Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
This s#it kills me.
Every single year people talk about BPA but every single f%ckin' year GMs go for the sexy potential pick. This year is no different. Jonas, Vesely, Biyombo, Knight - they all have potential to become great players but they don't produce right now.
When we're talking about BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE, that should mean someone that you know will produce the best. Not what might become. Guys like Walker who have proven they can produce already drop like a rock but Biyombo shoots up the chart because he MAY, just may become the next Serge Ibaka (who will get you perhaps 12-10-2 best case). But they forget the other 30 picks in similar situations that went absolutely nowhere (Sene, Diop, etc.) This is why most GMs are not good at drafting. This is also (partly) why BC should've been fired a long time ago.
You can't come out of the draft with just a risk pick that you don't know when will come over, will need another 5 years to develop (if he does) when the Raptors is just devoid of any actual talent. I would've been fine if we have gotten Walker (or even Knight ffs) along with Jonas. But JV alone just doesn't cut it no matter what BC is trying to sell.

Even if Chandler did bulk up, it hasn't enabled him to do anything more than what he has been doing since his rookie year, like being a viable post scorer. He's just better at what he has always been doing, but I attribute that more to experience than bulking up.

yeah..that's one of my concerns too. It happens to a lot of big men who try to go for the home run and block every shot (or always find themselves trying to recover for their own/teammate's mistakes). Even good shot blockers get into foul trouble often. I hope he goes for more fundamental help D (as he has the length to be effective doing so, whereas Amir doesn't as much), where he alters shots, but doesn't always go for the block and only makes athletic plays based on calculated decision making.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY????????????????????????!
jordan is the worst drafter ever. Kwame , adam morrison and henderson..
Why do people act like Jordan was/is the GM here? It's Rich Cho and he happens to be a guy that many people here wanted to replace BC, and right now I'm really hoping that happened.

Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
One thing that troubles me is that the last 2 years, B.C picked Derozan and Ed Davis and the overwhelming majority of fans supported the deal.
The type of negative discourse that Val has generated is equal to the Bargnani and CV selection from what I recall. I wanted Gay and Granger (as well as the majority of the board) in those drafts, respectfully (which would have been great picks).

Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
I rarely post here anymore, and the uneducated misled fans that base their opinions on stereotypes and assumptions is 100% why.
Jonas V should have gone to Cleveland at 4 - he was projected to be the 3rd or 4th best player in the draft. Considering we pick 5th, you'd expect fans to be excited to grab the 4th best player in the draft, right?
Of course not. Boo hoo, I want hype, I want hype draft Kemba draft Knight that's all I know who else is in this draft?
Bismack had too many question marks. NO OFFENSE whatsoever. We're talking Ben Wallace minus 2 points. Sure he'd be good on defense, if not great down the road, but why not leave that spot open for a Center who can fill it up on both ends of the floor?
Jonas has incredibly quick feet which he uses to his advantage on both ends - offense and defense. He's an excellent help defender that knows how to switch (hmm, opposite of who?) and pick up the driving opponent. He's got a nice wingspan and blocks shots (even jumpshots) with the best. He's 19, and yes, he's 240 pounds, but he's BIG. BIG.
You'll all be so sorry when you turn your back on the Raptors and come to see that we drafted possibly the best Center in this draft. A 19 year old who was compared to Arvydas by none other than ARVYDAS HIMSELF??
I'll go back into hiding now, because I really don't want to see what you idiots will have to say in return. In fact, I already know what you'll say.
ARVYDAS WAS SOFT TOO!!!

Being 19 doesnt excuse being so thin and weak. Biyombo is young too but much more muscular and strong, so is Kanter. If he didnt put the time in in the weight room already why do you assume he will? And maybe he just can't gain weight, look at Bosh, Amir, Tyson Chandler etc. They never got stronger or bigger...
Chandler has gotten a lot bigger. Maybe those guys haven't bulked up but pretty much every other successful big man has put on weight- i mean NORMALLY men put weight into frames in their early twenties. I mean if you don't believe guys will bulk up then Ed Davis is pretty much a lost cause as well.

I think it's helped him become better defensively because he can hold his ground, and helped offset his legs being not quite as sprightly. One guy that bulking up helped tremendously is Andrew Bogut (not that I think Val is like Bogut). I haven't seen enough of Jonas to know whether he can be a Kanter-like post presence (I wanted Kanter the most), but I think that's a different question.

Re: The Jonas Valanciunas Thread
Hahahaahahaha, Arvydas Sabonis?!?!? No, JV can't even wipe Sabonis' ass. Arvydas was already dominating when he was 19 - probably the best C in the world at the time. Even BC said he sees JV as a young Ilgauskas at best.

What does JV do that Amir and Ed have not shown that they can't do?.
I don't know..play center?
Play center, sure. Are we thinking he'll use his skinny frame to defend C's better then Amir or Barg's? He is a rebounding front court play and as far as I have read, that is what his role in the NBA will be. That being said, that also is the role that Amir currently plays. And Ed (the guy that we all were talking about his developing "feel around the basket" at the end of last year?) was starting to show some ability to catch it in the post and create with his soft hands and quick footwork. His PT is going to come down because of this. Unless of course we trade Bargs. Most of the people who really like the pick also see it as a Bargs out the door move. We'll see though.
Don't hate the pick. The Raps next season, whenever that is, could have one of the most exciting, youthful, and deep front courts in the NBA. Just thought a guard pick would have been better served. Especially one that could keep his man in front of him and hit a three pointer.
