"Starter criteria"

Post#1 » by Three34 » Fri May 18, 2012 2:37 pm

Two questions here:

1) Do the new "starter criteria" rules actually apply to the 2011/12 season? I have seen a few places say that they don't, not least of which is this page 6 of this player's association memo. As I see it, however, the CBA itself says no such thing. Article XI Section 1(5)(ii) handles the starter criteria rule, but nowhere does it say it does not apply 2011-12; additionally, as best as I can ascertain, nowhere in the rest of section 1, or even Article XI, says so either.

2) If "yes" to question 1, are the threshold amounts prorated for the shortened 66 game season? Thinking specifically of Courtney Lee and Alonzo Gee as players for whom, if their minutes played totals for 2011/12 were prorated over an 82 game season, would have made it over the 2,000 minute threshold whereas they otherwise haven't.

1 The memo references QOs, and any QO for 11-12 season is past tense. You're mixing up applicable seasons.

2 Whether the starter criteria are prorated, I don't see where that's stated. But I'd wager the league will do it that way ....would be hard to argue otherwise.

Heh, unless I'm doing it wrong, this leads to an odd incidence.

Michael Beasley started 73 games last year, and 7 this year. 7 starts in a 66 game season = 8.7 starts in an 82 game season = rounded up to 9 = 82 starts over the last two seasons = average of 41 starts over the last two = qualifies for starter criteria. But had he only started 6 times in the 66 game season, he'd've only averaged 40 starts and not met the criteria. This his $8,172,363 qualifying offer would have been only $4,001,917 had he started one less game.

Whoops.

I'm guessing you did it wrong by rounding. He would need 82 starts (or the prorated equivalent thereof) OR MORE, and he only has the prorated equivalent of 81.7.

It looks to me like he falls short of the 82-start threshold. Close, but no cigar.

My understanding was that all prorated benchmarks for the 2011/12 season were to be rounded to the nearest whole number. The fact that I can't find where I remember seeing that suggests it might not be true.

My info shows that his QO is $8,172,363. I don't know what the rationale for that number is, just the number. I'm sure that Sham will attest to the usual accuracy of any numbers I put up on this board.

That's what I have, too. Which, if right, means he must have met the criteria.
