Michael Pineda Traded for Jesus Montero

Post#1 » by moocow007 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 2:52 am

Yankees and M's completed a deal that will send Michael Pineda and 19 year old starting pitching prospect Jose Campos to pinstripes in exchange for Jesus Montero and 25 year old relief pitching prospect Hector Noesi.

The Yankees on Friday night shook up the baseball world by agreeing to send top prospect Jesus Montero to the Mariners in a four-player trade that brings 22-year-old stud pitcher Michael Pineda to the Bronx, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The Yankees also picked up 19-year-old pitcher Jose Campos from Seattle and sent righthander Hector Noesi to the Mariners. Both the trade and signing are pending physicals for all the players involved.

Pineda went 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA for the Mariners last season. He is seen as a young top-of-the-rotation starter the Yankees have lacked behind CC Sabathia.

Montero, 21, was among the top hitting prospects in baseball but was a raw talent as a catcher. The Yankees had planned to use him as a designated hitter this season; they now might look to sign a veteran hitter to round out their roster.

As a Mariners fan, I love the trade. We have a handful of really good starters in the minors and we needed a bat.

I think it's a good deal for both teams. Yankees have a lot of good catching prospects in the minors and the M's have a lot of good starters in the minors. Yankees desperately needed a #2 and the Mariners needed a middle of the order bat. I think Montero is a more sure thing because he's always going to be a very good hitter, but the Yankees couldn't afford to keep him at DH with Jeter and A-Rod. Yankees get a young stud starter to go with CC.

Good trade all around IMO.

Yeah you guys will love Montero. It's really not just the power potential but you'll be amazed at just how fast and how hard to ball jumps off his bat. On numerous occasions last season infielders had problems fielding ground balls Montero hit...and we're talking right to them...laser beams. Haven't seen the ball jump off a young players bat that hard since Daryl Strawberry.

I like the trade more for the Yankees. A lot of people like to forget that Montero had a .814 OPS in 463 PA without the prettiest K/BB ratios in Triple-A this year and just focus on the 69 PA he had in the bigs. Pineda has ace like stuff, he just needs to get a third pitch. That being said, IF Montero can somehow play catcher I definitely see it from the Mariners perspective and Montero is also one year further away from free agency. The 2012 Yankees got a whole lot better yesterday that is for sure.

Why couldn't he play first base?
