The Dutch never finish the job. They get what they deserve though. Nice win for Spain.

Hope you enjoyed it.
Talking about consistency:
UEFA Euro 2008:
Quarter-final -> Spain 0 - 0 Italy (120 mins)
Semi-final -> Spain 3 - 0 Russia
Final -> Spain 1 - 0 Germany
2010 FIFA World Cup:
Round 16 -> Spain 1 - 0 Portugal
Quarter-final -> Spain 1 - 0 Paraguay
Semi-final -> Spain 1 - 0 Germany
Final -> Spain 1 - 0 Netherlands (120 mins)
All I can say right now is... ¡¡¡CAMPEONES, CAMPEONES!!!

Spain has a dutch heritage, they wanted to be like that 1974 and 1978 football teams. Spanish footballers used to be dribblers, they still have those qualities, but they now prefer the one-touch-football, the linkup. That's the influence of Barcelona. The heart of the Spanish team is formed by Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta and Xavi.
The fact that they play now the way they play isn't just a question of talent, but also of education. When Johan Cruyff was coach of Barcelona, he didn't just let the first team play very offensively, but he reorganized the entire youth academy. Besides that Cruyff instigated a mentality change: the team came first, not the individual. That mentality has spread to the national team...
Now the irony is that there is just "one Holland"... Spain.

i was referring more to the mentality of dutch fans. the guy wrote that article is clearly happier with playing attractive football and losing than he is with winning the cup the way they played this year. i think that's the reason why the netherlands might never win. the fans, cruyff included, are only concerned with the way the game looks, not the final results. i think that's the reason they lost in 74 and 78 and potentially the reason they will continue to lose in the future.
as a fan, it kills me that no one is concerned with actually winning the cup. that's why i loved the mentality that van Marwijk brought this year. he made it all about winning, even if it was ugly. i'm afraid though, that since they didn't go all the way this year, all the pressure from the fans to play "beautiful football" will be too much and the federation might decide to bring another coach in.
i agree that they played a bit too rough this year, but i think that can easily be fixed. van bommel will retire soon and they can move sneijder to that spot. that, or they can change the formation all together and get some new (better) center backs. that way there will not be a need for 2 destructive midfielders.
