Stat is never going to be Ben Wallace but he if he give 2 bpg and display more effort and energy on D, I'll be happy. Remember how he defended Dirk in that one game? Stat is capable. He just hates playing d. Woodson needs to punish him and cut his minutes if he lacks effort.
Not an excuse but I think Stat plays better d when he's happy on o. Woodson must get him 15+ shots.

Re: Amare will have his best defensive season next year
Ever since his back troubles, Stat has had maybe a dozen games where he moved well. He actually looked good briefly when he came back from his rest period at the end of the season, but it was fleeting. The point is even if he does commit to playing D the two obstacles to him doing it well is his lack of understanding how to play team defense and his physical condition.
He looked wooden almost all season long and if his back is bad, his upper body is going to remain disconnected to his lower body and he won't have the coordination and reaction to move his feet on D and react well with his hands and arms. Being able to dunk the ball sometimes is not a good test of his fitness, moving and defending well on defense is.
He looked robotic and afraid of contact, not something new perhaps, but worse than ever. So we'll see where he's at. His mindset is one thing, but if his back is wack, he'll remain a big liability on defense.

EDIT: Before I get killed for "hating" on Stat I just want to qualify that he's still my favorite player on the team...
This isn't hating. It's an observation...
I watched him play a bit smarter under Woody at first but nothing seems to stick. I'll believe he's a good rotater when I see it...

This is like that thread...who is scared of the stacked Sacramento Kings...nobody, lol...
The good coaches...they salivate at the opportunity to attack Amare...easy buckets...you can probably rely on an entire gameplan designed to exploit him...

Re: Amare will have his best defensive season next year
Amare's problem on defense is his weight center is too high and he lacks the positioning instincts. He needs to be instructed closely what to do in which situation by the coaches.
Under Gentry, he finally started to box out on rebounding, instead of just jumping to the rebound as he used to. But he is unable to also figure out the proper timing to separate from the guy he fended off to actually get the rebound. This resulted in his rebounding number decrease a bit over the last 3 years. On the Knicks team, we see a lot of times particularly Fields snatch the rebound away from Amare because the latter is slow at grabbing it himself after boxing out.
As to PnR defense, he just cannot properly calibrate his rotations and often mechanically over steps on cutoffs of the ball handler. He is willing to follow the instructions on defense which Woody and Gentry would be willing to provide while MDA didn't care to do. He will do better, maybe adequate enough for the team. But he'll never be like KG or Tyson.

You don't see him bending his knees and ever getting into a defensive crouch when facing his man. He just stands there straight up like a dodo. It leaves him unprepared to make good lateral adjustments with his feet so close to each other. Guys just blow by him when his basic defensive movement is all upstairs. That is when he is even really trying. He is directly descended from an almost extinct bloodline of the human species called Amarus Erectus.

Mike Breen said the same thing at the end of game 4. That last position for Miami Amare got in a defensive stance and stayed infront of Wade. Wade did get to the paint (like he will against any big but Amare stayed with him and Wade lost his handle.
Breen said amare got in a good defensive stance cuz usually he stands straight up.

It's a habit issue, not that he never could do it. In the last possession of the sole win against Heat, he stayed knee bent to move laterally well enough to force Wade turn away from driving to basket, to take a bad jumper 20 feet out. The commentator, I believe JVG was it, praised him for staying low in that play. His issue is that this is not his natural instinct as it's to KG, to ALWAYS keep his knee bent and weight center low.

I hope he gets his jumper back, big part of his game. I also think a full off-season and training camp going to help him and a lot of other Knick players.

i agree. Amare basically never "load up" his lower body to jump. But he's still 6'10 and there's no excuse for him to not average 10 rebounds when guys like zBo who can't even dunk at 6'9 average 10 a game. There are guys out there like Carl Landy, Dejuan Blair, Bass, etc that are all seriously undersized but average higher rebounding rates than Amare.
I think Amare has low bbiq. He gets caught out of position a ton. He never anticipates plays. He never reads the ball off the shooter's hands, he never out muscles opponents for rebounds. He is just slow, flatfooted and not a smart basketball player.

Amare will be "phenomenal" on defense next year. He will "assept the challenge". "The Knicks are back" he will say.
And none of this means **** because Amar'e is full of it.
