Re: 2013 Ask Jeff Risdon a Question
I don't like Alex Smith to the Chiefs. He's an upgrade, no doubt, but he's not the QB of the future. Considering the Chiefs were 2-14 think they have to look more longterm. Use the pick to upgrade the supporting cast and find a stopgap that they don't give up as much for.

That makes sense to me, but I think the Chiefs have more short-term potential than your average 2-14 team. Given how weak the AFC West is behind the Broncos, it's not inconcievable that KC could be a playoff team next year if they had a good QB like Smith to run the offense. Look at how much Indy improved under Luck (not saying that Smith is in the same category as Luck, but the Chiefs probably have a better non-QB squad than the Colts).
Get a stopgap like Smith to be your QB for 2-3 years while you groom a guy you really like to be the QB of the future. Heck, that's what the Niners were doing with him until Kaepernick sped up the timetable.

Re: 2013 Ask Jeff Risdon a Question
The Chiefs have impact talents at all three levels of the defense. They have a great RB. They have some decent young offensive linemen. They have lots of cap room, potentially. With even average QB play (say, Andy Dalton) last year the Chiefs were at least a 6-10 team. They have some major holes (DE, WR, QB, ILB) and zero depth but that's true of most teams right now.

Exactly, this is what I was trying to say but Jeff said it much more elegantly

Do you think there's any chance Geno falls to the Bills? And if the Bills don't draft QB #8, what position do you see them going after?

None. He is a top 4 pick. I hope you like Ryan Nassib.

Re: 2013 Ask Jeff Risdon a Question
At least Nassib would kinda sorta be at home. I always liked watching him at Syracuse.
Anywho, I finally got around to watching some of the Senior Bowl practices and the game that I recorded. During all of the broadcasts they were raving about the corners and safeties that were there, more specifically the "long corners."
Ic, who do you think had the best weekend and has the best upside from the secondary guys who were there? I know the kid from Georgia Southern (whose name eludes me) was a big hit.

Out of curiosity - Jeff - who is your pick for the 2013 winner of the 'Breakout Performance by an Athlete at the Indianapolis Combine''
I know that Goodwin is going to wow in the 40, and that Ezekiel Ansah is a freak athlete - but who of the lesser knowns is going to surprise with their 'workout warrior-ness'

I wrote a crapload about them at DetroitLionsDraft.com. There are three of them here:
http://www.detroitlionsdraft.com/2013/0 ... bowl-week/
Robert Alford and Jonathan Cyprien were the big winners. Showed not only that they could compete with the big boys but that they were better than a lot of them. Upside picks that could pay off big. Desmond Trufant is another guy who elevated his profile, ballhawking and being physical even though he's downright ugly in his backpedal. Function over form for Trufant, just like Quentin Jammer, who is probably his best comp I can think of.
The Georgia Southern player is JJ Wilcox and he is quite a physical specimen. Not as rocked up as Cyprien but real impressive. A little tight in the hips but he closes with incredible speed and thumping power. Drew a couple of comparisons to a shorter Kam Chancellor. I'm not that bullish; I watched one of their playoff games without really looking for him and he made little impression. I watched another game and they largely had him playing the Gamecock "Spur" position (at Ohio State it's a Rover), which is a safety-as-linebacker. He was very good against the run but didn't get the chance to do much in coverage. So I don't have a great feel for him in coverage.
I'm working on a Jordan Poyer scouting report this morning and I like him a lot. Lacks top end speed but he's going to be excellent for a team that plays a lot of zone and press-bail coverage (Minnesota, Atlanta, Baltimore)

I'm hoping they let Goodwin run a 100. I want to see someone run that in under 10 seconds. Watch his 40 splits for the second 20 yards, I guarantee they're the best we will see in Indy unless he falls down or tweaks something.
Ace Sanders is my pick to win the agility drills, him or Tavon Austin.
Jamie Collins will impress. So will Corny Washington. I mean this in a completely hetero way, but Washington has a fantastic body. We all wish we could be him, and the ladies all want us to look like him too. I think Kiko Alonso will impress mightily in drills too.
Montori Hughes has done 45 reps in workouts. He's a vociferous guy so he could be entertaining to watch work out. Manasi Foteki told me at the Shrine Game week he can do 33 reps before he even feels it, has topped 50 in practice workouts a couple of times.
Jonathan Hankins is going to put up sick speed and agility numbers for someone weighing at least 330 pounds. His short shuttle might beat a lot of tight ends and backers.
Tyrone Goard will time very well, but dude is skinny. Keon Clark legs for those that remember him. He has run 4.37 at 6'4" in workouts.
He's not going to wow in workouts but pay attention to Sam Houston CB Dax Swanson. He is a personal fave and will be one of my top "booms" in that annual piece. I bet Mayock really talks him up a lot.

Re: 2013 Ask Jeff Risdon a Question
I just read your post Super Bowl mock and saw you have the Giants taking Margus Hunt in the third round. I love how his nickname is "The Eastern Block" (I'm a big Soviet history buff) and saw him in drills and the Senior Bowl, but I can't help think he may just become a novelty with his 6'8 frame.
What's his real potential in the league besides a really good kick blocker?

Hard to find a real position for him. He's too high, really cannot get leverage. Not an explosive enough athlete to play OLB. Not as strong as I expected either. I think he's a situational sub as an edge rusher the first couple of years, will be very good special teamer. I was impressed by his willingness to learn and admit he needs work.

Of the WRs in this years draft, do you think Carolina takes one, and if so who and in what round?
Devilzsidewalk wrote:no, the DB's will just be thinking "damn, I thought that was going to be a run!" as they easily recover to intercept a Ponder pass 10 yards off the mark

I think it will be in the later rounds, which opens up all sorts of possibilities. Seems like they need an underneath/slot guy with creative quickness. Ace Sanders, Josh Boyce, Russell Shepard, Chad Bumphis, that kind of guy.

Assuming the Vikings draft a WR like they should. Who would be their best fit between Cordarrelle Patterson, Keenan Allen, Tavon Auston, and Terrance Williams?

Patterson will be gone before their first pick. Allen would be great, a guy that can get open at multiple levels and reliably catch the ball. Austin is kinda redundant with Harvin but not as big of a frame. Williams carries some similarities to Torrey Smith coming out, a limited vertical speedster with hand/eye coordination issues at times, but he can really stretch the field and makes enough plays to stay dangerous and impact the defense. Their first round pick is too high for him; he might be there for Minny in the 2nd.

you really think a qb is going that high this draft?
how many total in the first round would you say? i've gotten the feeling that most people seem to think this is a really down year for the qbs

I think there will be 4: Geno, Barkley, Wilson, and Nassib with Geno going top 4. The others are pretty variable. I suspect teams like the Jets, Cardinals, and Browns will trade back into the bottom of the 1st to get their men, maybe the Bills too if they opt against Nassib at 8, which I'm led to believe is the case.
It's not a great year for QBs but I have graded Smith, Nassib, and Wilson all higher than Locker/Ponder/Gabbert, and Barkley is not as bad as he's portrayed, probably the savviest QB in the draft. He just lacks athleticism and arm strength, not unlike Andy Dalton. I personally wouldn't take Barkley until the late 2nd but I prefer him to Glennon, who I gave a 6th round grade.
Where I think this draft is weak QB wise is in the developmental mid-late round guys. I'm not sure there should be any other QBs not listed here other than Dysert and Manuel that deserve to be drafted at all. Maybe Nate Stanley. Someone will draft Landry Jones to their error. I gave Matt Scott a late-round grade but IMO he'll never be more than a backup you don't want playing more than a quarter. None of the small school guys have shown much.
A function of that is that it will push up the value of the top of the class; can't afford to miss out and get caught hoping that Landry Jones or (gulp) Colby Cameron in the 7th are your long-term solution.
Sorry, long answer to a short question

My next question would then be do you think Allen will be there for them to take? And Is there another receiver I didn't name that would make sense for them to pick at their current draft spot?
