I guess this explains the oil spill debacle. Turns out Jim Joyce has been running that for the White House. Instant replay on everything could now be fair play. Rant coming. This is terrible for the game and umpires. In a year that MLB could become tremendously popular, tickets could go up, and the game would get great publicity for setting an astonishing record with 3 perfect games, Jim Joyce ruined it. In a world where the credibility of other umps/refs cough. cough. NBA was at question and MLB has its share of blown calls, but arguably had the best umpires in all of sports Jim Joyce ruined that. However the fact that this could force MLB's hand in replay being fair game for obviously wrong strike/ball, safe/out calls or incredibly close plays is good. Poor Galarraga. Poor Tigers. Poor Joyce. Guy's life could literally be ruined now.

That video is painful to watch. You can see the joy on the kids face the moment he knows he's got it. Just sad.

Agreed.

This was such a shame. Perfect game taken away. I feel so bad for armando galaraga.

My head is swimming, but I'm pretty sure joyce messed up the call an inning before that too. When the tigers were batting and there was a play at first. He should never work a game at first, ever again.

The worst part is when Cabrera is barking at him, he barks back. It sums up everything that's wrong with major league umpires. He can't even fall on his sword and do what he's supposed to do and just ignore it.

He did screw up the previous inning...a much closer call, though.

Most important call of my career and I kicked the s$&t out of it. I cost that kid a perfect game.

The sad thing is it would only take a minute to review and change the call.

Technology is there to do a lot of things without the umpires. A computer can call strikes and balls and everybody would always have the same strike zone.

Is there any way this can be reversed by MLB? Change the call and make it a perfect game?

Accounts out of Detroit have Jim Joyce utterly distraught about his blown call. He might never be the same. Very sad.

"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay."

Ya that counts for something. But it was still an atrocious call.

I would be all for the league changing this to a perfect game. It's not the type of decision that should set any sort of precedent, but Galarraga deserves to be in the history books for that.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.
