he is also fouling much less this year - goes back to defending smarter and moving feet. also much better defensive rebounder.

in 6 games since returning from injury
17.8ppg, 8.7rpg 46.2%fg, 39.3%three

i certainly dont expect him to keep those numbers up for the rest of the year, but i also think he is better than what he showed pre-injury. maybe for the rest of the way we can expect 15.0, 8.0 on about 43% with improved defense.

How much do you think this guy is worth this offseason ??? I'm nervous because i know bigs get PAID in this league..I hope we dont match a big contract. But this is Rich Cho's guy so he probably will.

I think anything under 5 a year is reasonable.

You guys are going to have to face the fact that Mullens is getting paid this summer and that we are going to match whatever he gets. This team was as bad as last year's team when Mully got hurt. On a bad day, Mullens is still our best big man and very arguably our second best player. He's a stretch big who is rapidly improving his game. I am convinced he'll get an Asik-like contract at the very least, and I'm more than willing to match that.

^was gonna mention Asik. He was the third or fourth big in Chicago, but Houston pulled him away with a 3 year/$25M offer sheet. I think we'd be lucky to keep Mully for that amount. Or maybe $30-32M if we stretch it across four years.

In Chicago, Asik averaged 13 rebounds per 36 minutes and proved that he could anchor a defense. I'm skeptical that any teams are craving for a big that shoots sub-40 percent, is a poor defender, and an average rebounder, even if he has potential. Seriously, go through every team and tell me which one is going to break the bank for Mullens.

And, for the record, the evidence doesn't suggest that Mullens makes us much better. 8-25 with him, 4-15 without... so, yes, in a nutshell we've been slightly better when he's been available to play. Good thing the refs helped us out against Toronto and we played the Wizards twice early. In addition, his on court/off court numbers are dreadful. All-Star Jeff Adrien has a lot to do with that, I guess.

Are Serge Ibaka, Paul Millsap, Josh Smith, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Marc Gasol also average rebounders? Just curious

Hoopdata suggests the average total rebound rate for power forwards playing 20 or more minutes in 20 or more games -- a list nearing 40 names -- is 14.1. Mullens is at 14.3.

didn't answer my question.

bballref has Mully's Rebound rate at 14.3

Serge Ibaka? 14.3
Paul Millsap? 14.2
Josh Smith? 14.0
LaMarcus Aldridge? 13.5
Marc Gasol? 13.5

Are those guys average rebounders too?

Yes, it's possible for great players to be average in one facet of the game...

Yeah, obviously. But as long as you're holding your own, it's OK to not be Kevin Love or Zach Randolph. Just don't be like Andrea Bargnani or Jeff Green...

And he's not Andrea Bargnani or Jeff Green so I don't know why anybody would make that point

Which is probably why nobody has made it. Green and Bargnani are well below average rebounders. Mullens isn't. He's average.

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/bobcats- ... -rebounder

"I just have to show the league and our organization that I can rebound," Mullens said.

"I've come a long way," Mullens said. "I had that first year under my belt playing last year. I've been in the league four years now but last year was like my first year so I just got my feet wet."

"Sometimes it's a little frustrating to watch Byron play because he maybe gives way to the 3-pointer too much," Dunlap said. "But we're walking him into the post more and saying, 'You'll get more touches but you have to love with your back to the basket more for us.'

"I think he's buying into that. The thing that is remarkable is he's getting his nose in there in traffic and taking (rebounds) off the top of the rim. Those are substantial rebounds and he's doing it over and over again."

"The 18 rebounds, I would rather have that than 25 points," he said. "That's because (rebounding) is not what I'm known for. I just have to show I can rebound consistently."

Well, the Magic only have one guy who is halfway decent rebounding (he's pretty damn good, but still it's only one guy), so I wouldn't be surprised to see Mullens parked under the boards for a good portion of the game, gobbling up rebounds. I say he gets 14 tomorrow.

Of course now I say that, he'll catch fire for 35 points and 2 rebounds or something.

Byron Mullens: Sam Presti's one glaring mistake.

i dont think dunlap is doing mullens any favors by allowing him to get starter minutes when he plays so poorly. at what point do you have to hold a player accountable and make them earn more minutes? he allows mullys to get away with stuff that no other coaches would put up with. is that player development or fostering bad habits? dunlap talks about how mully will earn minutes by rebounding, but mully hasnt tried to rebound in 5 games. and if he is hurting, dont play him.

Mully hasn't looked right ever since he came back from the ankle injury. Even that hot stretch of shooting he had, he was really slow and immobile looking. He could be phoning it in but I don't think he's quite right in the health department so I'm trying really hard to not bash him but he has definitely been playing like butt crack for a while.

mullens has grabbed 2 rebounds in his past 53 minutes of game time, including at least 33 straight minutes w/out a rebound.

he is so passive when he is dinged up. complete liability right now. dunlap needs to sit him until he is healthy.
