Bill Walsh Dies After Battle With Leukemia

Bill Walsh, former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, died Monday following a battle with leukemia, a source told KCRA 3.

Walsh died at about 11 a.m. at home, officials said.

Very, very sad day indeed. My fondest NFL-related memories growing up were of the Kenny Stabler era Raiders and the Niners under Walsh. Walsh was a genuinely good guy that easily proved his mastery of the game. The NFL world has lost a great one today.

I wrote up a whole post disagreeing with the "genuinely good guy" part. Then I decided it's in poor taste to go into details, and erased it. Heck, it might be in poor taste just to say what I'm saying now. Sorry to anyone who's offended.

But he was a brilliant coach, no doubt about it.

Best mind in the history of sports. Only guy who comes close is Branch Rickey.

Wow.

And I have heard from SEVERAL people that he was an extreme class act...dunno what that earlier comment was alluding to. Spoke to Chris Schultz about him once, and while I was going on about what a genius he was, Schultz (Canadian player/analyst) couldn't stop talking about him being the classiest guy he'd ever met in sports, just a pure 'gentleman' in his words.
