Can the Clippers Trade a 1st Round Pick?

Post#1 » by loflin3hree5ive » Sat Aug 28, 2010 9:22 pm

If so, what are the conditions in which they can?

2012 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City
The Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City (top 10 protected in the 2012 draft, top 10 protected in 2013, top 10 protected in 2014, top 10 protected in 2015 and unprotected in the 2016 Draft). In addition, if the Los Angeles Clippers are required to send their 2012 first round pick pursuant to the above and are also entitled to receive Minnesota’s own 2012 first round draft, then Oklahoma City shall receive the lesser of the Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round pick and Minnesota’s own 2012 first round pick. [L.A. Clippers -Oklahoma City, 6/24/2010]

Thank you to anyone who can help.

The 2012 pick they have coming from Minnesota is unprotected, right?

If so, they can trade their own 2011 pick without issue, because they will have at least one pick in 2012 no matter what.
They can trade a future pick, but the protections as listed above make it complicated.
From the above, it almost looks like they cannot trade the 2012 Minnesota pick because there's a chance OKC might get it under certain circumstances.

Minnesota owes the Clippers a first round pick that is top 10 protected in 2011, and unprotected in the 2012 Draft.

As long as the Clippers keep their own pick in 2011, it would seem to me that, based on the language provided, they could trade away the pick owed to them by Minnesota, with the understanding that should Minnesota convey that pick to them in 2012, then their new trading partner would receive the better of Minnesota's or their own 2012 pick, since the Clippers would owe OKC the lesser of the two picks.

You're right, that would seem to be a perfectly legal interpretation.

But you do make an important point; I see a lot of proposals on the trade board that involve the Clippers trading BOTH their 2011 pick and the Minnesota pick, and that, they cannot do. They must keep one of them because of the implications of the Bledsoe trade.
