I looked into Moncrief vs. Erving some more because I wasn't comfortable with my inclusion of Squid at the expense of Julius. Watched game 1 one of the finals.

I'm comfortable with my Moncrief pick. Why? It wasn't because I didn't like how Julius played. He missed some open shots, but that happens. His passing was smart and valuable for that team, his defense looked like Lebron at his absolute best, and his open-court play was spectacular yet good for the team.

I'm comfortable because I realized the only reason I was uncomfortable in the first place was because I thought Erving had to be a top 5 player since those Sixers were a GOAT team. However, those Sixers were stacked. Absolutely loaded. Erving and Jones created so much havoc defensively with their pure movement, energy, and length. Malone inside was very good, and Cheeks played excellent man defense while being pesky like Rajon Rondo. They swarmed you everywhere you went. Clint Richardson and Mark Iavaroni were good defenders, too- especially Clint. The team is physical.

They were also a great passing team. Bobby Jones is the definition of a smart passing hub who takes advantages of his opportunities to score efficiently. Moses is the GOAT offensive rebounder who is just a monster in the interior. Erving and Toney are awesome on the wings, and Cheeks creates and runs the team.

They are absolutely menacing. Offensively and defensively, it is like you're playing against six players.

The team is so good that merely having a top 6 player will do, especially when paired with the RPOY.

After the Bird, Magic, MJ, Shaq, Kobe era, etc, you aren't going to get a bunch of people's opinion when Moses Malone is considered the best player in the league. I think the 70's will be tough as well for voting for a bunch of people as well.

Portions of the seventies are quite exciting, actually.

My thoughts are the same.
I remember your posts from the RPOY project, you consistently brought it. Please continue to do so, sir. This board needs guys like you to counteract ... worthless posters

I agree, but look at the threads now. This was to end Wed morning and only 3 pages have been done. Imagine what it will be as we keep going down.

Not only this. Also the free agency is stealing time (at least my time). Maybe even another day more, because until now I couldn't look into this year at all and I don't want to vote again with a deeper look like the last year. Not quite sure whether others are interested at all.

Quick notable blurbs from SI.

April 25:

Sports Illustrated wrote:PRO BASKETBALL—Philadelphia swept its best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series with New York, while Milwaukee and San Antonio were poised to follow suit. The 76ers beat the Knicks in Game 4 at Madison Square Garden 105-102, and as was the case in the previous three games, Center Moses Malone, with 29 points (23 in the second half) and 15 rebounds, proved too much for the Knicks inside. Malone averaged 31.3 points and 15.8 rebounds for the series. After Milwaukee dispatched visiting Boston 107-99 in Game 3 of the other Eastern semifinal, the Celtics faced a straight-set elimination for the first time in 32 years. The Bucks, behind Sidney Moncrief's 22 points, gored the Celts 116-95 in the opener at Boston Garden and then in Game 2 overcame a 59-42 Celtic lead with 11:47 left in the third period to win 95-91. The Celtics played that game without Larry Bird, who was home with a high fever. While Bird was burning up, Denver was burning out in its Western Conference semi against San Antonio. In a 152-133 San Antonio victory at San Antonio in Game 1, the Spurs established a league playoff record for points in a half (82). The game also set playoff marks for most points by two teams in a half (150) and most points in a game (285). Guards Johnny Moore and George Gervin, who combined for 66 points in Game 1, had 56 more in a 126-109 second-game win. Moore, who as a rookie in 1979 was cut by then- Spurs Coach Doug Moe, now of Denver, got sweet revenge in Game 3. He scored 39 points, including a three-pointer with 12 seconds left in overtime, to lift the Spurs past Denver 127-126. In the three games, Moore averaged 29.7 points and 16.3 assists. Portland avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Lakers in the other Western semifinal series by beating Los Angeles 108-95 in Game 4 at Portland

The defending champion Lakers advanced to the championship round by ousting San Antonio in the Western Conference finals in six games. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 28 points and Magic Johnson's 15 rebounds and 16 assists led L.A. to a 101-100 series-clinching triumph at San Antonio, after the Spurs had stayed alive with a 117-112 victory in Game 5 in Los Angeles.

Mike had 35 with food poisoning and Larry sat with a fever?

And look at those sick numbers from Johnny Moore!

Okay, since a couple of people have indicated they want to vote but can't yet - and because this is a very strange week - extending to Friday.

I remember thinking "Who the F is Johnny Moore?" when I went to my first Spurs game and saw his number hanging at the Alamodome. Knew Gervin, sorta knew Silas, had no clue who Moore was. But as previously posted, he was on his way to a great career before illness cut it short. Mountain fever I think, some sort of meningitis. I used to hang at the same bar with his nephew a few years back. Manages a Target.

When I first read this, I read "menage a trois".

I spent about 30 seconds trying to make that make sense, then I realized the last word was 'Target'.

I then spent another 30 seconds trying to figure out what 'menage a target' meant. I figured it had to be some kind of new slang that I hadn't caught onto yet...maybe it meant something like that since you knew his nephew, it was almost like the 3 of you knew each other, which is kind of related to trois...but then I remembered that it was the "trois" that became target, not the "menage" part. So I was stumped.

Then my eyes finally focused and I realized that you said "Manages a Target". As in, his nephew manages a target. Ohhhhhhh, now I get it!

Moral to the story? It's been WAY too long since I had sleep.

Don't feel bad. I read it as "menage a tar-jhay" and thought "sounds like a cool bar."

And only noticed what it really said after reading your post.

I was trying to be funny, and for entirely unintended reasons, I guess it was. Score?

And he actually does manage a franchise in the department-store chain called Target.

104 degree fever from a "virus." Not sure they would even let someone play with that. Came back for G3 and looked a little weak-legged. Doug Collins thought "he was still feeling the effects" of it.

I'm only being like 10% serious here, but I can't imagine it was all that healthy for Jordan to play. He looked like he was going to drop dead at any moment.

I just realized how many ballots have Bird 4th or 5th. I'm not understanding that vote based on the last 3 years (84-86).

I look at the stats and watch film and, while I don't think 1983 is Larry Bird's peak, he's a pretty darn similar ballplayer to 1984. That 83 Celtics team had all sorts of issues: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm

But they still posted a 5.3 SRS...and yet didn't earn the first round bye due to the results of the other ECF teams. (Frankly, the 84 Celtics with DJ replacing an old Tiny Archibald were just a better overall team.)The opening series they had to play was grueling. Bird missed G2 and wasn't completely back in G3. So is he being dropped down the rankings because of G1 and G4? What were his stats in those games? Did anyone watch them? Would 2 stinkers even justify that kind of precipitous drop. It's not like the competition behind him is exactly steep this year.

Season 2   21.7     15.7  22.4  12.6 +3.0%   .225

Season 1 is 1984. Season 2 is 1983. I don't get these votes...?
