Philly acquires Timonen and Hartnell

Post#1 » by Swift21 » Mon Jun 18, 2007 10:15 pm

Hartnell, who was scheduled to become a free agent on July 1, signed with Flyers on a 6-year, $25.2 million deal for a cap hit of $4.2 million per year.

The Flyers also agreed to terms with Timonen on a 6-year, $37.8 million contract for an annual cap hit of $6.3 million.

God damn, Timonen for 6 years 38 million, wow. I know they needed a defenseman to anchor their blueline but wow, that's too much for Timonen.

Too much, but can you blame the Flyers for overpaying? This is a franchise that never loses and just came off a season in which they were the worst team in the league, they needed to overpay because they won't improve with the guys they got now.

well essentially they got Hartnell, Timmonen, Upshall, and Parent for Forsberg. That's pretty damn good.

Not to mention the fact they have a ton of cap space to spare and the #2 overall pick

Agreed. They did overpay, but they went out and got their guys, so you really cant fault em for that

Thy didn't really overpay considering the trade and how the market will be now that they've made these deals. But they basically have set the bar for this offseason and if this is how its going to be I'd rather my team sit with what they have because overpaying for guys that wont make or break a season is ludacris.

Hartnell definitely got overpayed. I expect Vanek to get 5-6 million now and Chris Drury to get 6-7.

Kipper gets 3.5 and Iggy gets 7. Iggy is more of a known name way better player and the intangibles. They did overpay.

Exactly. Scott Hartnell's best season, didn't even break the 50 point mark. Ryan Malone, at 1.6 million a year is a bargain and he has the same type of playing style as Hartnell and puts up the same amount of points.. Now players like this are going to demand this kind of money. Imagine what Thomas Vanek will/should get now because of the Hartnell signing. Philly screwed the free agent market now because of the signings of these 2 guys. The salary cap was suppose to deter stuff from this like happening. No way these 2 deserved this kind of money. Dumb move.

Yep and I hate to imagine what Scott Hannan, Brian Rafalski and Sheldon Souray will get now.

Yep. And the signing last season of Segei Gonchar for 5 million a year is now a steal. I hated the signing last season and this past season, but now, not anymore.

I was hoping the Pens would make a move for him, but not anymore. Not worth what he'll get.

#1/#2 defenseman are making 5+ mil a year now. Don't blame Philly for spending that much on Timonen, talk to the Habs. They set the bar this offseason when they gave Markov his contract. To be honest, I'd take Timonen over Markov anyways. Kimo Timonen isn't an average defenseman, he's actually quite underrated...mainly because he's in Nashville and doesn't recieve the recognition that players like McCabe, Kaberle, Souray, Markov, Redden and Chara recieve. They overpaid by approximately $700,000- $900,000 per for him. So what? They had the money to spend, and needed a top notch defenseman, so they went out and signed one.

I also wanted my Sharks to re-sign Hannan, but now watching the Flyers screw the market up for Defensemen it's not a chance in hell we can bring him back.

The only concern I have with Timonens contract is the length, it's quite long considering his age.

Im liking what the Flyers are doing, now all they have to is sign Gomez or Briere and Draft Turris and they're future will look scary.
