Which Teams Still Have Amnesty Available?

Post#1 » by Monky15 » Sun Apr 1, 2012 4:17 am

Is there a list of which teams still have the option to amnesty a player?

Orlando Magic - Gilbert Arenas
New York Knicks - Chauncey Billups
Indiana Pacers - James Posey
Cleveland Cavaliers - Baron Davis
Golden State Warriors - Charlie Bell
Portland Trail Blazers - Brandon Roy
New Jersey Nets - Travis Outlaw

So, all the others.

Okay, let's try to put together of all eligible amnesty candidates:

Atlanta Hawks
Johnson, Horford, Smith, Williams, Pachulia, Teague, Smith

Boston Celtics
Pierce, Rondo, Bradley

Charlotte Bobcats
Thomas, Diop, Maggette, Henderson

First likely candidate, Tyrus Thomas.

Chicago Bulls
Gibson, Watson, Brewer, Korver, Noah, Boozer, Deng

Dallas Mavericks
Dirk, Marion, Haywood, Beaubois, Jones

One of Marion or Haywood may be candidates if they want to play in free-agency this off-season.

Denver Nuggets
Lawson, Harrington, Andersen

Harrington seems to be a strong candidate.

Detroit Pistons
Daye, Monroe, Gordon, Villanueva, Maxiell

Time to get rid of Villanueva?

Houston Rockets
Lowry, Martin, Budinger, Patterson, Scola (you could actually play this 5)

Clippers
Williams, Griffin, Bledsoe, Gomes

Lakers
Bryant, Bynum Gasol, Artest, Blake

Memphis Grizzlies
Z-Bo, Gay, Conley, Allen, Pondexter

Miami Heat
LBJ, Wade, Bosh, Miller, Haslem, Chalmers, Anthony

Milwaukee Bucks
Jennings, Udrih, Livingston, Sanders, Brockman, LRMAM

Minnesota Timberwolves
Rubio, Darko, Webster, Pekovic, Johnson, Ridnour, Ellington

New Orleans Hornets
Okafor, Ariza, Jack, Bellineli

OKC Thunder
Durant, Harden, Perkins, Sefolosha, Collison, Aldrich, Ibaka

Philadelphia 76ers
Brand, Iggy, Williams, Turner, Holiday

Phoenix Suns
Gortat, Chilress, Dudley, Frye, Warrick

Not sure why Childress wasn't amnestied this past Summer already.

Sacramento Kings
Cousins, Evans, Salmons, Garcia, Whiteside

Salmons should go.

San Antonio Spurs
Manu, Parker, Blair, Splitter, Bonner, Neal

Toronto Raptors
Calderon, Bargnani, Johnson, Kleiza, Rozan, Davis, Johnson, Alabi

Obviously they'll never amnesty Bargnani.

Utah Jazz
Jefferson, Millsap, Harris, Bell, Hayward, Favors.

Washington Wizards
Blatche, Wall, Lewis, Booker, Seraphin, Crawford

They should amnesty Blatche. Time to move on. They probably won't.

---------

A couple of names may be missing of this list, but I don't think I forgot anyone who's a plausible amnesty candidate (a contract large and/or long enough).

So, Tyrus Thomas, Al Harrington, Childress, Villanueva seem to be the likely candidates next season. Then a few outside ones - Kleiza, Blatche, Scola. Then it depends on how the Deron Williams situation plays out.

Funny how last Summer it was a bunch of guards + a combo forward and this summer the main candidates seem to be combo forwards.

It will be interesting to see if any of the teams that still have the provision available to them use it in a way that Cleveland did last year, when they took Baron Davis from the Clippers for an unprotected first then using their amnesty on him to free up cap space.

Maybe the Lakers could buy a lottery pick by taking on a bad contract. Ben Gordon and the Pistons pick for LA's TPE and Steve Blake. Gordon gets amnestied and the lotto pick takes Blakes salary slot. Pistons are then free to Amnesty Villanueva and are suddenly in a far healthier cap position.

It didnt really happen like that, and it wont happen like that in the future either. When Cleveland traded for BD, there was no amnesty rule. (Ultimately the rule itself ended way different than anyone would have guessed.)

More importantly, the rule says you can only amnesty a player who was on your roster when the new CBA was signed. No one can trade for a player with the opportunity to use their amnesty on him.

There is no benefit to amnesty a player unless the team is either trying to avoid the luxury tax, get cap room to sign another player, or free up a roster spot. Since none of these applied to Phoenix last December, there was no reason for them to amnesty anyone.

Elton Brand is a likely candidate if the Sixers identify someone they want in free agency.
