Salmons' current salary?

$6,429,150 according to ESPN's NBA Trade Machine.

I believe he had 15% trade kicker invoked upon his trade from the Kings to Chicago.

Still, that $6.4 million figure seems a bit too much.

W/out the kicker he was scheduled to earn $5.1 million.

I know it is a strict rule how to divide the trade kicker between the years but still, there is a ~25% rise in salary.

I doubt it is a valid number.

Somebody help?

John Salmons: Signed a five year, $25.52 million contract in July 2006. Had a 15% trade kicker, which, upon his trade to Chicago, saw $973,151 added to the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons of the contract.

So basically, John Salmons had already been traded once, which triggered his trade kicker. So the most recent trade to the Bucks had no impact on his salary.

Not sure where you got $5.1M salary from, but Sham & ESPN have had Salmon's salary at $6,429,151 ($6,429,150 for ESPN TM) all season long.

Well, you are going with ESPN while I am going with Coon.

Salmons' original deal called him to receive:

06-07 - $4,400,000
07-08 - $4,752,000
08-09 - $5,104,000
09-10 - $5,456,000
10-11 - $5,808,000

Total of 5-yrs, $25.52 million.

The last year is a player option, therefore not counting towards the 15% trade kicker.

No matter how you add the numbers, Mister Coon says the trade kicker cannot be for more than 15% of the remaining value of the contract.

$5.456,000 * 1.15 = $6,274,400 (which is not the $6,429,151 as reported in ESPN I guess?)

Could it be Sham or whoever it is, saw that number at ESPN and simply subtracted the scheduled $5,456,000 and got it's wrong $973,151 trade kicker?

I believe your confusion lies in the fact that you are not applying Mr. Coon correctly. As lakerfan has mentioned, trade bonuses are only paid to a player upon his first trade and not any subsequent trades. In Salmons’ case, this was the trade from the Kings to the Bulls in February 2009. The subsequent trade from the Bulls to the Bucks this season had no effect on his salary, as no trade bonus was triggered.

Also, Salmons appears to have an ETO next season as opposed to a player option. The distinction is quite important because seasons following an ETO are included when calculating the value of a trade bonus.

Salmons was traded approximately 2/3 of the way through last season. The calculation of the trade bonus, which was paid when he was first traded, would therefore be as follows:

15% * ($5,104,000 * approx. 1/3 + $5,456,000 + $5,808,000) = $1,946,302

For salary cap purposes, the value of a trade bonus is applied to team salary among the remaining years of the contract, excluding years following an ETO, in proportion to the percentage of salary in each of those seasons that is guaranteed. That leaves $973,151 for each of 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons and nothing for the 2010/11 season.

Therefore, his salary for this season is accurately listed as $5,456,000 + $973,151 = $6,429,151. His salary for next season remains $5,808,000.
