Actually, forget that.
Here's a list of guys 6-10 or taller, in the past 20 years, who averaged 2 or more blocks per game, who managed to play at least 29 minutes per game despite a foul rate exceeding 4 fouls per 36 minutes:

OK
but I thought back during the great Haywood debates (during the EJ era)
that there were actually very few big men ie Centers, that played over
30 mpg.
I just worry that McGee seemed to have games where he might be
doing OK, esp offensively, but get into quick foul trouble.

30 minutes isn't really that much. You have to be REALLY foul prone to be unable to average 30. I agree that he might not get 30 minutes based on defensive accumen, but his foul rate doesn't worry me.
Last year, McGee averaged 4.6 fouls per 36 minutes. Let's assume he can get that down to about 4.3 fouls per 36. For comparison, I looked back a few wiry young shot blockers to assess their minutes played and their foul rate:
Tyson Chandler in his 4th and 5th seasons played 27 mpg and averaged 4.7 fouls per 36 minutes.
Brendan Haywood in his 4th season played 28 mpg and averaged 4.2 fouls per 36.
Marcus Camby in his 5th and 6th seasons played 34 mpg and averaged 3.9 fouls per 36.
Samuel Dalembert in his 4th season played 31 mpg and averaged 4.2 fouls per 36.
But this is McGees 3rd season. I personally doubt he plays 30 minutes a game. I expect more like 20-24 or 25 minutes a game.

I know you probably consider Hilton Armstrong and/or Kevin Seraphin as viable competition for McGee's minutes but I think most don't. At least not this year for Seraphin. McGee will get all the minutes he can possibly handle. It almost looks like EG specifically constructed the roster so McGee would have little to no competition for minutes this year. If McGee is only getting 20 minutes a night, then his season is an abject failure.

That seems like an odd why to measure his season in total. Besides, my range was 20-25 minutes. 20 was the low side and yeah, if he was at the low side then he wouldn't be producing as much as we would want. But the key would still be what progress is he showing and in what areas.
I think a lot of people expect more alley ops on offense. That's not really a stretch. Wall, Gil and Kirk will make that happen. You can pretty much bank on that. We know he will run. I also pretty sure he will do well with the pick and roll.
For him its all about can he defend a position. If not, he is only an AJ type.

Re: Javale McGee Thread
not too odd. mcgee playing limited minutes would be a failure because as 3rd year, team USA invite, playing 20mpg means that mcgee isn't able to keep an undersized foreign rookie on the bench.

It also means that foreign rookie plays good defence and rebounds well.

I was about to say good point in wholehearted agreement. And now that I reflect for
a moment, your 20 min number is a good barometer for that. He's GOT to play at least
that much. That said, Blatche can play there (C) with Yi (or others) at the 4.
Ultimately though, unless KS turns out to be much more NBA ready than
most reasonable people seem to predict now, we should HOPE that JM plays
until he drops from exhaustion. HA will be a regular whipping boy for many
posters if he has to play very often.

Well, in fairness, we took Mike Pence off their hands. Taking back Mahinmi is the least they can do.

if you take a case of beer, take it to the self-checkout, spin the beer at the handle so the barcode of the individual is showing through, and scan THAT code, you'll be charged the price of a 6pack instead of the full case. the things i learned in college...

Well all of my optimism for this season is gone:

"Hilton Armstrong's had a really solid camp. He's actually played better than JaVale McGee has through camp right now. We've got to get JaVale defensive rebounding right now. With him, we need more substance than style. He's always been a style guy, and we got to get some substance out of that position."

Misleading because that general trend is going to be true for every player in the nba. Of course when you cut to the basket and get the pass and dunk it it's a high percentage, low turnover shot! of course your points in transition are high percentage, low turnovers! Of course your shooting percentage off of isolation is lower! Gimme a break. It may be bigger for JaVale, sure, whatever.

My optimism has taken a huge hit as well, but only because of Flip Saunders.
Javale might not be what Flip wants him to be. Flip has consistently seen things the way I hoped he wouldn't.

CCJ: How do you think McGee should be used? How do you see that fitting into a winning team? Who do you suggest take on the roles that McGee would not be filling?

Basically, Flip lacks an internal filter when making comments to the media, whatever is in his head is what comes out of his mouth and usually it something surprisingly counter-productive (seriously, it could be a form of tourettes. I wish Flip would take a page out of Ernie's book when it comes to speaking about our players to the media.

Jeez CCJ, how long are you going to continue to absolve McGee for his shortcomings? He's the pits on defense and hasn't shown an iota of improvement.
I pray to god Saunders actually does the right thing and holds the kid accountable for his lack of effort, because if Javale earns the role of started by default, this team is going to be in a world of trouble.

Re: Javale McGee Thread
I'm just fine with these comments. McGee hasn't really matured at all throughout his time in the NBA. He still makes the same crappy mistakes that should be fairly correctable. He still tries to play like a guard when he's a friggin 7-footer. He hasn't developed any offensive post moves, etc.
If behind-the-scenes coaching and instruction hasn't done anything to resolve those issues, then maybe bringing it to the public will make an impact.
