Brett Lawrie

Post#1 » by Ruben Douglas » Mon Apr 2, 2012 7:56 pm

Just curious to see what all of your take is on the Brewers trading Lawrie for Marcum last season. Obviously, Marcum did very well last season and was a big reason the Brewers made the playoffs. However, Lawrie looks to be the real deal and could have been the Brewers 3B for the next 10 years. Looking back, is it a trade you still would have made?

yes.
1 game from being in the World Series
wouldnt change that for Lawries 10 yrs

wev traded alot of young prospects to acquire win now type players
if 1 of them (lawrie) turns out great and the others just avg
then they were all good moves

Technically 2 games from the World Series but who's counting :). I hear ya. Your argument makes total sense if you are looking for that "win now" and why not?

I just look at it from the opposing side and think that I'd rather see Marcum a few times a year instead of a lineup with Lawrie and Braun in it for years to come. But again, it's hard to argue Marcum's success in the regular season with the Brewers. He was arguably your best pitcher last season.

I think what makes or breaks this deal is whether or not Brewers can re-sign Marcum.

no. i disagree
Lawrie, would not have helped us last season or this coming season
not as much as Marcum did, and is projected to

No Marcum = No playoffs

Tough to argue your logic. But you can also look at it like this. Marcum's WAR was 3.3. How accurate those stats always are can be up for debate. But pretend it is accurate. The Brewers still make the playoffs and maybe his replacement doesn't suck in the playoffs?

I absolutely hate threads like this - were conversations that have been had on this board multiple times are rehashed again and again. Then again, RD isn't a Brewers fan so it's not like he's here to see that.

Pitcher that throws 85 and struggles against good offenses will not age well or be a major piece when it counts. He could be downright awful soon.

Or he could be a Maddux. Might be a stretch though...

Wasn't coming on to piss you off. Just get an opinion. I figured it was relevant discussion with the expectations of Lawrie being so high and the Brewers being the defending NL Central Champions and possible favorites to win again. Instead of hating you can always just ignore. Apologies.

Don't forget his destructive mechanics. I'm not going to argue about it because there are no real stats to back up a statement about how a player's delivery could affect his future performance. But Marcum and K-Rod both have violent deliveries and weak fastballs. I could see them both falling off drastically any time now.

I know you weren't coming to piss me off, man. I'm not blaming you, I'm just saying that we've had this discussion multiple times, in multiple threads, since the deal was made. We had it again, all over again, once the offseason commenced, in multiple forms in multiple threads. Relevancy has nothing to do with my critique, it's simply repetition.

But, as I said, it's not like I'm mad at you. You're not here to see that. I was just voicing my personal annoyance. It would be like if I went to the Cubs board and started a thread which said "What do you guys think about picking up Theo Epstein? Do you think that's a good move?" That is all.

Anyways, I'm done. I hope you get the opinions you're seeking.

You should link me up to one of those threads. Would be more than happy to just read that. But cheers.

From the Jays perspective (and Jays fans), it was kind of mixed when the deal went down. Lawrie had attitude concerns and not really eye popping numbers in the minors before he got traded. Marcum was a fan favorite and our opening day starter.

However, Lawrie exploded onto the major league scene and the fans love/loved him. He plays with intensity that I've never seen before, and it also helps that he's Canadian. I think the deal worked out for both teams in the direction they were headed. Brewers were close to the world series and look like another playoff team, while the Jays continue building.

Check out his reaction after this home run;

I would easily take back the trade today if I could.

Return to Milwaukee Brewers
