To bring it even fuller circle, I'm pretty sure The Wiz record shops were owned by the Jemal family -- as in Douglas Jemal, as is Douglas Development (http://www.douglasdev.com). Douglas owns most of 7th Street by the Verizon Center. He and the Pollins co-own the restored 6th and I synagogue. Fascinating stuff, I know.

Interesting, I didn't know that about Jemal and the Wiz record shops, I found it interesting because I worked for the Wiz competitor Waxie Maxies during college. I find it incredible that the now restored 6th St synagogue & the 16th St. JCC, both sat vacant and falling apart for many years.
Incredible considering the valuable locations and rich history. The 6th St synagogue & 16th ST JCC are both incredible spaces now that offer-up first-rate cultural happenings.

Lots of now-vibrant (or getting there) areas of the city -- Penn Quarter, 14th Street, U Street, H Street Northeast were decimated by the '68 riots after MLK was assassinated. There was lots of great real estate in this city that was sitting waiting to be re-developed. Look at Columbia Heights -- what it was 5 years ago and what it is now.

As should be obvious from my avatar, I am from North Carolina and a Bobcats fan. This most recent trade, however, was so horrendous that I have decided to adopt a second team, and the Wizards are my choice. I live in Silver Spring, so I already watch/attend many of their games, and I'm a big fan of Caron Butler (have him as a fantasy keeper as well) and Arenas so I'd like to make my fandom official.

Just to be clear, I'm not abandoning the Bobcats, and they will always be my #1 team, but I have wanted to start following this board for a little while, and now that they're primed to do well this year while the Bobcats are in the tank, I am excited to take on a new team. I hope my sports bigamy will not be taken too harshly.

Anyway, on to the form:
Name: Well, my real name is Peter, and ever since I first got AIM when I was like 12 I thought the misspelling was cool and it's been my online handle for everything ever since. It's usually fairly unique, which is nice, and easy to remember.

Age: 24

My deal: Engaged, will actually get married... eventually. I was born in New Jersey but lived in Raleigh, NC from 1st grade. I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, then moved up here to start a PhD program at UMD in US History. I'm now starting my third year, and I study 20th century culture. I love basketball and football, both college (UNC obviously) and pro (Panthers/Bobcats... now Wiz as well), though NBA is my favorite league. I'm an avid videogamer, I have a PS3 and a Wii and I love them both. Mostly I play NCAA Football, NBA2k, and Call of Duty.

I figure the rest pretty much got covered in my opening monologue.

Thanks for the welcome, I do love my stats, the joke on the Bobcats board is that I'm a cyborg and P.A.Y.D.R.O. is just an acronym. Really I agree with Jon Hollinger, stats are merely an extremely important tool, because they "remember" everything and never miss a game. You just have to merge them with your own understanding of events. The problem is that the GB (the Bobcats board is not guilty of this) is actively hostile to the idea that stats tell you anything (well, unless they agree with you....).

I am very interested to see how this cast of misfits works out... I was a fan of several of the young guns last year, but now I'm not sure what this depth chart ends up looking like with Foye/Miller etc. I'll read around.

My deal: I managed to accumulate the number of posts I currently have my first two years in college at UVA. Then I went to Australia my third year, was busy my fourth year, and have lived in Japan the last three years. During my time in Japan, I have not only not been able to watch any Wizards games, but I also have not have internet access at home (I have found that cutting off internet at home is the biggest gift of free time you can give yourself ), so, yeah, the posting has dried up completely.

As for what I have done here in Japan, first I taught English for two years in a small town on the JET Program, which mainly consisted of me sitting in the staff room teaching myself Japanese. Now I am getting my master's degree in international relations at Waseda university in Tokyo, with tuition and living expenses on the Japanese government's dime. Sweet sweet deal. And this summer I am in the political section of the American embassy in Tokyo on a 3 month internship. After I graduate, I'll try to join the foreign service, and if that doesn't work out, I'll probably move to China and study Chinese.

Wiz Connection: Grew up in Arlington, always played basketball, and began to follow the wiz right before going to college. Was a kwame fan but...well, you can't win them all can you?

Inspiration: Dorky reference from an epidemiology textbook. The author referred to a cause-of-death pie chart as a "mortality pie." I thought it was great in context, but even better out of context.

Age: Approaching my 30th bday

About me: Born & Raised in NWDC (Mt. Pleasant/Columbia Heights). Worked in pathology after graduating from GW in '01. (By the way, A-10 = most bootleg conference in NCAAs) Last year, I decided to go back to school, and am currently working on a PhD in epidemiology at UMd - Baltimore. While typing out this post, I am in the midst of an epic procrastination session.

I had the un-brilliant idea of buying a fixer-upper house close to campus (Hollins Market), which I am currently still working on and will be for the forseeable future. The phrase "bit off more than I can chew" seems tailor-made for my situation. At least I bought after the bottom fell out of the market.

Interests: I love music. Especially funk, soul, reggae, ska, and hard-core hip-hop. I DJ in these genres a couple times a month. I'm also into cooking, reading, & ceramics. Really into basketball, football, & hockey.

Questions for any baltimore folk on the board: Are wiz & caps games a standard part of the cable in your fair city? Are any of you skins fans? Do you know of any sports bars that specialize in skins games?

Wiz stuff: I'll relate a story. The first game I attended was when Bernard King was on the team. The Bullets had gotten absolutely crushed by the Sonics. I was there with a friend, and his dad somehow knew where to meet the players after the game. I saw King come out into the hallway before he saw us. By his facial expression, he just looked like he was having the worst day imaginable. When he saw us, however, he put on a happy face and was nice and engaging. I always think about that moment whenever I have to be polite/social/whatever in the middle of a bad day.

Yes. We get CSN which broadcasts most of the Wiz games. Occasionally, they'll put a game on CN8. On average, I get about 90% of the Wiz games and the ones I can't get, I find online.

Are any of you skins fans?

Nope. Baltimore natives are Ravens fans. You'll find the occasional Baltimore resident who is a product of D.C (and a Skins fan) but they're rare in Ravens-town.

Do you know of any sports bars that specialize in skins games?

No. Sorry, can't help you there.
