I'm sure there is much more to him than that, but I really dont get any glimpses that he has what it takes to be a star centre.
Well for one, "hype" is a bit of a strong word. Right now I believe that by lottery day Leonard will be ranked as close to Davis and Drummond than the players below him, like the Horford of this draft. At the moment though all I'm saying is to consider him in the same group as Lamb, MKG, Barnes, etc., a group of good prospects but not incredible ones. People are treating Leonard like he's Tyler Zeller
Leonard's athleticism is quite good. He's not Drummond but for a 7 foot+ guy with strength, the guy moves well and can get up above the rim. He's about as athletic as Anthony Davis with more muscle at the moment
For me it's pretty simple, the guy is 7'0-7'1, athletic and has great hands/is showing the beginnings of a back with his back to the basket and from outside - and he blocks shots. That's a rare combination. Normally guys like Leonard get taken high for their physical tools, BEFORE they show anything offensively. Leonard is actually showing offensively. He can play with his back to the basket, has nice touch from 7 feet and in, and is hitting some outside shots. To me big men with Leonard's size, athleticism and skill should go top 5 in just about every draft. They're just too rare
I'm a bit different from a lot of people in that I don't care how good a player is in college. I think it can lead to massive mistakes. People lost their crap over Kemba Walker last year because he was a good college player. I didn't care whatsoever. He was a score first, low efficiency 5'10 PG. You don't spend top 5 draft picks on an asset that crappy. Likewise, Derrick Favors and Greg Monroe in their freshman years were just about the same scorer in ppg and %. But Monroe vs Favors in offensive talent has always been a ridiculous comparison if anyone made it. Monroe could simply do far more things.
Likewise Anthony Davis and Meyers Leonard are putting up very similar scoring numbers despite Leonard being in his soph year. From an NBA skills perspective I think Leonard is leagues above him. Davis is Tyson Chandler/Noah offensively right now. He's a clean up guy. Leonard is actually posting up, hitting hook shots all over the paint, is showing outside potential, etc. He's not a finished product but this guy has 18ppg+ potential to me. I believe Davis in general is overrated. I don't think people will be losing their crap over him if he doesn't get past 13 points a game in the NBA. At least not any more than people lose their crap over Andrew Bogut and Tyson Chandler and Marcus Camby. I think Davis is a C long term on that note too.
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change
