Why the Nuggets do it:
Our backup small forward position is pretty weak and this trade gives us some more depth off the bench. I really liked Johnson and Quinn as my backup point guards, and Jones as my backup shooting guard, but I signed Antoine Wright, so one of he and Jones had to go.

Cap Space (using $5.67 million TE)

Bobcats Trade/Nuggets receive:
Rafer Alston $5,250,000

This is exactly what trade exceptions are for, finding guys who are buried on another team's bench and making a trade that gives you depth and a boost in talent. It puts us WAY over the tax this year (which hurts), but next year when we have to resign him, O'neil, Smith and Mason we won't be nearly as far over (especially after Gadz expires). Our bench of Alston-Stuckey-Garcia-Smith-Perkins should be good enough to give us a shot at the title this year.

The Indiana Pacers and Charlotte Bobcats have agreed upon a trade.

Indiana sends Jordan Farmar ($1,947,240), Andre Miller ($5,848,000), and Andre Iguodala ($12,200,000) for Brandon Rush (1,934,160), Luke Ridnour (6,500,000) and Rajon Rondo ($9,000,000).

Indiana/Charlotte Outgoing: $19,995,240
Indiana/Charlotte Incoming: $17,434,160 X 1.25 = 21,792,700 > $19,995,240. Works!

Indiana accepts, we absolutely hate to lose Iguodala who was with our franchise early in this competition, and Andre Miller, a true veteran and one of the most underrated PG's in the league. But with the Pacers direction being in a more re-tooling for the future, we felt we couldn't pass up on a deal where we finally get our PG of the future, and arguably in the Top 5 of young PG's in the game right now. Then re-acquiring Rush was crucial as he showed what he's capable of when starting (roughly 17 points per game in 19 starts at G). Also saves some money going forward, but still remain competitive as a playoff seed with the likes of Rondo, Rush, Granger, Millsap, Amare, M.Miller, Dyess, and Ridnour.

"If a team tries to trade an extended rookie between the date his extension is signed and the date it takes effect, his "trade value" for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the scale contract and each year of the extension. This is called the "poison pill provision."

So, Rondo's entire extension, including the $2,094,922 he's set to make this season, divided by six years would average out to: $9,809,570.

Bobcats accept this deal. We're sad to lose Rush and Rondo, but we're looking to go in a different direction here. Andre Miller gives us the veteran presence we'll need to move forward. Our goal is to win games and this helps us do that.

In light of the Rondo deal, the Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets have agreed upon a trade.

Indiana sends Paul Millsap ($10,000,000) and 2011 Indiana 2nd round pick in exchange for Josh Smith ($10,800,000). Deal obviously works!

Indiana accepts, we shed some money in the long term off of Millsap's deal and pick up a player that's an arguable better fit with our system and youth movement, that can be a playoff threat in the current and contender in the future. The average age of my starting lineup would be an exact 24.1 years old.

Houston accepts. We'd like Millsap's toughness and style of play more than Smith's, and he would be a good fit next to Yao and taking the physical pressure off of him.

If Anthony is traded during the 2006-07 season, then his outgoing salary from the Nuggets' perspective is his actual salary of $4,694,041. His incoming salary from the other team's perspective would be $13,518,358 -- the average of his 2006-07 salary and the assumed salaries in the extension.


If a team trades an extended rookie between the date his extension is signed and the date it takes effect, his "trade value" for the receiving team is the average of the salaries in the last year of the scale contract and each year of the extension (incoming value). This is called the poison pill provision. The sending team uses the player's actual salary when calculating their outgoing salary. They use the current-year maximum salary in place of the (unknown) maximum salary for a future season, if necessary.

So the trade doesn't work

Charlotte outgoing= 1,934,160 + 6,500,000 + 2,094,922 (his actual salary used in outgoing) = 10,529,082

Charlotte outgoing 10,529,082 x 1.25 = 13,161,352<19,995,240 (Charlotte incoming);
thus the trade does not work
