Congrats to Jerry Sloan

Post#1 » by ropjhk » Tue Dec 9, 2008 3:30 pm

Today's his 20th anniversary of coaching the Utah Jazz. He has the longest tenure right now of any coach in pro sports. In a time when coaches get canned more often than tuna, we should pay special recognition to what Jerry Sloan has done.

There have been 223 coaching changes since Sloan took over in Utah, including I believe 4 this season already.

To celebrate his 20th anniversary I hear that the Jazz will beat up on the Wolves who are being coached by the newest and latest coach to arrive to NBA in Kevin McHale.

God 20 failed seasons....I guess the only reason he's being celebrated for is how long he's survived, like a cockroach. Sure can't be because he won anything, because he didn't.

Exactly. This is the same sort of attitude I subscribe to when old people have birthdays. Yes, you're old, but what have you won? World War II? Pssh.

I can't help it...

OK, fine, I'll go there.

Naturally, anyone with Arenas in the username knows a whole lot about playoff success.

There. I went there.

*exhale*

Anyway, congrats to Sloan! Two decades and going strong is amazing.

Sir Alex Ferguson... wow, he's been knighted? Can't really compete with that.

JackFinn, that's an adorable avatar.

It is very sad to see so many people undervalue what he has brought to basketball, and the beacon of consistency he has been. Very sad to see the reaction in RealGM. I don't even super like him as a coach, as a Jazz fan, and there are many Jazz fans who are Anti-Sloan, but even we give due to the man.

The longest tenured coach in basketball history, and equally the least condecorated. Very dissapointing.

Gotta give Sloan his due. He is a tremendous coach. Just because he hasn't won an NBA championship yet doesn't take away from what he's done. Congrats to him and I hope he wins won.

Only one person has been negative so far, and that person has been getting flamed.

The truly sad thing is the way many long-time Jazz fans treat him just because he hasn't won the whole thing. Do people realize just how close he got and how unfortunate he was not to have won? It is very difficult to win in Salt Lake City, but Sloan has kept the franchise winning and playing beautiful basketball.

I think he will win the big one some day.

What would have happened if Michael Jordan had extended his retirement for three more years, and the Jazz won the championship in 97 and 98? How would your opinion about Sloan change?

My point exactly Rooster. You would think that this thread would be 8 pages long by now. LeBron talks about possibly going to New York, thread booms to 20 pages. This one is barely in its 2nd page. The negative opinions are there. I really feel bad for Sloan, because he deserves a lot more than he gets.

I am glad at least Adande gives Sloan some due.
