IMO it has to be Pierce right now.

He has already had some great clutch performances...

Pierce
Lebron
B-Roy
Kobe
V Carter

No particular order. V.Carter will probably drop out by the end but that Toronto game was enormous.

Wow look at Ginobili's numbers in crunch time. 43.3 pts on 57% from the field and 44% from 3. Throw in 10.5 assists and 3.0 steals and you have yourself a clutch player.

Duncan belongs in the top 5. If it is counting defense also, that is.

it depends what you mean..

as a closer? I'm actually gonna say Paul Pierce..I hate him as much as anybody, but he's done it in the biggest situations possible..Wade is another guy I could say, but I'll stick with Pierce..

for big games? I'll take Duncan..can't go wrong with him..

JordanL wrote:They, as far as I know, did not go through the same calculations for any other player as the story was a piece on Roy.

The process, as far as they described it was any play in which Roy made the decisive play, be it a pass, steal, block, shot, rebound, etc. which pushed the game to overtime or gave the team the win, (and they did not double up on overtime wins).

They did not report it as a percentage though, they reported it as a number of wins, which I then calculated a percentage from by tabulating the total wins while Roy has been a Blazer. (Although to be fair, i actually did not subtract the games which he did not play, so the percentage should probably be higher.)

EDIT:

They also did not include games in which Roy was clutch to push it to overtime but that the Blazers eventually lost.

Thanks for the info. It would be interesting if 82games.com would do something similar for all the players in the league, but a bit more in-depth, you know?

Top 3?

Kobe, LeBron and Wade (in no order) are 3 of the most clutchest player in the league today. They've proven it year in and year out. -- Roy is good, but not top 3 worthy (yet)

fwiw, being clutch doesn't always mean a big shot, it can be a crucial pass, steal, rebound, etc.

You mean like this?

Or like This?

These are just from his rookie season!!

Brandon Roy is a killer. That being said, Im not sure you can say that hes better than any of those 3 in the clutch, especially because he hasn't ever had a chance to do it in the playoffs, whereas those 3 have. But I will say this, If it came down to one possession at the end of a game, Im not sure Id rather have one of them with the ball in their hands over BRoy (except maybe Kobe), but perhaps thats just my homerism showing

For me it has to be guys who pulled and willed their teams in the finals.

What a contrived parameter to set. As if Lebron, Joe Johnson, Nash, and others aren't clutch just because their performances didn't come against (sometimes inferior) opponents in the finals.

How can Lebron be considered a top clutch player when he misses so many crucial free throws?

A top clutch player makes shots including free throws.

Just watch him play sometimes...that would be a great start.

Btw, aren't you Blazers fan? I'd think Blazers fans remember last year's game against the Cavs...

same ignorance again...

oh well, excluding Kobe, LeBron and Wade(cuz they're uber-talented) it's gotta be Paul Pierce and Brandon Roy.

That game ruined my night. Apparently some stupid kid was yelling stuff at LeBron and he just started going crazy. After a couple of huge shots he actually pointed at him, as if to say, "you see what you get when you taunt the king???"

I remember seeing this last year, Ginobili is pretty insane in the clutch. Nash's 3 point % really stands out too.

But if I had to pick one player it would be LeBron. Unstoppable.

So MJ isn't cluch then?

I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. - Michael Jordan

I guess most of you don't consider making free throws in the clutch to be that important. I didn't say Lebron isn't clutch or isn't a great player. I pointed out he's ability to make free throws for his team when they need him to is below the other guys mentioned so far.

If the game is on the line and need a guy to make free throws on top of hitting big shots, I would take Billups or Kobe. So forgive me if I think a 73% career FT shooter is not my first choice. If you want to include defense, then I think Lebron is definitely one of the top if not the top player. Most of the posters didn't include defense as part of the clutch criteria so I didn't either.

As far as MJ...I have no idea where you are going with that. Of course MJ is most clutch of all time.

The point of quoting MJ is to prove the point that even the greatest of them all fail at times, hence MJ saying he's been trusted to win the game 26 times and failed all 26 times.

There comes a time that LeBron or Wade or Kobe will miss a crucial shot or FT, but does that take everything entirely away from them when they are placed in the same position again?

I've seen Wade and LeBron miss crucial FTs in games, but they come back and make up for it in other ways, stealing an inbounds pass, forcing a turnover here or there.

Yes, they may not be the best of FT shooters, but they are 2 of the clutchest (overall) players this league has, in addition to Kobe.

Tim Duncan and Steve Nash. Duncan especially. He turns it on whenever he needs to on both ends of the floor.

These players pop into my head when I think clutch - and not just hitting shots, but the overall play in crunch time when the team needs it most:

Pierce
Bryant
Wade
James
Duncan
Nash
Roy
