Sam Amick
The leading suspects for the alleged Dion Waiters promise - according to a team executive with good reason to find out - are Toronto (No. 8) and Phoenix (No. 13). The Syracuse shooting guard pulled out of yesterday's interviews and is believed to have left the Chicago predraft event.

B. Colangelo on Waiters stuff: "His agent has told me there's a promise to another team. Regardless, if he's on the board he's in our mix."

If he did enter into an agreement and actually cancelled all his draft workouts and interviews I would agree that it is a dumb move. There is the possibility (mentioned above) that circumstances change and the team that gave him the promise ends up drafting somebody else and then guess what happens? No one has seen your workouts, no one has seen your interviews, and all other teams know about you is someone promised to select you and for whatever reason they didn't which will raise additional questions. That could mean a serious slide for Waiters.

On the flip side though if there is a promise and that team ends up drafting him then he wins. I guess it depends on what team it is and what kind of agreement they have...is it possible to get something like that in writing this far from the draft?

I hope this isn't because of an Iguodala deal. Waiters would make a lot of sense playing SG for the 76ers if they move him, and Turner could slot in at SF.

Lol if I was a Hornets fan and they didn't take Davis I would go nuts. There is no way NOH passes on Davis.

I wonder if that makes it more likely that the promise was from Portland at 6, or a team picking after us.

I loathe the idea of trading for Igoudala.

We would take Philly's place on the bottom of the treadmill...he's as unimpactful as they get.

He is the best defender at the 3 beside LBJ.

What team would be stupid enough to make a promise?

I don't see him going top 5.

Portland is an option, maybe they think they can grab Waiters at 6 and then Lillard at 11 ? But at 6 is such a reach, it just doesn't make sense.

It's got to be Pheonix

Giving Waiters a promise is the stupidest thing a team with a top 8 pick can do. He's going to be there when they pick anyway. And if he's not, that means someone like Beal or Barnes dropped. Why the hell give him a promise? I understand if it's a team with a late lottery pick.

A promise doesn't necessarily mean a top team. Could be late in the lotto.

Would a promise to PHI at 15 be enough for Waiters? That is still a high pick, just out of the lotto.

Then PHI can take BPA at 8 and Waiters at 15. PHI look at a big man like Sullinger or a guy like PJ3 at 8.

This PHI-TOR scenario makes some sense. And if it is not TOR making the guarantee BC is not lying. And IGGY is exactly the sort of name BC would go after. Had a good playoff series, just like Hedo, and is somewhat of a name guy. I think that would be another mistake.

I didn't want Waiters really but was mildly intrigued by the idea that we made him a promise simply because it indicated we'd be keeping the pick.

Anyway, I'd rather Lillard or Lamb in that slot or someone ranked higher who drops down.

It doesn't indicate we're keeping the pick, it probably means Philadelphia is super high on him and does not want him drafted between 9-14. This seems like a classic pick and trade (ala Hibbert). Waiters doesn't scream BC pick to me.

Meh, I think sometimes we get too clever for our own good around draft time.

I agree that Waiters doesn't scream BC pick to me which is why I think he's probably been promised by someone else. I don't think BC would lie on the record about it, nor do I really believe he'd close off all his trade options three weeks before the draft to get locked in to one trade scenario with Philly.

You don't cancel your workouts for teams that are interested in you 6-11. Doesn't make sense.

Nobody knows what team made "the promise" (sounds like a LeBron 30 minute special, btw, but I digress...). So let's not freak out thinking some team is nuts because they made him a promise as a top4, or top 8. We do not know. He is obviously satisifed with whatever team has given it to him and we'll find out soon enough who that is.

The one thing I hope for is, if Waiters was given a promise, he's drafted before 8 and BC decides to keep the pick, or he has side deals waiting on wings in case we get another team's play (in case someone like Waiters jumps up the board). Now that would interest me alot.

Other than that, he may very well be going later in the round and likes the team and his position.
