Now you're talkin' my language. I love running in the rain. I love running in the cold too. Winters can be a little long here in Ohio, but if it's 30 degrees outside and sunny, you can run and not even notice the cold. Everybody else hibernates inside for 4 months, I'm out in the sunshine 3 times a week (except when it's icy).

i was running here in balto last dec-feb in icy conditions. i would start of wearing gloves and a sweatshirt to only get back to the house about 30 minutes later with just a t-shirt. (and whatever i was wearing for bottoms obviously, smartasses) running and disrobing is dangerous btw

kinda off topic but if anyone has any questions about heavy weight lifting and building muscle mass id be happy to give some friendly advice. Ive been lifting for quite some time now and am pretty knowledgeable on the topic. weather ur trying to gain weight or loose weight, which ive had success in both, i always say its 25% gym or working out, 60% diet and 15% sleep to reach ur weight goals.

I can second what Zerocious said about working out. Except for a couple years of crew in high school, I rarely exercised, ate a lot of junk food, and became chubby by graduation. That summer, however, I got on a strict diet and started to work out, initially with the help of a personal trainer and I went from a chubby 5-10 166 to 150. Needless to say, I haven't been at that weight since, but I just cannot go without working out. The feeling you get immediately following your workout is just a wonderful one. You feel very relaxed and can think very clearly.

I lost about 12 pounds over the past six months, I've been doing elliptical work three or four times a week for forty minutes, cut out drinking juice and beer, no junk food breaks in the middle of the afternoon, no visits to Wendy's on the walk home from the metro, etc.

I think I've plateaued at about 162 (I'm 5'7"). When I was in college and ripped I weighed about 155, but that was with I think about an extra five pounds of muscle. At 162 I still have a disappearing belly button, I think I have to lose another five to start reducing that, and then I have flab on my back I still want to get rid of.

Yeah I noticed that doing elliptical work on consecutive days is really hard. I figured that was just because I was burning the sugar out of my blood quicker and getting to the fat burning portion of the workout faster, so I was actually accomplishing more on days that I couldn't do as much.

it's funny, people perception of a weight issue, being fat, or chubbiness. 5'10 and 166 and your chubbie? seriously? you're watching to much project runway my friend. i am about 5'11.5" and was getting to fit into 34-35" waists at 200+lbs. i once weighed 165 and looked like a polish concentration camp inmate! i was in college without a job, living off of pickles and ketchup!
i hope to get back down to 170 (where i won't be chubbie) and then add 5-10 lbs off muscle from that point on.

seriously

I'm 5-10.5 to 5-11.

I seriously wish I was under 180 pounds. My running would almost certainly
be considerably better at that weight.

I'll be real happy if my weight on Nov 1 (NYC marathon) is within a lb or
2 of 180. At that weight, running a 3:20 should be pretty do-able.

My weight typically cycles between 195-200 in the winter/spring to 180-185
in the summer/early fall. My perception on this is that it is mostly due to
the considerable biking I do from late-April/early May to late Oct-early Nov.
Last year I biked commuted nearly 2000 miles. This does wonders for both
your weight at your credit card bill from filling up your tank, esp last year
when gas prices were sky high.

Here's a great site for those wanting to keep track of their fitness goals:

http://www.fitday.com/

Just click the link for the "free online diet journal" and create your ID/password. You can track the foods you eat, the activities you do, and see how you're doing at reaching your goals. They've got all kinds of reports you can run to see what your nutrition is like, etc. Pretty cool for a free site.

or post something here

today's workout

swim - probably did around 2800 m

tomorrow I plan to bike to work

BTW - I don't know how accurate this is but there was a
website I found in the past called caloriesperhour.com

by their calculations I burn over 2600 calories by biking to work
23 miles (x2 for round trip) in 1.5 hours (again x2)

just for contrast - swimming 1:15 burns about 750 cals.
This makes sense to me given what I experience by way
of weight control when I bike vs when I don't. Swimming
is fairly constant for me.

Just picked up a charcaol grill. I'll probably be firing it up 3+ times per week to get great tasting lean protein and veggies. The diet is underway!

slummed the rest of the weekend

started to make up for it by biking to work today.

A couple more rides to work and I'll be breaking 1000 miles
for the year. I want to break 2000 by the time I stop riding
in the late fall.

Thanks to jim, nate, et al for your thoughts on running, technique and knees. I was talking to another board member who is a good athlete and in excellent shape for his age -- and he mentioned that his body just freaks out when he tries to run for distance. He plays a ton of hoops and is fine though. I wonder if just some people aren't suited for it.

To that end, my knee is still bothering me. I think I'm favoring it b/c my opposite ankle is now getting sore. This sucks! I rode the bike today at the gym (6 miles) to try to get in some cardio and keep as much stress off the knee as possible. By the way, I love early morning workouts. The endorphins are so much more useful to me to jumpstart my day than they are at night. Sometimes I sleep great, but sometimes it's like i've had caffeine.

Anyhow, any advice on what to do about the knee? Are there things I should try before going to see the orthopod, who practically have on speed dial?

Dat, how is your ankle?

i played on a longer court today than i normally play on and i was DEAD. hooping may keep calories in check but it's not a very good endurance builder.

fish,

evening workouts can tend to charge you up and make it hard
to sleep. I have that problem with evening swim workouts.

try to build endurance on the bike. You'll strengthen the knee
while you're doing it. Six miles is a start but I couldn't stand that
much on a stationary bike. Talk about boring, that makes lap
swimming sound exciting.

I've read/heard that stationary bikes are not quite as beneficial
for the same time period as a real bike. Get thyself outside!
Try for 10. You can do it. Pace yourself. PS wear a helmet BTW.
It's simply the smart thing to do.

I rode to work again making Mon-Tues a back 2 back. Planning
on tomorrow off, then go for another b2b on Thu-Fri for a 190 mile week.

I know this off-topic, but since I regularly check up on his website you should check out what a former co-worker of mine has been up to since February.

Two problem, Jimbo. I'm not a very accomplished bike rider and I live in a pretty busy urban neighborhood, so outside isn't a viable option for me. As for distance, it's not that I couldn't go ten miles yesterday (I could) it's just all about having enough time! My life is such that my workouts are designed to get me the most -- or a reasonable-- amount of benefit in a short time. I'm full of excuses, I know.

The boredom thing doesn't bother me. I can either watch TV or listen to music that I'm into and the time flies by for me. So I think I'm stuck on the stationary bike or maybe the eliptical until the knee calms down or I give in and go to the doc.

Frick.
