I still sort of cringe when I think of that backcourt fit. It's got blackhole written all over it. I would probably do it though just for the fresh start.

Let Ellis be the scorer in the second unit, and play him at SG in the fourth quarter

unless JJ is starting and only playing about 5 minutes, that is not a good idea. You dont get a player of Ellis' ability and stow him on the bench.

+1
Ellis isn't coming off the bench
If anything, Nelson would come off the bench as the 6th man before Ellis would IMO

can he play pf?

regardless, I'm warming up to the idea of Monta Ellis. You get a 25 year old scorer from the perimeter. That's a move that could payoff in the long run or even this year depending on how quick he can adapt.

I don't think he can play the four.

Biedrins has almost zero offensive game, and would be awful next to Dwight.

He's a very capable center though...too good to be a backup.

Ellis plays a little bigger than 6'3. He's not a bad rebounder for his size, and his reputation as a chucker stems more from his early career in Nellie's ridiculous system than from recent history. His TS% isn't mindblowing, but it's not bad. He's still an explosive scorer and a guy who'll attack the hoop, which is what we need.

Also, Biedrins horrible contract is mitigated by the fact that Ellis' deal is significantly cheaper than someone of his ability should be on.

A wild card could also be Brandon Wright. His career has been stalled by injuries, but a lot of people were very high on him coming out of college. He's still only 23, and possesses the potential to be a good player in this league.

Well, paying 9mil for a backup isn't that crazy seeing we pay 20+mil a year to a PF that wouldn't know what a basket is if it would hit him in the head, which is unlikely to happen since he looks so much out of shape I don't think he can jump over his shoes ..

Okay, I'm sold. Otis better get this done by the time I wake up tomorrow.

To be honest, it's not like Vince had a reputation as a great defender coming into Orlando. With Dwight patrolling the paint, and with Ellis buying into our defensive system and sticking to his rotations, there's no reason why it would affect our D.

This is about the best you're going to get for that package. However, the inclusion of Biedrins is a deal-breaker, IMO. We can't absorb him for 3 more seasons @ 9M per after '10-'11. So, unless he's being spun to a third team, Otis should really be holding out for a better deal.

And wouldn't that make any Magic-related forum an absolute delight. The Meer hate would ramp up into overdrive.

Great post.

The only thing that makes me hesitant about this trade is Biedrins and his salary this year + 3 years/27M afterwards. But hey, if payroll doesn't matter...

big question is, what happens if meer doesnt pass him the ball, or stan doesnt run plays for him. i dont think carter has any trouble scoring, i think the system is not working 4 him.
