No idea why you think that notion is funny. Teams that make deep playoff runs tend to have well-stocked frontcourts and win more battles inside than they lose.
No one is saying Asik is Bill Russell, but he makes it extremely difficult for the other team to score near the basket (when the refs don't call fouls on him for kicks). He also defends the PnR well. He's a smart player, particularly on defense, and improving. That's friggin important in the playoffs, and it's not something you give up without a lot of apprehension.
We will possibly have to face an equally deep, and very experienced, Boston frontcourt - unless we luck out and they stay perpetually injured until the summer, we'll need to exploit Miami's tissue-soft frontcourt as a serious matchup advantage (along with the Unicorn demolishing their PG of course), and/or we'll need to contain Dwight Howard.
I'd like to have Omer and Taj on my side for those battles, and much as I'd like to add Lee, I really don't want to give either of them up to get him. An hour before the deadline, if nothing has happened yet, I might be willing to do it because we do need a SG. Now, I'm still holding out that they'll take the picks.
I don't want to give Asik away. Not for any of those players. But Taj is very, very, very expendable and easy to replace. I don't see what is the big deal with this guy. Our second unit isn't going to score 5 points on anyone serious in the playoffs and don't think we are going to keep those guys from scoring. Just imagine the second round matchup vs Miami. They are going to have Wade or James(even Bosh) on the court every second of the game.
You think our second unit are going to outscore them? Keep the game in balance? Without a single player who can create his own shot?
Look, we can easily keep that froont court depth. We would still have: Noah, Boozer, Asik, KT and Deng to rotate. And the option is to add another big body, this can be done without a problem but the Bulls FO is in love with Taj Gibson it seems.
Get a starting SG. And then get another big man to make the rotation bigger. We lose nothing, but gain much.
