Dampier Returns After Mystery Illness
The skeptics will point out that the Mavericks went 6-2 without Erick Dampier and were 6-3 when he was in the lineup before his illness. But when he came back Monday night, it was an important moment for the team, not to mention Dampier.

The 6-11 center came into Monday's game averaging more than 17 rebounds per 48 minutes. That's a huge number, and any player who produces like that is one that every team wants on the floor. "He gave us what he could when he was out there," coach Rick Carlisle said.

The team can't disclose what went wrong with Dampier in Detroit on Nov. 15, but owner Mark Cuban did say that "we ran every test known to man." For Dampier, this game knocked off rust.

Kiki To Coach: The New Jersey Nets have settled in on General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe as their interim head coach. Vandeweghe was reluctant to accept the job without some veteran coaching added to the staff and Del Harris has agreed to join the team as the lead assistant.

Vandeweghe has never been a head coach, but has worked as an assistant coach and a development coach.

Andrew Bogut Returns Ahead of Schedule
Andrew Bogut felt the Bulls stole a game from the Bucks earlier this year. The former No. 1 pick made sure it didn’t happen again.

Bogut returned from an injury with 22 points, 15 rebounds and two big blocks in the closing minutes to rally Milwaukee to a 99-97 victory over Chicago on Monday night after squandering another big lead.

Bogut was supposed to be out up to four weeks with a lower left leg strain. Instead, the 7-footer only missed six games and proved to be the spark Milwaukee (9-7) badly needed to snap a four-game losing streak. Bogut was slated to play about 20 minutes, but ended up with 35. “I’ll be sore tomorrow,” Bogut said. “I’ll get in the ice bath, do my recovery and I should be all right.”

Hinrich Out 1-2 Weeks with Sprained Thumb
Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich will miss 1-2 weeks with a sprained left thumb, the team announced on Monday. "It's part of those things you can't control. As soon as Kirk feels like he's able and healthy and there's not a high risk of re-injuring that where he's out a long time, he'll be back," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said on Monday night before Chicago took on the Bucks in Milwaukee.

Hinrich injured the thumb during practice Wednesday. He missed most of last season with torn ligaments in his right thumb.

He was examined Monday by Bulls head team physician Dr. Brian Cole and hand specialists Dr. John Fernandez and Dr. Marc Cohen of Midwest Orthopedics at Rush University. Their examination confirmed the earlier diagnosis of a left thumb sprain.

Biedrins Could Be Out Another 3 Weeks
Warriors center Andris Biedrins is at least halfway through an injury that takes up to six weeks to heal, the Warriors announced Monday.

Biedrins, who has missed the past 11 games and 12 of the past 13 with strained groin and abdominal muscles, was evaluated before the game. He said he feels better and is making progress.

Also Monday, for the first time, the Warriors gave an indication how long Biedrins will be out. A team official said Biedrins' injury is referred to as "osteitis pubis" and that, according to head trainer Tom Abdenour, it's usually a four-to-six week injury. Biedrins is three weeks into that spell.

Jesse in Toronto:
Is the Jamal Crawford for Acie Law and Speedy Claxton trade the best steal since Pau Gasol to the Lakers for Kwame Brown?

Eric Pincus:
It doesn't carry the same significance, unless you see the Hawks getting to the NBA Finals.

Jeremy in UK:
should the Bulls try to package Salmon and Tyrus(when hes back) to get a shooter? they dun really have anyone who can stretch the defense for Rose and Deng to drive in...

Luke Byrnes:
There is no doubt that the Bulls need to find someone who can stretch the defense. They have really missed Ben Gordon in that sense. However, I don't really see the Bulls rushing to make something happen. If they were to get bowled over by an offer they couldn't refuse, that might be another story, but they are in a position to be big time spenders in the free agent market this summer. Unless they can get someone who will make them a contender this year or an expiring deal (McGrady?), I think they stand pat and, perhaps, go after a guy like Joe Johnson.

I heard Milicic has been having good practices in NY but he gets no chance since Dantoni uses PF as a C.People are really hard on him given that he hasnt gotten a chance to get comfortable in NBA other then Orlando where he played well?

Luke Byrnes:
Darko has been pretty solid when he has gotten minutes. I think he clearly wasn't ready to be a rotation player when he came to the Pistons back in 2003. (Do you think Dumars regrets letting Carmelo Anthony slip through the cracks?) Darko is an NBA talent but I expect him to be back playing overseas next season. If that is the case, the young man still made over $30M in the NBA. Not too shabby!

Pistons-Bulls Preview
Ben Gordon has probably been looking forward to facing the Chicago Bulls since signing with the Detroit Pistons over the summer. A sprained ankle, though, could prevent that from happening Wednesday night. Gordon hopes to be able to play against his former team for the first time as the Pistons visit the Bulls. Drafted third overall by Chicago in 2004, Gordon led the Bulls in scoring the past four seasons but said in July that they never offered him a contract once he hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Detroit signed him to a five-year deal worth $50-plus million. "I mean they didn't pursue me at all. They didn't even make an offer so it was pretty much a one-man race," Gordon told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago in July. He got off to a strong start with Detroit (6-11) before getting hurt against Cleveland last Wednesday, averaging a team-high 19.8 points. Gordon missed the last two games, but practiced Monday and is listed as questionable."It's feeling pretty good," Gordon told the Pistons' official Web site. "If it continues to progress the way it has been, hopefully I'll be able to play on Wednesday." The Bulls (6-9) could have used Gordon's scoring on their annual circus road trip. They opened the trip with a 101-87 win over Sacramento on Nov. 17 before dropping the last five matchups. Chicago failed to score more than 100 in any of the five defeats while allowing opponents to average 109.2 points.

The Bulls had their best defensive effort since the win over the Kings on Monday night. They rallied from 14 down in the third quarter to take a two-point lead in the closing minutes, but Brad Miller missed a shot at the buzzer that would have tied it and Chicago fell 99-97."That's a shot I've shot a lot," Miller told the Bulls' official Web site. "It just came up short. ... It's well in my range. I felt comfortable. Just didn't make it. Now we've got to take advantage of these home games coming up and get back on the winning ways."Chicago plays 16 of its next 23 at the United Center before heading out on a season-high seven-game trip at the end of January. The Bulls have played the fewest home games in the league, going 4-1 and holding opponents to 86.8 points per game."I know how hard it is from last year to get back to .500," point guard Derrick Rose said. "We've got to take advantage." The Bulls' first chance to get on track comes against a Pistons team that ended a seven-game losing streak by beating Atlanta 94-88 on Sunday.

Detroit was led by another former Bull, Ben Wallace, who had 11 of the team's 24 offensive rebounds. Wallace, traded to Cleveland in February 2008 after spending a season and a half with Chicago, finished with 18 rebounds and 10 points. "Ben was phenomenal again today," coach John Kuester said. "It's amazing the level that he is still grabbing rebounds." Wallace led the NBA in rebounding twice in his first stint in Detroit, averaging 13.0 in 2001-02 and 15.4 in '02-'03. He has started every game this season, grabbing 9.9 boards per contest.Wallace's strong play is coming at a good time for the Pistons, who have been playing with a limited roster because of injuries to starters Richard Hamilton (ankle), Tayshaun Prince (back) and Gordon (ankle). On Sunday, forward Charlie Villanueva was hit in the face while being fouled and suffered a broken nose. He is listed as questionable for Wednesday. Chicago took three of four meetings with Detroit in each of the last three seasons, winning all six matchups at home.

The Newest Masked Man
Charlie Villanueva plans to play Wednesday night at Chicago, wearing the same type of protective mask popularized by teammate Rip Hamilton. The Pistons forward underwent surgery Monday to reset his broken nose, which happened late in Sunday’s win over Atlanta. Bleeding profusely after smashing into Ben Wallace’s hip, Villanueva managed to stay in the game long enough to shoot two free throws before leaving the court. The bleeding continued for another half an hour. “Once I saw the blood, I knew something was wrong. But it didn’t feel like it was broken or nothing like that,” Villanueva said Tuesday. “Once it stopped bleeding, it took about 30 minutes after the game for it to calm down a little bit to take X-rays. And then we were able to tell it was broken.”Jeremy Murray, the orthotist who has made Hamilton’s masks since 2004, made a plaster mold of Villanueva’s face following the surgery. On Tuesday, Villanueva went to Murray’s office at the Michigan Hand and Sports Rehab Centers in Warren to get the mask refined from a rough plastic shell into a smooth, custom-fitted mask.

In between fittings – when Murray would ask Villanueva if he felt any discomfort or obstructed vision, then return to his workshop to make adjustments – Villanueva commented on the experience with Pistons.com and on his Twitter account, @CV31. “Getting my mask fitted,” he tweeted, “I think it’s going to be a good look.” Villanueva’s apprehension was palpable the first time he tried on the mask, which was larger than it needed to be so Murray could take proper measurements to reduce the mask’s contour. Villanueva looked relieved when he later tried on the trimmed-down version. “It felt a little bit different, a little weird, but hopefully it does a great job where I don’t actually feel it,” he said. … I don’t want to have a broken nose again, so playing with this mask if very important and hopefully I’ll play with it and nothing happens.” Villanueva was at practice before going to Murray's office, and spoke with Hamilton about what to expect wearing the mask. “He said I’ll get used to it,” Villanueva said. “It’s just going to take some time.”

Since breaking his nose for a third time in 2004, Hamilton has worn the mask in every game he's played. He'll wear it until he retires to avoid the serious medical conditions that could arise from a fourth break. Villanueva, however, shouldn’t need the mask once his nose fully heals in a few weeks. But would he consider wearing it anyway? “I don’t know,” he said, “Maybe it’ll be a UCONN thing.” Be careful, Ben Gordon. Be very careful. Get more of the interview with Eli Zaret during Wednesday’s game broadcast on FS Detroit, Pistons Weekly on Channel 4 (Sunday, Midnight). You can also see exclusive video and photos from Villanueva’s mask-fitting on Pistons.com, Facebook and Twitter.

Gauntlet Ahead
Welcome to Rodney Stuckey’s world. Already carrying an inordinate burden with Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince and Ben Gordon sidelined by injury, here’s what the rest of his work week looks like: a Wednesday matchup with reigning Rookie of the Year Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls; a Friday date with the front-runner to succeed him, Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings; and a Sunday clash with Washington’s Gilbert Arenas, an MVP-level talent before sitting out most of the past two years with knee problems. And, beyond that, another intriguing possibility. The Pistons will wrap up this four-game block of games against Eastern Conference opponents in similar straits – all of them on the heels of the East’s big four of Cleveland, Boston, Orlando and Atlanta, fighting for those final four playoff berths – at Philadelphia, where Allen Iverson, by all indications, will be suiting up for the 76ers. “These next four games are very crucial,” Stuckey said after Tuesday’s practice, one that included post-practice sightings of Hamilton, Prince and Gordon all getting in some shooting, though Hamilton and Prince remain out while Gordon and Charlie Villanueva – who showed up in the morning but then left to get fitted for a protective mask for the broken nose suffered in Sunday’s win over Atlanta – are questionable. “They’re all in a similar boat, but one thing about us is we’re in this position because we really don’t have our players healthy and those teams are playing with all their players. Hopefully, when we get everybody back, we can turn this all around.” All of those teams have, in fact, been touched by injuries, too. Chicago is still without Tyrus Thomas, Milwaukee went without Michael Redd for 11 games and late Tuesday learned he’d skip the two-game road trip that includes The Palace due to a sore knee and Andrew Bogut just returned after missing six games, and Philadelphia’s interest in Iverson was driven by the broken jaw suffered last week by Louis Williams, while promising 76ers young big man Marreese Speights remains out with a knee injury. But Stuckey’s point is well-taken. Nobody’s been confronted by injuries quite like the Pistons, which has forced John Kuester to ask much of Stuckey at both ends of the floor. “The amount of pressure we’ve put on Rodney Stuckey, having to guard ones, twos and threes, he’s handled it extremely well,” Kuester said. “I’m very proud of the way he’s defended. He’s a competitor and he’s growing as an offensive player and as a leader. “Both (Stuckey and Rose) of them are very talented players. The thing that Rodney continually gets better at is his ability to guard so many players. Joe Johnson, he did a great job. He’s guarded Brandon Roy, Kobe Bryant – that’s one of the things that separates Stuckey from a lot of point guards is his ability to defend.”

The Pistons’ run of injuries, in fact, might relieve Stuckey of the duty of guarding Rose and Jennings, at least on a full-time basis. If Chucky Atkins starts, and even if Gordon is cleared to play and starts instead, Stuckey figures he’ll probably spend a good chunk of the Chicago game guarding 6-foot-7 shooting guard John Salmons. But if he stays on the opposition point guard, he’ll span the spectrum of challenges in going from Rose to Jennings. In Rose, he gets a point guard with many of the same physical attributes that sets Stuckey apart – strength, speed and athleticism – and in Jennings he gets perhaps the NBA’s quickest point guard who changes direction in a heartbeat. “Derrick Rose is young, athletic, can get up and down the court,” Stuckey said. “He’s really quick. I just see it as a challenge. I know Derrick Rose is one of the top young point guards, becoming one of the top point guards in the league. When you go up against somebody like that, it’s a challenge. And I’m always up for a good challenge.” Stuckey welcomed Rose to the Pistons-Bulls rivalry with a memorable 40-point performance last December at The Palace. The Pistons needed about every point, too, winning 104-98. Rose got in early foul trouble and eventually fouled out in just 21 minutes, scoring 10. “I don’t think about that game,” Stuckey said, then grinning, “but I’d like to do that again.” Jennings, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the NBA’s most surprising players. Jennings was bound for Arizona until bypassing college altogether over concerns about his academic eligibility. He signed to play with Rome in the Italian pro league last season, but playing time dwindled as the year unfolded, making him extremely difficult for scouts – who’d had Jennings on their radar for years already – to properly evaluate. “His circumstances were really unique, for sure,” said George David, Pistons personnel director. “I don’t think there’s been anybody that difficult to evaluate, that I can recall. Some guys have been challenges taking them where they were taken. There was a lot of scrutiny over Marvin Williams taken at two because he didn’t even start (for 2005 NCAA champion North Carolina, when Williams was a freshmen on a junior-dominated team that included first-rounders Raymond Felton, Sean May and Rashad McCants). When Jennings’ team made the playoffs last season – losing in a first-round upset to Angelico Biella, which included Jonas Jerebko – Jennings wasn’t even put on the active list. His agent pulled him from the NBA’s green room on draft night on fears that he’d fall out of the lottery altogether.

But Milwaukee, led by former Pistons executive John Hammond, pulled the trigger at No. 10. Jennings, named top rookie in the Eastern Conference for November on Tuesday, is the major reason Milwaukee – widely expected to be battling winless New Jersey and struggling New York for worst record in the East – is now among that group of teams fighting the Pistons for a playoff berth. The Bucks are 9-7 and currently sit in the No. 5 spot in the conference, though they’ve benefited from a favorable schedule. Jennings is averaging 21.8 points and 5.7 assists in 35 minutes a game and, shockingly to scouts who questioned his shooting range and accuracy, he’s making half of his 3-point attempts while taking almost five per game. “That was the big issue with him,” David said. “But one of the things that has helped him tremendously is that by getting off to a good start, his confidence has really gone up. It’s not the confidence of a rookie. To his credit, he doesn’t appear to be someone who was simply going to accept what the book on him was. And the book on him was that he can’t shoot or he can’t do this or that. He seems to be a guy that has been tackling every single one of those head on. I’m sure Milwaukee would tell you they wouldn’t be where they are without him.” Among the players to whom Jennings has evoked comparisons are Tiny Archibald, Allen Iverson and Tony Parker for his quickness, change-of-direction ability, playmaking skill and, in Parker’s case, for the uncanny ability to get into the paint and drop floaters over the outstretched hands of shot-blockers. “He’s very crafty and he can shoot the ball as well,” Stuckey said. “He was making tough shots (when Jennings scored 24, shooting 3 of 4 from the 3-point arc, in Milwaukee’s 96-85 home Oct. 30 win over the Pistons) that night. He’s just a great player and he’s put in his time to put up a lot of shots to get better and it’s paying off. He’s one of the good young point guards coming up in this league.” Stuckey, in fact, thinks it might be time to start adding the floater to his offensive repertoire. “That’s something I need to work on,” he said. “Instead of always going in there and banging my body against the big guys, maybe it’s time to start doing a couple of floaters.” If he can borrow the best of the point guards he’ll run into this week alone as the Pistons run the gauntlet of Eastern Conference playoff hopefuls, his team’s playoff odds will increase dramatically. “That’s just part of the NBA,” he said. “You’re going up against the best players each and every night. You’ve just got to be ready to play.”

Ray Allen broke out of his shooting slump with 27 points, Kendrick Perkins added 21 points and 12 rebounds and the Boston Celtics cruised past the Charlotte Bobcats 108-90 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

Charlotte never recovered as Gerald Wallace scored just five points after getting into early foul trouble. Nazr Mohammed had 16 points for the Bobcats, who entered giving up a league-low 87.9 points a game.

Stephen Graham failed miserably trying to defend Kevin Garnett, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Nobody could keep a body on Perkins, who hit 9 of 10 shots and was only five points shy of matching a career high. And the blowout took shape in the first half as Brown stubbornly kept Wallace on the bench.

Allen Iverson offered non-guaranteed deal by 76ers: Source
Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers are closer to a reunion. A person with knowledge of the contract talks says the Sixers offered a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to Iverson on Tuesday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract talks had not been made public. Iverson, his agent and business manager met with team president Ed Stefanski, coach Eddie Jordan and two other members of the organization Monday during the first formal meeting between the Sixers and their former MVP. Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA finals. Another person with knowledge of the deal, who also spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the talks had not been made public, said Iverson's decision should come Wednesday.

The person says the 76ers are taking a chance on Iverson because he's the best free-agent guard available and the financial commitment is minimal. The Sixers would owe just under $650,000 if they guarantee his contract for the remainder of the season on Jan. 10. "What is the downside if you can cut him any time you want?" the person said. Iverson would still need to undergo a physical before the deal is complete. As of Tuesday night, the Sixers had not heard back from Iverson's agent Leon Rose. Iverson announced his intention to retire last week after no other team expressed an interest is signing the four-time scoring champion. The 6-foot Iverson played three games this season with Memphis before taking a leave of absence to attend to personal matters. He was waived after the two sides agreed to part ways. He's on the brink of getting a second chance with the Sixers(5-13), who have lost seven straight entering Wednesday night's game at Oklahoma City and need Iverson to spark sagging ticket sales and their playoff chances.

The Sixers finish their four-game road trip Saturday against the Charlotte Bobcats and Iverson's former nemesis, coach Larry Brown. Brown said Tuesday he was upset that Iverson's best option was a non-guaranteed deal. "I get worried about that message, but I also admire Philly for giving him a chance," he said. "That's more meaningful for me. I look at a guy that scored 20,000 points and played hurt and did so much and now he's got to play for a non-guaranteed contract, that's pretty troubling for me." If Iverson accepts the offer, his likely debut would come Monday night at home against Denver. In a double-dose of intriguing timing, the Sixers play at home Dec. 9 against Detroit.

Danilo Gallinari had 27 points and 10 rebounds, and the New York Knicks beat Phoenix 126-99 on Tuesday night, snapping a five-game losing streak and giving their coach a resounding victory over his old team.

David Lee added 24 points and Al Harrington had 22 for the Knicks, who rang up a season-best 71 first-half points, then blew it open when Gallinari scored seven points in a span of barely a minute midway through the third quarter.

Steve Nash had 20 points and eight assists for the Suns (14-4), who came in with the NBA's best record. They had won four straight by an average of 21.3 points, but this time found themselves on the other side of a blowout.
