End of story? You've got to be kidding.
i am.
Essentially, the trade was good for us tho. We get a ton of cap room in the 2010 offseason, and past the big 3 of Lebron Wade and Bosh, there is a plethora of other good free agents available. If this team can improve to a fringe 8th seed with this core over the next 2 seasons with the improvement of Al, and the development of Love and hopefully FOye as a PG, we could lure a free agent to fit a need (whatever it may be at that time) to push us into the playoffs. Develop that team a year or two and we could be a team in contention again. The trade wasnt meant to benifit the team immediately. It was done around Mchale (finally) having a vision for the team. We are going to develop a young core, around a superstar in the making in Al, a good young offensive post man, with a good jumper in Love, our PG in progress foye and a guy with amazing offensive potential in Shaddy, and a defensive stopper in brewer.
The team looks like a poor (very very very poor) mans Spurs.....
Jefferson - Duncan (not a close comparison, but both strong offensive players with sound footwork and decent range)
Foye - Parker (parker is a slasher, with good pg skills. Those skills developed over his career so far, he didnt really enter the league with the ability to run an offence as well as he does today)
Shad - Ginobili (Again, a tough comparison souly on stats, but looking at the way Gino developed, shad could become just as potent an offensive weapon)
Brewer - Bowen (both play small forward and maybe a bit of sg. both known for defence. brewer needs to develop a jump shot from the corner to make the comparison really just)
Love - mat bonner X10 (both just role players atm, a big man with good range but love adds a lot more than bonner)
Mchale has (finally) taken a page from a winners book. He seems to be trying the model the team after the spurs, not a bad idea. Furthermore, if the team can actually mesh in this model (with the players obviously improving) we will have a strong core. Add a top free agent to this strong nucleus in the offseason of 2010, and maybe keep mike miller as a sharpshooter and you've got a very formidable lineup that could potentially contend.
THIS is why i would not reverse the trade. He has done a good job of ridding the team of cancerous contracts (Marko Jaric) and attitudes (Antoine Walker) that would have not helped this development. Essentially, we are rebiulding a team around the model of the most succesful team in the millenium, and i for one am willing to suffer a season of the team building together for this plan to come to fruition in the future.
I never thought i would think, let alone type these words, but Kudos to Mchale, he has finally thought about what he needs to do to build a good team.
