Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
The most damning thing to me is how EG's individual moves never seem to build towards a larger, effective strategy. As Nate pointed out a day or two ago, he just doesn't have a plan. I *thought* Ted could fix that glaring hole in EG's skillset, but apparently that's not happening.

That was the #5 pick for Jamison and Stackhouse.

I didn't mean the #5 pick traded for Jamison. I don't count that as a bad trade. It did lead to four straight years of the playoffs. (We may have been better off with Deng for those four years instead of Jamison, but it's not a sure thing.)
I was referring to the #5 pick used to trade for Mike Miller. Technically, it was used for Rubio but I'm assuming we would have drafted Curry (who ultimately went #6).

Yeah, he has won a few.
Kwame for Caron Butler
Jamison for cap relief and the #30 pick (which he packaged with the #35 to get Booker).
Cap room for Seraphin and Hinrich
Hinrich for Crawford and the #17 pick (used for Singleton)
Arenas' $80M deadweight contract for Lewis' $50M deadweight contract
That's about it for "wins".
His losses are bigger:
#5 pick (Stephen Curry) for a 1-year rental of Mike Miller and Randy Foye
cap room and the #46 for Okariza's deadweight salary
What proved to be the 2011 #20 pick for Javaris Crittenton
There were lots of other stupid moves made, but those are the three big ones
Good point, i forgot about a lot of those trades during the big 3 era. I loved the Kwame for Caron and the Hinrich trades. But you're right, his losses are a lot bigger. He's really handicapped our rebuilding efforts.

Gotcha. I misread that.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
In the interest of making myself even more miserable about Grunfeld's total and utter ineptitude, I went back and looked at the drafts that he's run for the team to see how many players have produced more than their draft position, based on total Win Shares (ie, a player drafted 5th should for that draft class be at a minimum 5th in career WS to have been 'worth' the pick.) Unsurprisingly, EG is not so good at the draft.
His history:
2012: Bradley Beal (drafted 3rd, 16th in WS.)
2012: Tomas Satoransky (drafted 32nd, hasn't played in the league.) Notably, Jae Crowder drafted 34nd is 8th in WS.
2011: Jan Vesely (drafted 6th, 15th in WS.)
2011: Chris Singleton (drafted 18th, 12th in WS.) Notable for 2011, Kenneth Faried and Kawhi Leonard are 1/2 in WS, drafted 22/15 respectively.
2010: John Wall (drafted 1st, 9th in WS.)
2010: Trevor Booker (drafted 23rd, 8th in WS.)
2010: Kevin Seraphin (drafted 17th, 17th in WS.)
2009: No picks (#5 traded for Mike Miller, Randy Foye. #32 (Jermaine Taylor) sold to Houston.) Popular forum choices for the #32 pick DeJuan Blair (7th in WS) and Danny Green (20th in WS.)
2008: JaVale McGee (18th pick, 17th in WS.) Roy Hibbert who unfortunately was drafted 17th, is 10th in WS.
2008: Bill Walker (47th pick, 32nd in WS, traded to Boston.)
2007: Nick Young (16th pick, 22nd in WS.)
2007: Dominic McGuire(47th pick, 29th in WS.)
2006: Oleksiy Pecherov (18th pick, 33rd in WS.)
2006: Vladimir Veremeenko (48th pick, never played in the league.) IIRC Rajon Rondo (drafted 22nd, 2nd in WS) and Craig Smith (drafted 36th, 11th in WS) were popular "other" players.
2005: The Immortal Andray Blatche (drafted 49th, 27th in WS.) The 20th pick and Laron Profit were traded to Orlando for Brendan Haywood.
2004: The 5th pick (Devin Harris, 9th in WS) was traded with Laettner and Stackhouse to Dallas for Jamison and cash.
2004: PJ Ramos (drafted 32nd, 38th in WS)
-- The last two Wes drafts:
2003: Jarvis Hayes (drafted 10th, 30th in WS.)
2003: Steve Blake (drafted 38th, 17th in WS.)
2002: Jared Jeffries (drafted 11th, 18th in WS.)
2002: Juan Dixon (drafted 17th, 23rd in WS.)
2002: Juan Carlos Navarro (drafted 39th, 30th in WS.) Notably, Carlos Boozer (drafted 34th, 2nd in WS) and Tayshaun Prince (drafted 23rd, 4th in WS) were popular with the forum at the time (oy, why do I remember this stuff.)
So, what have we learned? Ernie's two best picks, arguably, have been Trevor Booker and Andray Blatche for both substantially exceeding their draft positions. Most damningly, Ernie seems totally inept at making high picks, choosing not one player in the upper half of the draft that has met or exceeded their draft position. Singleton has done fairly well, but at the expense of multiple other players that were heavily touted by forum members as substantially better.

So I'm assuming Don Newman will take over as headcoach?
I'm still trying to figure out why he'd leave the Spurs for this..

There is nothing in that piece suggesting that "Randy is close to being fired." Of course all of us fans expect that he could be fired soon, but the writer did not provide any suggestive rumors. Did I miss something?
I did see it may be time for someone else to push the buttons and pull the strings - was there something else?

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
Based on Ted's latest post, it still seems like he's in denial about Grunfeld:

"We have built our team around two key players who haven’t played at all or much for us yet this season. Nene has played parts of two games to date. In those minutes, we are a plus 40 points. When he is in our lineup our team has performed well last season and so far this season. I am grateful to him for working on his physical rehab so diligently and for being such a great teammate. We do think we are a much improved team when both John Wall and Nene play for us. We also think when our point guard returns, several players whose games revolve around running the floor will prosper. "

Well, it looks like Ernie no where near of being fired what a shame this is so depressing.

Re: Countdown to Ernie Grunfeld Firing
Ted is very delusional to think this team is going to all a sudden be very good with wall and Nene. We will be mediocre at best and a first round exit in the playoff. We have very low standards as in organization instead of getting young up coming talent we get over paid role players on the down side of there career. And are young players are nothing special out side of Wall and Beal who still has a chance to be very good.

Preserving for the inevitable deletion from his monitored blog.
Ted,
Most of us understand that the team was built around John and Nene. However, the fact that the supporting cast isn’t good enough to win one game on their own is indicative of how poorly the roster is constructed. That’s too much pressure on two players. If the team was so dependent on them, then why pay $20 MM to Ariza and Okafor? That’s a waste of resources. And in regards to Nene, he’s been injury prone throughout his career and was banged up when we made the deal. You know he’s going to miss 10-20 games a season so his absense is neither a surprise nor an excuse. Your refusal to identify the real problem (Ernie) is confusing. His record, his draft misses, the bad contracts, the W/L record….What else do you need to make the rational decision that he is not fit to be the GM any longer?
Spot on. I wonder what he'll post when they can't win with both on the floor?

What this shows is that:
A. Ted knows nothing about basketball
B. Ted is being managed masterfully by Ernie.
Someone who has Ted's ear, needs to break the spell that Ernie has cast upon him. The man is clueless.
