they need a proper wage scale

Post#1 » by Devilzsidewalk » Tue Jun 5, 2012 8:52 am

Prior, Strasburg, now Appel - all these guys put the fear of God into the team picking #1 worrying about being able to sign them. The NBA and NFL seemed to have figured it out, but MLB as usual is still lagging behind in creating a competitive league. Its not that the Stros didn't potentially get a great player, maybe an all star, but I doubt they pass on Appel if there's a proper rookie scale.

WTF are you talking about? Appel wasn't even the consensus BPA, on average "experts" rated Buxton higher. Comparing Appel to Strasburg and Prior aka the best pitching draft prospects ever is beyond silly. And if anything the Astros benefited from the system yesterday.

Didn't they just instate a salary cap for the top 10 rounds?

i dont know if you can compare pitchers to position players when talking bpa amongst top 5 draftees, but regardless the point is Appel wouldn't have dropped if it weren't for Boras' negotiating power. The Astros have a decent overall staff, but they could definitely use a top of the rotation improvement and aside from Giolito who's too risky, Appel would have been the most sensible pick

Terrible excuse with the you can't compare a position player with a pitcher. That is what people are paid to do, and on average experts rated Buxton higher than Appel. Sickels and Goldstein had Correa as the BPA, Law had Correa #2 behind Buxton. There wasn't a consensus, hell Appel wasn't even the consensus best college pitcher. I think Correa was the BPA, a SS with power is an incredible player to have. Appel has great stuff, but McCullers who the Astros later drafted has a better pure arm than Appel and it's not like Appel put up silly numbers in college like Strasburg and Prior. And lawl at drafting for need. Then saying it's too risky to draft Giolito, but not acknowledging that pitchers are far more risky than hitters.
