The verdict is that there is no verdict. Harden's getting adjusted to being the main man and it will probably take all season. Not to mention the fact that he isn't getting much help from his teammates, or that Kelvin Sampson is not exactly head coach material.

Re: What's the Verdict on James Hardin
He had found his perfect role in the NBA as 6th man, where he thrived. Some players are just born to be complimentary players. I think thats what he is best at. He;s not a #1 guy, may be a #2, but he was doing pretty good as #3 and that may be his best role in the NBA.
Atrocious FG% and turnovers so far. Aside from getting gifted 10 FTs a game for reasons unknown to anyone, what does he really contribute in this current role?
Its generally never a good idea to take a player in a lesser role on a winning team and put him in a bigger role on another team, thinking he will have the same success.

He is who we thought he was, a guy perfectly capable of being a tier 2 star. Not a guy you want leading your team without a superb supporting class, but the perfect guy to put next to a tier one guy. Shooting percentage looks bad but he's putting up a respectable ts% and getting to the line 9x per game.probably taking too many threes and still doesn't defend real well.
Edit: he's not gifted any free throws, he's just legitimately good at drawing contact

“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

^no, he doesn't draw contact. He's a soft penetrator and if you brush past him he gets the calls. Thats like 2006 Wade type treatment, which a player of his caliber should never be getting from the refs.

You can continue telling yourself that, but being hit on the arm is still contact. Just because he doesn't barrel into people doesn't mean he isn't drawing contact. He earns calls by being a heady guy who knows how to get hit.

This ^
His numbers are pretty good bar his efficiency which I expect to improve once he has at least one other competent scoring threat on his team. Seriously, look at the lineups he's rolling with. While they may be good defensively, offensively this team is full of liabilities.

Every player that drives into the paint gets touched at some point by bodies. Thats not a foul. He's not getting hit that often. Just because someone brushes against him thats not a foul. Thats good physical defense. Yet for superstars it generally is given as a foul, which is whats confusing because he's not a superstar, doesn't perform like a superstar, yet he gets superstar calls.

Re: What's the Verdict on James Hardin
He'd be better with a second star next to him. Harden gets more defensive attention than anyone in the league.
I'd hate to see Houston end up with Wiggins next year. Lin/Harden/Wiggins would be an absurd backcourt, and Wiggins would be a perfect compliment to Harden.

He will be all right. It's not only Harden who is struggling. Jeremy Lin was playing great at the beginning but later he has dramatically declined. He is not getting good passes. And they basically have one real offensive weapon which helps opposing teams defenses obv

There are 25 players in the league who have played at least 400 minutes while posting a usage rate above 25%. Of those 25, Harden ranks 12th in ORtg. He's got roughly the same usage and efficiency numbers as Tony Parker, Dwyane Wade, Brook Lopez, Russell Westbrook Kevin Garnett. He's a tier behind Durant, Duncan, Lebron, Kobe, Anthony and Jamal Crawford. He's comfortably ahead of Griffin, Aldridge, Pierce, Gay, Monroe, Ellis and Cousins (among others).

Re: What's the Verdict on James Hardin
Harden sometimes just jacks up shots, because that's what he think he needs to do. He just has to get used to playing this role. Another thing that annoys me is when he drives the ball, he doesn't try to make the shot, he tries to draw the foul and when he gets the call its cool. If he doesn't get the call, it's a wasted possession and his effeciency goes down.
If Lin can become a constant threat, or we can get a reliable post presence, it will take a little bit of pressure off of Harden where he doesn't feel the need to always go and iso.

Except for the part where his efficiency is way north of anything Ellis ever did as a number #1 option, and he couldn't be as abysmal defensively as Ellis if he tried.
