There's one superteam. A couple of good teams, a couple of also-rans (were in this category IMO) and a couple of miserable teams. There's plenty of opportunity IMO for a team like the Wizards to surprise.
I want to second this. "The conference improved" is just about the most predictable offseason cliche. I mean, it is really possible for a group that includes 50% of the league to just magically improve by that much as a whole? We're just at the point in the summer where it's assumed all rookies will work out, all free agent signings will repeat their work from a season ago, all trades will pay dividends, no key pieces will get injured, etc. Well, many rookies will fail, and even those that don't won't be as good as hoped. A large percentage of new players will prove that the grass isn't always greener by mid-season. And so on.
I could see this season, the average win total for the non-playoff teams being a bit higher than last year, and the average win total for the bottom 4-5 playoff spots being a tad lower than last year. So, maybe a better way to describe the conference would be more competitive, rather than improved.
