They will compete for the 8th seed with the Clippers. Finals is a little bit out of reach for them.

Mavericks are the most unnoticed contender going into this season. They have a shot at it, they really do.

Recent evidence could suggest the bad season they had lst year was due to the coach losing the team or how do you figure the fact that they are the only team to have 3 in the top 30 of this recent talent evaluation list that can be found here http://www.realgm.com/src_fromtherafter ... preseason/

The mavs stole Brandon Bass last season and appear to have got a steal this season in Gerald Green who has been a dominating scoring machine since coming over. With the hole at SG soon to be gone and the new non ISO motion offense that Carlisle has installed the Mavs will get lots of easy baskets in transition to take advantage of Kidds skills so the addition of youth will pay off as we surround Kidd with the fast athletic finishers he needs to compliment the inside out game Dirk offers. Wright the starting SG came over in the Kidd trade and we reacquired Diop in the off season so what we really gave up for Kidd wasn't that much especially if Wright has a break out season as well.

The team is now 2 deep at every position and then some.
Dampier Diop team up to split time at center and provide top defensive efforts abway above average here

Dirk and Bass are the best PF tandem in the league and this is indisputable.

Howard with Stack or any of a plethora of young talents slated to step up this season are about as good as you can wish for at SF. Williams from Indiana has the opportunity to develop and Singleton could as well if not they still have Devean George and Stackhouse.

SG the new strong point for the mavs and what has everyone thinking positively in Dallas is the stepped up play of both Antoine Wright 6'7" and Gerald Green 6'8" both tall big and athletic for the 2 spot. these guys will finish what Kidd throws them. Both of these players are already candidates for MIP.

Kidd like having a coach on the court at all times. When he isn't then Jason Terry the PG from our last finals appearance will solidify the back up and give us the best backup in the league allowing us to have an advantage every game whenever the startging PG goes out.

Sorry to burst your bubble but with a new coach we have a new lease on life and have made the proper additions to seal up all the holes. If I look to find a weakness on this team it's at our center position which is just not that important a position as it once was. They play good on D but both suck on O. How many teams can say they have a scoring machine at center.

LA is the only team I think that can compete with this seasons Mavs.

San is old and hurt,

Hou just hurt which always seems to be the case,

NO face it Paul is small and if the Mavs had Diop and a coach that could coach using the Wright players we probably win that series because Diop would shut down Chandlers advantage. The hole at Sg allowed everyone to double down on Dirk and Howard and Avery's ISO offense took away from Kidds run and gun abilities. This next time things will be very different.

Utah just seems that they are overachieving for the talent they have which is coaching. Sloan is the best in the biz for getting more with less.

Portland could be the team that sneaks up on everyone with Oden coming back. They got more lottery help due to his being out and now his team is loaded.

Pho old and always hurt new coach trying to teach D is new tricks to old dogs.

Bottom line Dallas improved at the areas they were weak in and that was all they needed retooled and ready to return to dominance. The first part of the season they will have a few hickups as they develop youth and learn a new offense. The main person learning it ran a similar offense in Jersey so it won't be a total relearn job. The thing is will it translate in the post season or will it be exposed. Easy baskets mean you have more energy to expend on D and this offense will get them a lot of easy baskets.

So now Rick Carlise is God?

He turned a broken Mavs team that was bounced in the first round 2 times in a row into a team that only the Lakers can compete with?

they have no chance? wont even make playoffs? based on? oh ya cause they sucked for part of the season after trading for jkidd, i guess they will suck next year now too, because chemistry builds overnight

ZERO % chance they miss the playoffs, no team is a lock for the ship, saying they have no shot is just plain stupid

jkidd is still a top pg in the league, he can adjust to ANY team and im a knick fan who has hated him but its a fact.. last i checked they still have dirk, josh howard, j terry, good defensive bigs, and just added a players coach who helped build the pistons championship team and made the playoffs 5 out of the last 6 years he coached (including some very AVERAGE pacer teams)..

Mavs will be a serious contender this year

I still think Dallas and Denver should do a Kidd and Iverson swap. It's not like either team is winning this year as it is, and their contract situation is identical. Both players would fit with the other system much more than the one they're in... Kidd would work running with the Nuggets and using all their up tempo offensive players, and Iverson would fit in Dallas' iso system and would take the major scoring pressure off Dirk and could be the man in crunch time and the playoffs.

Neither are winning this year with what they have, so why not give it a try, lol.

Dallas can be a dangerous team, I don't fear them but I think they can do some damage in the playoffs.

"Mavs" and "believe" should only be mentioned in the same sentence when discussing this :

The window will be officially closed after this season. They still have a chance/shot this year, yes.

Can't blame the two of them for saying what they said. What else were they supposed to say as the leaders of their team? The moment they stop believing is the moment the rest of the team stops believing.

But hey, people called Kidd crazy and dillusional several years ago when he said the Nets were going to make the playoffs after his trade from Phoenix.

Then again, he was still in his prime then.

Most championship teams have young guys that step up. Sam Cassell on the Rockets. Tony Parker on the Spurs. Kendric Perkins and Rajon Rondo on the Celtics. Rip Hamilton and Prince @ Detroit. You cant just buy a team of stars in the NBA.

Between Bass, Diop, Green, Wright, Singleton and Williams someone might step up and contribute more than expected filling holes well known to exist. Since there is so much young talent on the bench now, odds are one of them will perform well.

Bass is a solid PF, Wright will likely start but Green may steal that job thats how tight that position is being fought. Diop will help Dampier defend the middle more than adequately and the pair of Singleton and Williams should produce enough to allow Howard to get some rest and may develop into more useful players that could serve as valued trade chips laster on.

The old vets that screwed up last season are gone or having their roles lessened in favor of youth that will allow a core of Dirk Howard and Kidd to extend the window of opportunity further. The fact that Stack is likely to get a TDL ship out means the Mavs are looking to find one last contributor that could greatly assist them with their mission to win it all.

As the team is built right now they are counting on youth but the infusion of youth has them playing better and should produce the needed results if we are to judge them by their contributions.

Are you kidding me? Their window shut when they couldn't close the deal on D-Whistle and the elderly Heat. They might not make the playoffs at all, and even if that does happen, they won't go far.

Cuban is responsible for both building up this team, then ruining it with his ego and constant meddling.
