Frank Gore vs. Stephen Jackson

Post#1 » by sixer4ever » Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:34 pm

First off, I'm a huge 49ers fab so I may be a little bias here. I'd take gore over jackson because gore is the better runner hands down. Jackson had better overall stats than Gore last season but I think thats partially due to the fact that defenses were basically loading up the box to stop gore at all costs while jackson had Bulger, Holt, and Bruce to take some of the load off his shoulders. The thing is, even when teams stuck 8 men in the box, Gore ran right over them and i dont think jackson could do that. What do you guys think?

i will take STEVEN jackson. the guy won the fantasy football league for me. i love him!! :heartstevenjackson: both are tough runners but i will give jackson the edge because of his receiving skills.

Gore is a better pure runner than Jackson, but Jackson is a better weapon in the passing game (though Gore is an underrated pass catcher IMO).

Not sure who I'd take if I had the choice, but let's just say I wouldn't trade one for the other if I already had one because they are so close.

Despite the fact that Steven Jackson was more prolific as a receiver, I'm going with Frank Gore right now. To this point in his career he's been a more efficient runner with a higher YPC average. Last year he gained over 100 more yards on the ground than Jackson, despite Jackson rushing over 30 more times. Jackson put up some fantastic receiving stats (over 800 yards), but Gore's are nothing to ignore either. He came up just shy of 500 yards receiving on the year. Of course you must take into account that Gore fumbled more, also.

I think it's pretty close. They're both great young runners. I lean towards Gore, but I see why people would prefer Jackson.

How do you figure "its not even close"?

Frank Gore has the edge in rushing yards (by a healthy margin - 1,789 to 1,528) and YPC (also by a fair amount - 5.4 to 4.4). Steven Jackson was better in rushing TDs and recieving.

All in all, they're pretty comprable. Gore is a better pure runner but Jackson is a better pass catcher.

Good post, but I want to see more from both guys before I proclaim either as better at anything. If we had a 3-4 year sample, I would make my choice.

If I had the choice between both? Im taking Jackson hands down. I dont thnk its that close. Gore had more rushing yards, and yards per carry. Jackson was the better all around player, period.

If you wanna break down everything...

Gore: carries 312, yards 1695 TD's 8/ Rec: 61 Yards 485 1 td/ fumbles 6 with 5 lost. total yards per touch 5.8/total yards 2180

Jackson: carries 346, yards 1528 TD's 13/ Rec: 90 yards: 806 3 td's/ fumbles 4 with 2 lost. total yards per touch is 5.3/total yards 2334

I realize most of you are niners homers. But there is no debate imo. Jackson is the better player, and had the better season. I also dont think he utilized his full potential last year.

He had more TD's/Yard's/Touche's to go along with less turnovers. Also had more first downs 105 to 88. Gore averaged .5 yards more a touch.

Better comparison thread than most, but I think Jackson is the obviouse choice, from someone who dosent care about either team or player.

EDIT: after more research http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/rb.php

Jackson was ranked 4th in the league in rushing DPAR only behind LT/Ljohnson/Tiki

Gore was 6th on that last....

DPAR recieving is even worse.

Jackson is number 1

Gore is 23rd

So statistically Jackson is the better runner and reciever.

I hope that ends this 49er fan love fest.

EDIT:

Before people talk about the unreal blocking that Jackson recieved...

http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol.php

The rams are ranked 6th in rushing blocking, the 49ers 7th. Slightly better are the rams.
