Ted's latest blog was rather vague about the logo.

I actually think that might be our new logo. It doesn't make sense to change the logo before you change the team name. But maybe they go with a logo that represents DC more than it represents the team name, sort of like what the Nationals did with the W.

I think Ted's pretty much on record as saying that the team name won't be changed for 2012-13 - and, that it's a relatively low priority decision for the franchise going forward:

We haven’t changed the name. We haven’t made a decision. We haven’t done any work on it. It is “under consideration” because of the volume of emails that argue both sides of the debate. [/b]
But this is not a decision that I need to focus on. As noted we have many items completed in our To Do list; many items in progress; and a few items that we are considering due to the volume of email and suggestions. My issue is thus: There is now very little discussion on what we have done or this season. The focus is on what we have noted as input from our fans. Hence it is “under consideration.” The Post talks about it all of the time. I don’t. [b]In fact, I don’t think much about it as I have my hands full with the seasons starting for the Caps and the Wizards.

Maybe Ted is trying to spin everyone while secretly preparing for a relaunch of the Bullets brand in 2013. But I'm not holding my breath - especially when he's already investing in a relaunch of the Wizards brand (new colors, new uniforms, recolored logo at a minimum, possible new secondary logos, etc.) in 2012. Why spend the money to change the colors the unis, only to relaunch the entire brand a year later?

I don't buy that for a minute. Of course it was a mistake: it was a mistake to publish the recolored version ahead of time.

We'll see whether this ends up being the final version or not. But it's too early to call this a false alarm.

I think the Wizards might be going for the first 3D logo in professional sports with this one. I'm all for red, white, and blue, but the combination on our current logo looks terrible. It actually looks like one of those 3D images with the red and blue. Innovative haha.

It reminds me of those colouring competitions in schools, or a kids colouring in book etc. You know what im talking about. Where the kid, his mind still free from social constraints and norms that are drilled into us as we age, can let his imagination run wild and choose the brightest and happiest colours and does with them whatever he chooses. And he colours in the rabbit bright green, the grass is purple and the sun is blue with pink rays shining down.

Thats what that logo looks like. If you gave a stack of blank Wizards logos out to a local pre-school class, i bet at least one of them would come back with that exact colour scheme. And it would be the worst looking one of them all.

To start let us NOT have a contest or a debate on the Wizards name. Like that hasn’t been done before. See this article. Let us then have another Washington Post editorial on whether we should change the name next! Yikes. The cycle continues.

And in regards to the logo, all I can say to add more value is thus:

The Capitals rebrand was successful. We changed our colors to red, white and blue. Some bloggers went crazy early on generating pixels with opinions before they ever saw the new jerseys or designs or new design treatments. The jerseys were called “an eyesore”; a “colostomy bag”; and “who designed that? a 6 year old with learning disabilities?” to name a few comments I remember.

Today the Caps red home jerseys are considered among the strongest look and feel in the NHL and have also become best sellers.

I would expect the same for the Wizards new look and feel. I like them and there has been an incredible amount of work done on the overall look and feel and design.

I hope I have built a modicum of trust that we can do good work and that the actual redesign and new jerseys and look and feel will be of great comfort to you all. I am hopeful.

But if we showed you today it would take all of the fun out of the process. And it wouldn’t fit with our timing and plan. So feed that monster and generate the click streams. Make fun and comment and then just stay tuned to what we actually do unveil. Thank you.

If that was the recolored version of the new logo, I'd be surprised. A 2nd grader could do that in MS Paint in 3 minutes. Not what I would expect from Leonsis.

Hey guys. im a graphic designer in dc, currently doing work for ted. some of my colleagues were asked to make "mock up" logos for the washington city paper. two of the designers are close friends. what do u guys think? note: most of the logos were not made by designers who specialize in sports brandy/identify so the idea was to gather a wide range of styles of all audiences.

i love the first one as well,

2nd - wtf? a ticket with a wizards hat? lol

3rd - looks too much like the clippers or sixers

4th- orange, meh

5th- too boring

ha ya the ticket is odd to say the least... only the first designer has experience in sports branding. the rest are just random designers that were asked to make something for the paper

Meh. Who cares? I just am hoping, praying for a decent BASKETBALL product sometime in the not too distant future. They can come out wearing knee-high argyle socks and hot pink unis for all I care... as long as the names on the back of the jerseys are something like: D. Howard, Wall, Sullinger, Singleton etc.

The third is more bball related, so I like it the best... Another font would suit it better though...
