travel expanses for workouts and more

Post#1 » by hoops13 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:37 am

hello, does anyone have knowledge on how it works with the coverage of costs for workouts of potential rookies before the draft, international players and other players that NBA teams want to see in a work out. Who pays for travel to the team, hotel, meals and are the players given a contract with insurance or not?

if you could help with these questions and let me know where more information can be found that would be great.

thanks

The team will pay for travel, hotel and meals. The player gets no contract or insurance policy in his name. I'm not positive, but I suspect that if a player was injured while working out, he would be covered by the team's blanket liability insurance policy. Sorta like a guest to your home would be covered in case of an accident by your homeowner's insurance.

@ dunkenstein: thanks for the quick reply. is there a place with this information that can be used as a reference or proof for this information? i wasn't able to find something on that in the CBA, but maybe I just didn't see it.

It's not in the CBA. This is just what I have heard from people who either work on teams or represent players.

The expense reimbursements for post-draft free agency ie after July 1 (including summer league players) are covered in the CBA ...and in essence the reimbursements defined there are the same types as those Dunk mentioned for the pre-draft ones. Notice this is not a "Summer League" Contract, but rather in essence an agreement to cover summer expenses and insurance in evaluating players not otherwise under contract to the team. It would include summer league players of course. It is not allowed for a team's own free agents, but anyone else is fair game if they aren't under contract.

I'd guess that the reason there is no mention for pre-draft expense reimbursement is the fact that the CBA only covers relations with players who have "entered" the NBA, and player entry happens via going through the Player Entry Draft, whether drafted or not.

From Art VII Sec 4
(i) Summer Contracts

....The only consideration that may be provided to a player signed to a Summer Contract, prior to the start of the Regular Season, is [u]per diem, lodging, transportation, compensation in accordance with paragraph 3(b) of the Uniform Player Contract, and a disability insurance policy covering disabilities incurred while such player participates in summer leagues or rookie camps for the Team...
