miggs wrote:hey guys, do your friends ever go off on when you know something more about basketball than they do? I've probably said this before, but I feel being on this site (minus our amazing comm threads) makes me smarter about basketball in that, I get to hear from minds that are more polished than my own in this subject and feel that because of that exposure, it allows me to know a lot more and even intellectually weigh in on some decisions like Lin, which is today's example. Before Realgm, I was practically clueless to the CBA and the business side of the NBA, which this friend of mine still is.
A buddy of mine went off on me because I told him, Lin was worth matching regardless of how he actually plays on the court since he has actual talent/potential unlike Yi Jianlian or Wang Zhu Zhu (other asian players not named Yao). I cited links and actual facts, he didn't care for it and I got put on blast by all his buddies on fb that I thought Lin was worth CP3/D-Will (which I clearly stated I wasn't and it was only in Lin's third year that he gets paid $15m, but they were too ignorant to care for those details). Once I kept posting links and actual facts for every post I made, they started settling down. In the end, I lost a friend, mind you not one that I hang out with regularly anymore nor one I hold dearly but still, my refusal for giving him and his idiotic friends any inch of room in that debate resulted in him unfriending me on fb, I'm not mad but am wondering if I'm more of a dick now because of how much I'm on realgm hearing from better basketball minds than myself. Now again I ask, do any of you guys have this issue where you can't hear stupidity being thrown out without chiming in your two cents?
Also stephano made an awesome thread in the GB about under-achievers, that is truly a thread full of pain, I love that one sig a Raptors fan had of David Stern giving them the NBA title and the caption reads something like, "What did you think was gonna happen?" I swear Raptors fans have the best sigs
