Someone posted this on NSBB:
According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are not a serious player for Jake Peavy. Miklasz's Cardinals sources downplayed the idea and noted that they've only had one conversation with the Padres.

As Miklasz says, it could be the money, the prospects, or both. Viva El Birdos believes it would limit roster construction. If the Cardinals take a pass and the Astros don't have the goods, it might be down to the Braves, Dodgers, and Cubs.

It seems like it would be impossible for Peavy to come here. But the Mets did steal Johan from Minnesota for practically nothing.

Again I am probably dreaming, but without trading Big Z and resigning Dempster, it would look like this....

Peavy
Zambrano
Harden
Dempster
Lilly

One, the Peavy trade is where the Juan Pierre trade KILLS us. Imagine us with another three arms to trade. We could be looking at those three arms being huge pieces. Here is what I assume it takes:
IF Ronny Cedeno
IF Mike Fontenot
IF Casey McGhee
OF Felix Pie
P Jeff Samardzija
P Kevin Hart
P Sean Marshall

That still might be lacking, but that would be fine by me

Whispers: Peavy could land with Cubs
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/ba ... 2815.story
According to Baseball America, the Cubs slipped from ninth to 15th in total budget for the amateur draft, spending about $600,000 less in 2008 than '07. The White Sox increased their spending but can't exactly brag about ranking 23rd. The top five spenders were the Royals, Red Sox, Rays, Pirates and Giants. … The Cubs are on the list of teams for which Jake Peavy will waive his no-trade clause. This doesn't look like a fit, but don't be surprised if Jim Hendry tries to put together a package that would include a swap of first basemen, Derrek Lee and Adrian Gonzalez, who is supposedly untouchable.

If you add Adrian Gonzalez to the trade list then it becomes even harder to make a deal. The Cubs do not have enough talent to get both Peavy and Gonzalez.

With the reports that money might be tight I wouldnt be surprised if we only add Ibanez and a lefty for the pen in addition to re-signing wood and dump.

He also said he plans to move Kosuke Fukudome, the Cubs' $48 million Japanese import whose second-half slump exasperated the manager, to center field as part of a platoon with Reed Johnson.

So can we trade Pie before he turns 30...the guy is never going to get a shot here.

We cant afford Adam Dunn and you know it. Hello Raul Ibanez or some other journeymen OF.

I agree. If Pie is not going to get a shot here, then trade him while his value is still high. Perhaps try to get a deal for Peavy but I still think it's highly unlikely a deal will ever be made.

thats a good one. He seems to be on the decline though. I honestly think we only make a move for a RF and hope that boost in power (Dunn etc.) or consistency (anyone but fukudome) helps.

I want us to focus on adding 2 reliable pen arms (one a lefty).

I dont like how we are trying to Yankee it up. Red Sox and Rays have shown that you need an infusion of both FA and farm to win.

If we want Peavy we need to offer up Pie, Shark, Ceda and Marshall for starters.

The joy of winning with your guys is almost non-existent these days.

I think its the single essence that makes Jeter, Jeter.

Cubs frontrunners for Peavy according to Rosenthals sources:
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8761 ... ,-Dempster

Also want to resign Demp too. Would be unbelievable.
