Re: GM a Team - Deep Thoughts/Suggestions
Another idea that just popped into my head would be everyone drafting a complete team instead of starting with current rosters. Would even the playing field a bit more at the start since honestly the best teams in the league are usually the best teams in the league at then end, or the ones with the most assets. Im not 100% certain but I thin that teams like the Lakers and Portland have finished near the top every game no matter how they were run and other teams always finish last.
but then that would take forever and I always like trying to take a horrible team and rebuild it.
then im also sure you would have really good players dropping down because of their salaries in the draft and people ending up with top contenders so it wouldnt work.

Re: GM a Team - Deep Thoughts/Suggestions
Mascot, I can see the problem you're alluding to, and right now I'm working through my rankings and they seem to tie up with your post.
Maybe the day the game starts, the GM should rank the teams according to their current NBA standings... e.g. Cleveland 1st, LA 2nd, Orlando 3rd, New Jersey 30th etc... and when we come to rank teams on the final day, we compare our 'contender' rankings to the original list.
So.... Miami now rank 1st - at the beginning they ranked 14th.... they get +14 points.
........Cleveland now rank 5th - at the beginning they ranked 1st... they get -5 points.
So we have:
Contender Rankings
Rebuild Rankings
+/- improvement rankings
LA would still do well on contender rankings, probably average on rebuild and good on overall GM - but if they lost some places, they stand to lose more on +/- improvement rankings.
Likewise if New Jersey gain 15 places, whilst still only 15th in the overall rankings, they get a bonus +15 points for doing well.
Some thought would have to be given on the overall weighting, and whether we then need the GM Performance rankings, but I think it goes a long way to address the issues GM's have with certain teams.

I think the issue is that there are only a limited number of players who you can build an NBA championship team around(I would say it is probably 10 or fewer). And these players are difficult/impossible to obtain. I think the way to address this is to allow GMs who improve their teams to pick a better team, the next game. So maybe the +/- could be used when assigning teams for the next game. So it will likely be the same teams at the top, but different GMs.

Any thoughts to automating the roster management/trade checking?
Does anyone know of available open source code for a fanatasy basketball application/website? With some tweaking it might be a lot faster than starting from scratch.

Since we are running into this now, I have a suggestion....
If only one season being played, a free agent signed cannot be traded for the remainder of the game. If multiple seasons are being played, a signed free agent cannot be traded to another team for a minimum of a month.

I completely agree. Not something I picked up on at the start, so I won't change my stance half way through, however these rules make sense and I think they should be implemented in the next game.
There is no consolation prize. Winning is everything.

Here's a suggestion. Can people please try and take what the other teams plans are when they make offers. I understand that some people here just make trades to make trades. But I am not. And I get really irritated because I keep opening up emails to see what kind of offers I get and all I get are offers that clearly don't take my needs into account. One guy asked me if I wanted to trade the overpaid Joe Johnson. I had just signed Joe Johnson to that contract a few days b4.

Sums up what I don't like about the game.....and then said people complain because a guy didn't sign with them in free agency to be a 5th string player.

agree 100%, totally annoying
I offered up Jeff Green (starter for a playoff team) and Glen Davis (key reserve for a finals team) for an upgrade and was offered a reserve player for one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Can we also say that once you acquire someone via trade, you cannot post a new deal involving said player until 7 days after the commish approves the deal.....
I think this would help relieve the trader's itch a lot of posters have. They see someone traded they like, and immediately try to trade for them.
I know this game is for fun. But it would be nice to have one somewhat realistic too. We finally have gotten a realistic free agency period. Now, it'd be nice to get more realistic trading, as well.
Honestly when I see its the same posters sending me emails sayin' "Interested in a deal, check my roster," I've almost started to block them out. There are times I don't even know what team made the offer. If you are not going to take the time to offer me a deal, I'm not going to go out of my way to look at your roster to come up with one ( Especially when you've already made multiple deals that week. That tells me you are just makin deals because you are bored, and don't have a vision for your team. Trust me, I've been there before, I know....)
I enjoy this game, I really do. But its things like this that are beginning to drive me away, and get on my nerves.

Re: GM a Team - Deep Thoughts/Suggestions
I agree with basically every point klomp, funny that you say these things and forget that I have had 2 teams the entire game and you have asked me for trades, lol.
In past games, I have suggested the trade delay on newly traded players (like in the NBA) and delayed(or no trades) on newly signed FA's.
But agree we finally had a successful FA period! and that is a positive. We also got alot of new GM's this round (mostly because alot of the regulars have gotten sick of the crap rankings and rediculous offers). Lets hope the successful FAperiod will be a preview to teams posting writeups and voting for real, noot just to help thenselves.

Well, usually I look for the team name I'm looking for. This time I was looking for your name after you posted your BOS rumor. Your first roster is LA. I got confused.....

How about people think before they offer trades that would give me 6 centers...

I also think it would be fun if we did a 100% fantasy draft, like on video games. Except you can trade draft picks. Current contracts are taken into account...you can't draft a free agent. If you want to make a splash in free agency then you trade away picks or pick players with ultra-low salaries...example (Collison first round, Batum second, Stuckey third). That'd be sick!
We have a separate rookie draft.

That would be a different game entirely. These are just suggestions for improving the current GM a Team game.
