem is our O-line looking like crap and our receivers also looking like crap, but the symptom included awful run game.

So... the line I figure will get better with a little time and hopefully healing, but the receiver issue? yikes... I'd take a look at the vets who haven't signed at this point.

Jesus Christ. How can this team win without any recievers? Our top for have gone with injuries for crying out loud. There's nothing to stop teams from stacking the box and letting pile on to Maurice Mo--oh, ****, nevermind...he's hurt too apparently.

We're relying on practice squad players, a vet with health issues, and...oh, another vet with health issues who had massive reconstructive surgery on his knee. Great.

I don't think I'm overreacting by thinking the season's in jeopardy right now. Kent's the only WR who can paly right now who can achieve any sort of separation, and he's woefully inconsistent. If Hass doesn't have anyone to throw to...what are we supposed to do?

All the options out there really, really suck. I put up a poll, not because I agree with all the options but because I thought it was a good mix of available talent. I think you give Carolina a call about Steve Smith to see if his price is reasonable. If he's not, God...I don't like any of the FA options. I would like to add Bumpus at Payne's expense regardless.

Honestly, Koren knows our system and Matt, he is big and athletic and not that old, and he has semi cleaned up his act. Why not give him a chance. We know Holmgren likes him.
