Sources: Giants Get Garko From Indians

Post#1 » by RIPskaterdude » Tue Jul 28, 2009 2:55 am

Fighting for the NL wild card but stuck in a slump, the San Francisco Giants made a move to boost their offense on Monday.

The team acquired first baseman Ryan Garko from the Cleveland Indians for Single A left-handed pitcher Scott Barnes.

The deal was first reported by ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Going into Monday's games, the right-handed hitting Garko was batting .285 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs in 78 games. In five seasons with Cleveland, he has a .283 average with 53 home runs and 235 RBIs.

At high Class A San Jose, Barnes was 12-3 with a 2.85 ERA in 18 games, all starts, with 99 strikeouts in 98 innings.

The Giants went into Monday's action two games behind the Colorado Rockies for the wild-card lead but had gone 3-7 in their last 10 games.

In conjunction with the trade, the Indians will call up infielder Andy Marte, who was batting .327 with 18 homers and 66 RBIs for the Triple-A Columbus Clippers.

Not a bad deal, though I don't think it'll add much help in the long run. Let's face it, Garko is not much of a home run hitter, and has no speed. He will hit for a decent average, though.

Garko isn't a 30 HR guy but he can easily hit 20.

Doesn't K a lot and his walk rates look decent, so he's a quality hitter. I don't think he's a FA until '11, so he'll be here for 2 full seasons. Enough time for Villalona to develop.

I don't know much about Barnes, but how do you guys feel about losing him as a prospect?

He'll probably split time with 'Kawa. Didn't Garko have a hard time getting pt due to his defense? That's a big step down from Travis who has played great d this year.

I don't know much (anything) about Barnes. I'd love to get your guys' opinion of him.

Barnes is a good prospect and could be a decent major leaguer one day. IIRC, he was rated the G's ninth best prospect by Baggs. Thing is, the Giants won't really need him to start in the next decade with Timmy, Cain, MadBum, Alderson, Wheeler, Sanchez and more. I'm warming up to this trade, Garko can step right in and can realistically be a .285/20/85 hitter.

There's also talk that they might deal for Freddy Sanchez...I like him since we need someone that plays a solid 2B and can hit/slap the ball for some more RBI's...

I think there's a very good chance Sanchez is a Giant after this series. Next is Josh 'double stacked gland salami on italian herb and cheese' Willingham.

Pirate fan here. Don't believe that site. That guy is a moron and everything he says, usually ends up being wrong. He is a joke.

Anyway, believe Dejan Kovacekiv from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. He follows the Pirates and has been right so far this trade deadline.

Per mlbtraderumors, Kovacevic just posted that the Giants found nothing wrong with Sanchez's knee and that they consider him 'day to day'.
