Well it's official, the Lakers have one more reason to beat the Blazers for the next year. :D Seriously this guy owns us.

I have a feeling Smith is going to make a lot of those side mid-range jump shots. He's gonna be like Kurt Thomas. Besides he has only 4 games under his belt with the Nets so he should be rested and ready to go.

He's a vet, 1st pick in the 95 draft, and he can provide leadership. I'd take a big over a guard any day. Even if that means a 35 year old C/PF. He's still a solid backup to either Gasol or Bynum. Not to mention he comes cheap too.

Woulda been nice a couple of months ago. Now that Drew's back, he won't sniff the rotation.

At least until the next knee-cident.

Some of you all are really, really dense.

Anyone who has ANY problem with this trade should leave this board.

This was a business move (saving lots of money) with an underlying practical application in that Joe Smith fills a critical NEED.

Great trade!!!! I can't believe how uninformed and ignorant some of my fellow Laker fans are. If you give up Vujachick and a 1st, you expect nothing but cap relief. In this case we got cap relief and a guy who fills a need ... absolutely great trade!!!

On another note, Caracter will eat up the D-League for the rest of the season.

I have no problem with the trade...

At first I miss-read it and thought it was for Josh Smith and thought we pulled off another Gasol... After that, everything was a let down...

But all in all, I see it like this...

We loose one guy who was likely not going to play pretty much at all, for a guy that probably won't play a whole lot, but fills a gap in the rotation...

Plus we saved some money and got the trade exception... So all in all, a pretty sound deal for us.

Frankly, I'm glad the FO learned it's lesson from the Kobe/Shaq years about finding creative ways to free up money... It sucked knowing that no matter what happened, we couldn't afford to bring any real talent in to freshen up our rotations.

I dunno Laker Fam. I like this trade more than I do not like it. I hope that makes sense.

Lakers save money and loose Sasha to full fill a need. A big that can we can now use rest pau and odom with.

For those of you complaining about the first round pick, when was the last time a very late first rounder alone got us or any other team a franchise changing player. Not very many times if at all.

I do agree loosing the first rounder hurt me as fan. But sometimes its difficult to see the bigger picture. Mitch gets paid the big bucks to see things that you nor I anticpate coming.

Mitch has built a winner. The last time I checked, you need a minimum of veterans who know the game, a deep bench, and defense to make it to the promise land. Thats what the Laker org has done with this trade, built a winner.

He made a great post though. Anyone who believed Sasha was our way of dumping Luke was pipe dreamin. Sasha's contract was our way of dumping Sasha lol.

How long can we keep that TE?

And as magic1 said... once a Laker, always a Laker.

One year, I think.

And I was wrong, you can't combine a TE with another player's contract, so this could only be used to get a contract of equal or lesser value :(

This is an epic steal of a deal for the Lakers. Here is the breakdown.

Joe Smith (read Bynum insurance) >> Sasha
Around $9 million >>>>>> the last pick in the first round of next year's weak draft

If you really lament the pick so much LA could use $3 milion of that money (plus a future 2nd) and buy a better first on draft day next year and still have $6 million.

This is just another great trade by Mitch, this is way more than we should have ever hoped for out of that pick.

Wow... Lakers also got two second rounders from the nets, Warriors 2011 & Bulls 2012 and the draft rights to a Sergei Lishchuk from the Rockets.

I have a question,

Is Joe Smith an upgrade from Theo Ratliff? Who will get the "extra minutes" now that Bynum is back? Are any of both going to play at all assuming Lakers are healthy?

Also, I just realized we gave up a protected 1-18 1st round pick. How is that such a great deal?

Pau Gasol 30
Artest 31
Odom 31
Kobe 32
Derek Fisher 36

At some point we´re going to need to rebuild our team....
